YaYz!!!!!  I love the Olympics!  Only 3 weeks to go!  Here's the official website: http://www.vancouver2010.com/

I'll be rooting for Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo in pairs figure skating.  I'm thrilled they came out of retirement to compete a third time at the Olympics.

I was able to catch a little of the US Mens Figure Skate Championship last weekend, and I must say that Jeremy Abbot's Free Skate program was perfect. It felt like magic was happening watching him skate a flawless program.

I love the Olympics. Thanks god for tivo, so I can watch the sports I want at my convenience.  I toyed with heading to Vancouver, but the ticket prices appalled me.  I'm not that into crowds, either. The fantasy of attending the Olympics pales to the comfort of watching it on a big screen at home.

From Flora Thompson's "Lark Rise to Candleford" "A little later, remembering man's earthly origin, "dust thou art and to dust thou shalt return," they liked to fancy themselves bubbles of earth. When alone in the fields, with no one to see them, they would hop, skip, and jump, touching the ground as lightly as possible... and crying, "We are bubbles of earth! Bubbles of earth! Bubbles of Earth!" "

We've got a good line up for figure skating in 2010 - some solid contenders for medals.  I think the Chinese may clean sweep the pairs, and the US isn't likely to medal in ladies figure skating.  But the men and the ice dancers have a good shot at medals.

Pairs:            Caydee Denney/Jeremy Barrett,  Amanda Evora/Mark Ladwig
Ice Dancing:  Meryl Davis/Charlie White, Tanith Belbin/Ben Agosto, Emily Samuelson/Evan Bates
Men:            Jeremy Abbott, Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir
Women:       Rachael Flatt, Mirai Nagasu

And here's our first figure skating controversy for 2010!  Russian world champion ice dancers Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin are accused of being offensive to indigenous Australians in their use of symbols, music and movements in their original dance, which is expected to be repeated in Vancouver.  You can see the program here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vczTPSwF9do

Quote
'Aboriginal people for very good reason are sensitive about their cultural objects and icons being co-opted by non-Aboriginal people - whether they are from Australia or Russia," said Bev Manton, chair of the NSW Land Council.

I watched the US ice dancing competition Saturday morning, and I think the Russian routine looks like crap compared to the top US skaters' programs.  Let alone any other issues with it.
