Five years ago, Ukraine's Orange Revolution was hailed as a new start for a country that had begun to look west towards the European Union and Nato. But as voters prepare to go to the polls next Sunday in the first presidential election since they cast out the country's Soviet-era leadership, Europe's most famous colour-coded reform movement seems to have run out of steam.

Both of the front-running candidates in the poll have indicated that firmer ties with Russia, whether for pragmatic or ideological reasons, will be a priority. The poll will thus ring the death knell for a pro-western revolution that degenerated into a morass of political infighting, compounded by economic crisis.

Tension is rising between candidates in Sunday's presidential election in Ukraine, with Yulia Tymoshenko accusing her main rival of preparing huge fraud.  Mrs Tymoshenko, the prime minister, said a "deliberate disruption of the election process" was taking place on behalf of rival Viktor Yanukovych.

Ukraine's prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, last night appeared to have forced a runoff in the race to become the country's new president, closing the gap on her chief rival, Viktor Yanukovich, enough to ensure that the pair will have to face each other again in a deciding vote next month.

Exit polls showed Yanukovich winning the most votes in yesterday's presidential election, but analysts expect Tymoshenko to pick up a higher proportion of second round votes from defeated candidates. They say Yanukovich may struggle to extend his appeal beyond his support base in Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine's pro-Moscow opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych appears to be heading for a narrow victory in the country's presidential election.  But with more than 85% of the votes counted, PM Yulia Tymoshenko has closed the gap to 2.5% on her rival.  Mr Yanukovych called on Mrs Tymoshenko to quit, but she refused and is expected to challenge the result.

Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc has said it will contest in court the conduct of the Ukrainian presidential election she appears to have narrowly lost.  Deputy leader Elena Shustik said the bloc would contest results at some polling stations and ask for a recount, Russia's Interfax news agency reports.  Another bloc official accused Viktor Yanukovych's party of "falsification", Reuters news agency says.

The defeated candidate in Ukraine's recent presidential election run-off, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, has vowed to challenge the result in court.  In her first comments since Viktor Yanukovych was declared the winner, Ms Tymoshenko alleged widespread fraud and said he was not legitimately elected.

A Ukrainian court has suspended the result of the recent presidential election, following a challenge by losing candidate Yulia Tymoshenko.  Mrs Tymoshenko, the Prime Minister, went to the supreme administrative court in person on Tuesday claiming the result was rigged.
