I added a line in the final paragraph:

It is not intended to focus on or support Ms. Moore; my intent is to address the legal and factual errors contained within the piece.

That works in nicely.

jhop, do you plan on rereading and looking for other things to tweak or are you finished with the letter?  My brain is tired, so I can't look anymore, but with the little corrections it looks great, looked great before but we found a couple items that you fixed.

as with anything that i write, i am going to sleep on it, reread it in the morning, and then send it.

but tonight i am going to send it to shannyn and ask her if there is anything she would like me to take out, as a courtesy and out of respect for her.

With all due respect, I am writing in response to an op-ed that your paper recently published

jhop, I'm still thinking, about this sentence, it's not her paper, she is a AK guest blog from ADN "AK Voices: Guest Opinion bloggers"  maybe you can tweak it a bit, we don't want her thinking she owns the paper.  =)

i am going to send the letter to the editors and CC grimes. they are responsible for the final content that they publish in their newspaper.

thank you so much for all of your help.  i really appreciate it so much.

i added a line in the first paragraph to address any concerns about grimes's role at the paper.

"however, this op-ed, written by guest-opinion writer Joann Grimes, is factually incorrect and defamatory, and to be frank, I was surprised that it was published."

Awesome, impressive letter- well done, jhop.

One thing- and this is from a retired English teacher- shouldn't Blacks Law Dictionary be in italics, or underlined?  Unless legal references are different ie titles...

jHop--just got here after a long day at work.  You most definitely rock.  I haven't had time to read everything that everyone has said but in your footnotes where you quote something she wrote (#6), you are missing a 'c' from the first 'inclined'.

Not to be picky or anything.

jhop, I didn't glean from the article that Shannyn was a homosexual, but Joann purported her to be a prostitute.  Maybe I'm wrong here, but I want to make sure all the eyes are dotted and the tees are crossed.  =)

I dont know. Can someone else tell me or give me an opinion or just affirm zyggy? I assumed it was homosexual, based on other comments I have read on mudflats. But I dont know what "down by the docks" or however she wrote it means, in terms of Alaskan innuendo.

I would like to be right. Either way, its defamation per se - it still involves her sexuality. But can someone tell me what she is implying in the editorial?

Shannyn's got a boyfriend (picked this up from Gryphen at The Immoral Minority).  I'd assume, from knowing Alaska and reading Ms. Grimes's "op-ed", that she was implying that Shannyn's a prostitute.

Waiting for sailors down by the docks is what I took it to mean.  As in "Hey Sailor Boy!" a classic call-girl pickup line in old movies.

Good catch. Ripley also mentioned this and I didn't see it until just now.

Legal citations are different; they are based on The Blue Book (the most frustrating manual in all the land). In reality, for an end citation, it should not be underlined or italicized - it should be in small caps. That, however, is not an option on our beloved mudflats forum. But in the text itself, you are absolutely right - it should be in italics. thanks so much!
