We absolutely Do care Judi!   It is wonderful what you have done and could inspire others to do the same! That is a great return from a bake sale.  Ideas, my dear, they are priceless.

I'm very happy to hear that the family of the young lady in college is safe.  Every bit of good news is a moral booster.

I agree...Judi  You Rock!

Help comes in many forms.  Shocked

Quote
Relief has arrived in Haiti this week in the form of planes of Scientologists who will help Haitians heal spiritually and Evangelical Christians bringing solar-powered bibles.

Scientologists in yellow jackets fanned out over the island to introduce Haitians to their faith as “volunteer ministers” who claim that (with the power of touch) they can reconnect nervous systems. [Emphasis added]

I hope the religious nuts also brought food and water for their flock.  Even the Salvation Army serves a meal with their sermon.

The number of dead continues to rise.  Aftershocks continue.  People are streaming out of the city in search of safety in the countryside.
Quote
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - The truckers filling Haiti's mass graves with bodies reported ever higher numbers: More than 150,000 quake victims have been buried by the government, an official said Sunday.

That doesn't count those still under the debris, carried off by relatives or killed in the outlying quake zone.

... The Haitian government was urging many of the estimated 600,000 homeless huddled in open areas of Port-au-Prince, a city of 2 million, to look for better shelter with relatives or others in the countryside. Some 200,000 were believed already to have done so, most taking advantage of free government transportation, and others formed a steady stream out of the city on Sunday.

Seven-year-old raises £65,000 for Haiti quake victims

Quote
Charlie Simpson, from Fulham, cycled five miles (8km) around South Park near his home to raise funds for Unicef's earthquake appeal.

The fundraising total outstripped his initial £500 goal, after he put an appeal on the JustGiving website.

Unicef thanked him "on behalf of the many children in Haiti".

On his JustGiving page, Charlie said: "I want to do a sponsored bike ride for Haiti because there was a big earthquake and loads of people have lost their lives.

"I want to make some money to buy food, water and tents for everyone in Haiti."

Well done, Charlie.  Two Thumbs Up!

This is just so wrong - Cruise controversy in Haiti

Quote
Cruise ships are bringing tourists to a private Haitian beach resort, which is less than 200km from the quake-hit capital Port-au-Prince.

The scene of comfort and joy, on an island where thousands of people have died or are in dire need of food, water and medical, has provoked much controversy and concern.

From what I understand, some of the passengers on the ship felt the same way, and chose to stay on the ship while docked off of Haiti, rather than use the beaches.

If the cruise ship c/wouldn't share their 'comfort and joy' in this emergency, they should have kept sailing. I don't begrudge the passengers their vacation, but the cruise company should have used better judgement.

I read somewhere last week that the ships were bringing in relief supplies and that if they canceled those stops, they would just hurt the economy of the people who count on the income of those tourists. I guess there's an upside and a downside to this.

I thought about that too, exPat - the ports these ships dock in do make money off the tourists, and to deny that to Haiti would add injury to injury (the insult part I'm not so sure about).  Still, it would seem like the cruise line could somehow strike a balance that wouldn't be so glaringly offensive - dock in port, maybe take up some donations from the cruise ship guests (not all, but many, have pretty fat wallets), maybe not play up the fun-in-the-sun ventures quite so exuberantly.   It's a difficult situation, but there should be some way to balance it out.

I heard an interview on NPR with someone from the cruise ship company. They are dedicating all the proceeds from one of the recreational activities to relief efforts. I am afraid I don't remember all the details, but I do know that it would have a negative impact economically if they did not come. I believe the spokesperson was also expressing concern about another community that was just as hard hit as Port au Prince but has not had the publicity or forthcoming aid. It seemed they were hoping to do something to assist relief efforts there.
