Lane County GOP drops a big chunk to draw Sarah Palin by  Carla Axtman

 <snip>

Yesterday, the Lane County GOP announced that they're bringing quitter-Alaska-Governor Sarah Palin to Eugene in April for their annual Lincoln Day fundraiser:

Bill Young, the party’s Lane County chairman, confirmed Tuesday that the former vice-presidential candidate/former Alaska governor/current best-selling author will be the keynote speaker at the party’s annual Lincoln Day fundraiser at the Hilton Eugene on April 23.

The fundraiser is typically held in February near Lincoln’s birthday, “but we made a special dispensation for her schedule,” Young said. “For some reason, we figured her schedule was more important than that date.”

Young said local Republican Party leaders have been working with Palin’s handlers for nearly a year in an effort to bring her here. He would not say how much Palin’s visit will cost — in fact, the contract with her speakers’ bureau prohibits disclosing the amount.

Might have to import a couple of R's from Springfield  -- not many to  be found in the Peoples Republic of Eugene.

As reported in today's Oregonian and the Eugene Register Guard, Lane County Republicans are raking in the do-re-mi from Sarah's upcoming appearance.  However, if their gross is $188K and Sarah's speaking fee is $100K, that leaves $88K or less than half of the "take" for the locals -- why is this such a good deal for the Lane county GOP?

Guess who's coming to dinner in Eugene?

None other than former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Palin, former governor of Alaska, is schedule to give a speech to area Republicans on April 23 and the event is already sold out.  Here's some of what reporter David Steves of the Eugene Register Guard reported today:

    According to campaign finance disclosures, Lane County Republicans are on track to gross at least $188,000 on the event — a portion of which will pay for Palin’s speaking fees, hotel bills, food and other expenses, said Whaanga Kewene, coordinator for the event, which is called the Lincoln Day Dinner.

    “It is exceeding our expectations,” he said, noting that local Republicans began working to bring Palin to Eugene last fall. Since then, she has published a memoir, made several high-profile tea party movement appearances, and last week launched a show on Fox News.

    “Her popularity has excelled since we started this planning process. That makes a big difference,” Kewene said.

It's going to be difficult to get a boots on the ground report on this given the restrictions laid out in Palin's contract:

Tickets are available only in advance. And the Lane County Republicans are trying to make it difficult to catch a free viewing of Palin on YouTube: A Lane County Republican advertisement includes this “Important Note”: cell phones, cameras and recording devices are not permitted at the Palin speech.

Kewene said that restriction was required by Palin’s booking agency.
