Thanks to austintx for posting this on the blog!  Worth reading in full. A Lesson in White Privilege: What if Sarah Palin Were Black? http://open.salon.com/blog/chauncey_devega/2010/02/09/a_lesson_in_white_privilege_what_if_sarah_palin_were_black

Quote
If Sarah Palin were black, her daughter's out of wedlock, "baby daddy drama" would have been presented as an example of both pathological behavior and a dysfunctional family that is symbolic of the social problems in that community. If Sarah Palin were black, never would the poor decision making by the Palin family be marked off as challenges overcome, or deeds to be valorized.

If Sarah Palin were black, her neo-secessionist husband would have been the death knell for her political career, because as we all know you can't trust "those people."

If Sarah Palin were black, her lack of intellectual curiosity, willful and cultivated ignorance, and lack of grace both written and spoken, would not be taken as "folksy." Instead, Palin would be viewed as unqualified for any public office.

If Sarah Palin were black she would be tarred and feathered as an "affirmative action baby."

If Sarah were black, she'd be implicated in *both* the Todd-half-sister drug burglaries, and Sherri Johnston's arrest for dealing.
If Sarah were black, we'd be hearing a lot more about the party where one of her daughters was drinking and/or smoking "the doobies" that was in a recent Enquirer issue.
If Sarah were black, she'd be that Detroit official that got busted for embezzling city funds.
If Sarah were black, we'd be hearing "welfare queen" thrown around.
If Sarah were black, there'd be no Klan-in-all-but-name 'bagger party rallying around her.

If Sarah Palin was black, Toncredo's literacy test would apply to her.

True dat.

Also,

If Sarah Palin were fat . . . . I mean, come on, there's question that the tolerance for her shtick is so high because of her looks.

If Sarah Palin were a man . . . . She would never have come this far.  She's gotten a pass on so much because she's a girl (I refuse to use "woman.")  No one wants to be seen as "picking on her."

We would never have heard of her.

Yep.  There was a black Sarah Palin that used to run for city council in La Marque, Texas back in the nineties.  All the "white men" thought she was a joke.  I'm sure their tolerance would have been elevated had she been a babe.

Interestingly, she actually did get elected recently.  I wonder if she learned what Sarah has not:  knowledge is important.
