My grandparents went to Alaska for the gold rush. My mother was born in Nome. Her siblings were born in Cleary Creek, Goldstream and Ruby. I was born in Anchorage. We lived there until my father retired and moved us to Oregon. I have Wasilla ties that go back to 1947. I still have family there.  My parents are gone now but none of us ever completely left Alaska. It came to Oregon with us. I have been back on a number of occasions. The most recent was immediately after the Exxon Valdez oil spill. We met people from all over the country who came to Alaska to help clean up that spill. I was amazed at all those good folks coming to help. Some took vacation time to do it.

My Wasilla connections made me aware of Sarah Palin before her nomination by the McCain campaign. I found her nomination so appalling that I went on line to see what everyone else was saying about her. That brought me to Mudflats in September last year. It has been a great ride. I love this blog. It is an integral part of my day now. I have been and will continue to be a lurker as I do not have the energy to do otherwise. All I have to say is "keep up the good work".

My first political involvement was opposing the Vietnam war when I was in college. That was in 1964. I have been politically active on some level ever since. My last job was running an in-house print shop for a building full of lobbyists. That job also brought me paid positions on political campaigns. I am passionate about human rights, education, peace and other progressive issues. I am now retired on disability. My interests include oil painting, weaving, knitting, beadweaving, reading and politics. Not necessarily  in that order.

Hi Loreen.  Actually we met at the Oregon Mudflat Meetup on December 5. I haven't done an introduction, so I guess that's why my name isn't on the Oregon lists.

Oh, I haven't started reading the book you recommended ("the Wrecking Crew" by Thomas Frank). While I was waiting for it to come, I started reading his earlier book "What's the Matter with Kansas?" I'm about three quarters of the way through it, so won't be long before I'll be ready to get together to discuss the Wrecking Crew. We need another meetup.   Cheers!

Welcome Loreen.  Happy to have you here.

goosedodger, can I persuade you to *formally* introduce yourself so we can add you to the States list?  Smiley

Loreen and Goosedodger:

Glad to see that you're both delurking a bit Wink

I got "The Wrecking Crew" for Xmas, also, too!  But haven't yet started it because I wanted to finish "Going Rouge" first (which I finally did).  However, there are several other new book gift arrivals that are tempting me, including "The Family" by Jeff Sharlet and "Three Cups of Tea" (about building schools in Afghanistan)  So many books ... so little time ...

What about another meetup on January 9 in Salem?-- We have a Dem meeting there at 11 (at Marion County Democrats office).  Could we do Padington's again?

Delurking can be so much fun!  So many friends to make with similiar political interests, which is so nice for some of us in red states and families.   Welcome

Actually, this is my first forum too -- and I don't know where or how to "formally" introduce myself.  Huh?

I did have a great time at the New Year's Eve party in the Chat Room  Cheers! And see all the fancy smileys in my message? I'm learning. Smiley
