Each year, the Ed Block Courage Awards honors those National Football League players who exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. Recipients are selected by their teammates for team effort, as well as individual performance.
The Ed Block Courage Award recipient symbolizes professionalism, great strength and dedication.  He is also a community role model.  With this honor, he enters into an association which contrasts his fierce profession by becoming a major component of the Courage House National Support Network for Kids. He becomes an Ambassador of Courage for victims of abuse, violence and neglect.
The Ed Block Courage Award recipient will be identified as a team player in helping abused children and families in crisis.
The Courage Award has become one of the most esteemed honors bestowed upon a player in the NFL, especially since the recipient is selected by his peers.

I will be writting to the NY (NJ Jets and Giants) winners and asking that they boycott the ceremony.

Dear Mr Lamantia and  Mr Copenhaver:

   I find it outrageously appalling that the street thugs known as the Philadelphia Eagles have nominated Michael Vicks for your outstanding award.
Vick had admitted to conduct that was "not only illegal, but also cruel and reprehensible”.  Upon information and belief he was a principle in the dog fighting ring over a FIVE year period.
He spent less than 23 months in prison being released in July of 2009.  NOW LESS THAN 5 months later he is being honored with your award for COURAGE. It does not take a courageous person to beat and kill animals; to train and force them to fight, maim and kill each other. These are the acts of a depraved individual.  I realize that Felons can be rehabilitated but I do not believe MR. Vicks is worthy of your award.

   I would request that you seriously consider denying him the privilege or receiving your distinguished award.  Giving this honor to such a vile individual would only tarnish the other recipients of the award and the standing of your award.

I recognize that much of the money the Ed Block Foundation receives comes from the NFL. I appreciate the fact that it would take courage, the kind Ed Block demonstrated and the kind that the Ed Block Courage Awards are supposed to honor, to reject the Eagles' nomination of Michael Vick. I would hope though that an organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse would demonstrate just that sort of courage. S. Covahey, Baltimore
