Very good point Sister, one should say the "misuse" of religion, as few religions inherently promote the bad things done in their name. But in the US today, it is getting hard to see the difference.

I guess my theory on Most deaths is that they can be directly attributed to mans greed and desire for power over his fellow man.  That would include the use of religion as a power tool whether it be by governments or by those within a religion itself.  The crusades and the Spanish inquisition were both about power and greed and the use of religion to consolidate the desired power base.

During the First Crusade, in response to the Byzantines request for help, as pointed out by Lisa, the pope used the rallying cry of calling to repel the Muslims from the Holy Land.  Their battle cry was "God Wills It".

For reference on the crusades:

It is mans personal failings that has led to the most deaths of other humans. Just my opinion of course, but Lennon was on a good course with saying we should celebrate life itself and nature.

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.  Jack Layton
