Rachel Maddow Talks to Vic Fischer & Shannyn Moore

Well, it was a pretty exciting night in Anchorage! Rachel Maddow came and filmed her Tuesday night show right here in our humble city. Before I go pour myself into bed, I thought I’d put up one of my favorite segments of the show. This is Rachel interviewing Vic Fischer, one of the original delegates to Alaska’s constitutional convention. Yes, he’s one of our founding fathers so when certain candidates go throwing around comments about constitutions, he’s the guy to set them straight.

And of course, Shannyn Moore livened up the discussion with her take on the election.

It was pretty wonderful to be there in the front row (yes, that’s me & Spouse) to see three of my favorite people all on screen at the same time. And there were many Mudflatters in the audience as well. We maxed out the Taproot with about three hundred people. Hopefully, the next time Rachel and her awesome crew come back to Alaska, we can keep them longer. But, they’re about to experience some major temperature and culture shock, and jetted off right after the show to their next stop – Las Vegas.

I’ll post more about the evening tomorrow after I’ve recovered!

  1. Loved the show and the joy in each and everyone there. Keep on calling, talking and voting. Scott will make it even though the judicial rulings up there seem pretty slanted to the GOP.

  2. Gimme-a-break, Sarah says:

Rachel was awesome! She is a terrific interviewer!

  3. dreamgirl says:

Us Mudpups need to thank Racheal Maddow Show @ MSNBC. Just because she and her team are amazing is just one reason to send thank you letters. (God I’m turning into my Grandma!)( Sorry folks)

  4. Alana says:

Rachel thinks circles around all these politicians.

  5. MonaLisa (inCT) says:

I’ve never seen Rachel look so… radiant! as she did in front of you all in the Taproot! What an awesome night!

  6. dreamgirl says:

Shout out to Mr. Vic Fischer, how wonderful for you to be here when Alaska needs to hear your voice at this time. Mr. Fischer, thank you for your public service, for yesterday-today-and tomorrow!

Special Thank You for Mr. Vic Fischer!!!! You Rock!

  7. dreamgirl says:

I was remembering SesameStreet when I saw Maddow’s comparison of Alaska’s contenders:

“One of these things doesn’t belong here,

one of these things just doesn’t belong..”, and then they would show (eg) 4 boxes– 3 boxes with shapes like rectangle, square, triangle … then a tree.

McAdams is the tree, the one who doesn’t play the Republican/Corporate-gain game.

Go Scott McAdams and Godbless ALL his supporters and phone-bankers!

    McAdams for the McWIN!

  8. overthemoon says:

This gal in Kansas watched, feeling like I was seeing all my mudflats pals! Very exciting. What a great coup for all of you who work so hard for your state. I’m thinking there’s gonna be a big surprise come election nite. McAdams will rock in the Senate!!

  9. jojobo1 says:

Meant to say was a great show Rachel was wonderful and did not let answers go unanswered.

  10. Califpat says:

Blooper: My husband and I were cracking up when they had no answers and looked like deer in the headlights!!!

    • jojobo1 says:

Especially when he said he did not know enough about president Obama to say anything.Goes to show at least he never looked at any other candidate or fact checked anything. It seems like miller supporters are voting for him for one reason only, they don’t seem to care how good or bad the man is just that he is anti choice.

  11. Blooper says:

I liked the part where Rachel went up to one of the baggers and challenged him to name one thing Eric Holder has done to thwart gun ownership. The perplexed look and all the ‘uhhs’ and ‘umms’ on his face was priceless.

    • prisonernumbersix says:

The look on his face was priceless, but the situation was sad. Whipped up into a frenzy and doesn’t know (or, possibly, care) what the real facts or issues might be!

  12. far from fenway fan says:

Rachel Maddow is a treasure! With more intelligence in her pinky than the whole right wing of the Republican party, Rachel’s interview w Lisa was a gem. It was obvious that Lisa sensed that Rachel knew her stuff; interesting to see Lisa admit to taking credit for stimulus $ she voted against. That’s the kind of no nonsense journalism we need in this state and country. Not sound bites and fluff.

    • Millie says:

Rachel was outstanding w/Lisa….put her in a corner and made her fess up!

      • dreamgirl says:

“Pilot program for Social Security”, what a joke. That’s the beginning to the END of Social Security. Lisa (lease-a) Murky wants all elder people to eventually have no Social Security beneifits and NO medicaid! Loser.

  13. carl Nostrand says:

    Great night in Anchorage!!

I know something about Scott M. My soccer coach in hi school use to call it “intestinal fortitude”. Baiting Hooks for a living in the bearing sea for a living is not for the week of mind or body! We find limits in this endurance fishery. There is no room on any boat for slackers and posers. You simply get run off by the crew or you get off!

Tank Jones talked about Scott M being passive and not aggressive enough to be in office. Well, Tank Jones will b schooled by this home boy with Bearing Sea Blood and Guts in his body. I think Scott will have the political power to lead in DC. Scott knows Alaska like very few people do. The joke on the conventional long liners that I fished many years on was that we were ” LOW Level Supper HERO’S” , sometimes staying up 60 hours in a row, working to the human limits and beyond.

I know who is my “Supper Hero” this Nov 2th! Some one that has learned how to pace them self for super Human work. GO Scott!!!!!

    • Alaska Pi says:

You are right about Mr McAdams and it shows in his endurance and working tirelessly and good-naturedly-
      against all odds.
      Go Scott!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Lacy Lady says:

Watched the show. Rachael did a great job!!!!!

Rand Paul volunteer seeks apology from liberal activist he stomped

By Matt DeLong and Rachel Weiner

This post was last updated Wednesday at 1:50 p.m.
The Rand Paul campaign volunteer who stepped on the head of a liberal activist after she had been wrestled to the ground outside a debate said Wednesday that the incident has been blown out of proportion and that the activist owes him an apology.

(Comment from Dagian: WHAT THE H*LL?! ARE YOU MAD?)

“She’s a professional at what she does,” Tim Profitt, who was fired Tuesday from Paul’s Senate campaign, said in an interview with local television station WKYT. “When all the facts come out people will see that she’s the one who initiated the whole thing.”

Profitt acknowledged that “I put my foot on her and I did push her down” as she attempted to confront Paul outside a debate Monday night but said, “I would like for her to apologize to me to be honest with you.” He said he believed the activist, 23-year-old Lauren Valle, posed a danger to Paul, a Kentucky Republican and darling of the tea party movement.

(Well, that should make it extra-easy for the judge, now shouldn’t it? Pushing her down with your foot–whatta classy guy.)

With the incident threatening to influence the dynamics of the hotly contested race, the Paul campaign removed Profitt as Bourbon County campaign coordinator and barred him from its events. “The Paul campaign has disassociated itself with the individual who took part in this incident,” campaign manager Jesse Benton said Tuesday.

Profitt and at least one other man roughly handled Valle, a MoveOn.org activist, as she attempted to present Paul with an “employee of the month” award from the bogus group RepubliCorp, video of the incident shows.

In a statement Wednesday, MoveOn official Ilyse Hogue said she was “offended and outraged” by Profitt’s comments. “Profitt said the attack was ‘not a big deal,’ that Lauren ‘instigated it’ and that ‘she should apologize’ — words that are eerily familiar to many women who have faced assault and abuse,” she wrote, adding that “Candidates on both sides of the aisle, including Rand Paul, must condemn Profitt’s outrageous statements and call out this violence for what it is: anti-women and anti-American.”

In an interview Tuesday, Profitt said the scuffle was not as bad as it looked and blamed police for not intervening. “I’m sorry that it came to that, and I apologize if it appeared overly forceful, but I was concerned about Rand’s safety,” he said, according to an Associated Press report .

Valle, a District resident, said her face was swollen and her neck and shoulder were sore. In an interview with Post opinion blogger Greg Sargent, she said she believed the attack was premeditated.

“They identified me as a MoveOn worker, and as someone they knew from prior campaign events,” she said. “And so, about five minutes before Rand Paul showed up, they motioned to each other to start taking photographs of me.” She added that they formed a “blockade” behind her.

“I think that this is an extreme example of the kinds of sentiments that people are feeling in many races across the country,” Valle said. “I think that tension is incredibly high.”

The race, one of the most closely watched in the country, pits Democrat Jack Conway against Paul. The video of Profitt carrying a Paul sign and putting his left foot on Valle’s shoulder and then pressing down on the side of her head circulated widely Tuesday.

Profitt is being ordered to appear in court so a judge can decide whether charges are warranted, the AP reports. Sargent reports that police are treating the case as a misdemeanor assault.

  17. Dagian says:

Good news! Of course, it would be better if there were more reporters discussing the fact that your candidate, McAdams, addresses the issues, answers questions and doesn’t resort to hired goons.

Alaska judge blocks distribution of write-in names

    By DAN JOLING
    The Associated Press
    Wednesday, October 27, 2010; 2:27 PM

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An Alaska judge on Wednesday granted a temporary restraining order stopping state elections officials from handing out names of write-in candidates at polling places.

The ruling is a setback for the campaign of incumbent U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who was defeated in the August GOP primary by tea party favorite Joe Miller and is mounting a write-in campaign. Former Sitka Mayor Scott McAdams is the Democrat in the race.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Frank A. Pfiffner said the division was in clear violation of an administrative regulation.

The regulation reads, “Information regarding a write-in candidate may not be discussed, exhibited, or provided at the polling place, or within 200 feet of any entrance to the polling place.”

Pfiffner said in his 13-page ruling that the Elections Division surreptitiously sought approval from the U.S. Department of Justice under the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to provide polling places with a list of write-in candidates, including the name of the candidate and candidate’s party.

The Justice Department did not approve the plan, but the Elections Division implemented it anyway. A spokesman for the Alaska Department of Law did not immediately respond to messages Wednesday.

In the ruling, Pfiffner enjoined the Elections Division from allowing election workers and polling place workers to post write-in candidates, to provide a list of write-in candidate names to voters or to verbally provide those names to voters.

“The judge has clearly ruled that the law should be upheld, and Alaska voters deserve a fair and legal election,” Patti Higgins, chairwoman of the Alaska Democratic Party, said in a statement. “The court’s ruling ensures that the Division of Elections and the State of Alaska cannot give special treatment to any write-in candidate.”

The Alaska Democratic Party sued Monday to stop the Elections Division from providing the information and the Republican Party of Alaska joined the lawsuit. They claimed the names would skew voting in favor of write-in candidates.

The Murkowski campaign had intervened in the lawsuit, arguing that election officials have a broad mandate to assist voters and the desire of voters in past court cases has trumped state rules.

At a hearing Monday, assistant attorney general Margaret Paton-Walsh said the Elections Division anticipated questions and the potential for an increase in assistance requests because of the high-profile write-in campaign.

Paton-Walsh said lists of write-in names were only intended as voter assistance and were not forms of advocacy. She said other states routinely post such information at polling places.

Kenneth Kirk, an attorney for the Alaska Republican Party, said in a statement that giving out lists of write-in candidates at the polls was a clear violation of Alaska law.

“It is our hope that the Division of Elections will accept this well-reasoned ruling and move on to more important things, rather than dragging this issue out with more litigation,” Kirk said.

    • CO almost native says:

      Good.

“Paton-Walsh said lists of write-in names were only intended as voter assistance and were not forms of advocacy. She said other states routinely post such information at polling places.” My asshat! How to write in the name of a person, yes– “helpful” lists with particular candidates, no. If a voter wants assistance, he/she can print out a sample ballot and practice.

  18. Moose Pucky says:

Kudos to Vic Fisher. I’m glad you are getting the exposure you deserve. I’m truly impressed with what you have done in your life and what you are doing at this time in this election. Your commentary in ADN, also, for Scott McAdams is appreciated by many, many Alaskans.

  19. DuckDriver says:

Watching the video I learned (to my utter horror) that Frank Murkowski now lives in Utah??!!!?!?!?

Please, please, PLEASE say it ain’t so.

    DD

    • Blooper says:

Yup, it’s so. He fled Alaska with his tail between his legs right after he was demolished by Sarah Palin.

  20. kiksadi50 says:

the “founding fathers” of alaska are the Native Alaskan people, & despite the best efforts of many non-Natives,yes, there are many still living today. Why didn’t Maddow interview some Native Alaskans,& ask them how they feel about the Alaskan Constitution? or how they feel about the lack of civil rights granted to Nat.Alaskans by the Alaskan Constitution.S.Moore does not speak for all Alaskans, and I wish that MSNBC would stop treating her like she does.Interview a Native Alaskan leader once in a while. You would be surprised at how articulate & informed they are.Of course you might not like what they have to say regarding the way they have been and are treated by the Alaska Constitution. Most of the Native Corps. in Alaska, plus the Ak. Fed.of Nat.(AFN)just came out for Murkowski. What does that tell you, Shannyn, about the democratic party in Ak.? Moore’s denial regarding Palin’s political pull is incredible.Palin is going to run for pres. & she just might win unless democrats don’t stop being so smug & do something about it.We better all hope that when Scott loses, & he will, it is Lisa that is left standing.

  21. tallimat says:

I’m still kinda speechless about this visit.

Auntie was introduced to the Maddow Show last night She really got caught up with the cheering folks at TapRoot. Golly, you’d think she was number one cheerleader at a basketball game with a rival village team.

Auntie and my hubby have had interesting conversations about the availability of news coverage back in the village. These two will talk for hours.

Im really thankful Alaskans came out with the welcome carpet for the Maddow show. Even the weather was beautiful !

My aunt did have one complaint. Maddow didn’t show enough of Scott. And quite frankly, I think antie has a crush on the guy. LOL

    • Polly says:

They say one in three voter decides who they are voting for in the final week.

What suspense. Hope your auntie spreads the word.

    • Moose Pucky says:

      (((tallimat and Auntie)))

    • dreamgirl says:

No newscasts even mentioned or showed McAdams because of the rubber-necking of the Miller fiasco-campaign.

Racheal Maddow gave McAdams the spotlight he deserved. If people are interested in voting in the Alaskan elections they’d better google: Scott McAdams best senator for Alaska.

    • bubbles says:

(((Auntie)))….the lady has good taste. i kinda, sorta like him too. he’s got them dimples working.

  22. Baker's Dozen says:

Does Dr. Rachel Maddow have a degree in communications? No, but she sure knows how!

My girl’s degree in public policy from Stanford and doctorate from Oxford can beat up your girl’s degree in communications from Potato U. with the doctorate tied behind her back while also too beating up your boy’s degree from Yale at the same time also! 🙂

  23. CO almost native says:

Wonderful! *Waving* (a little late) to all the mudpups in Alaska!

  24. Zyxomma says:

I dedicated my viewing of Rachel’s Anchorage visit to the next Senator from the great state of Alaska: Scott McAdams.

How lovely to see so many of my internet friends in the Taproot audience.

  25. leenie17 says:

I was so excited to hear Rachel last night that I missed seeing just about everyone in the audience the first time around. When I watched again, I was able to spot AKM, Linda and Spouse (Hi, Spouse!) and I THINK I saw Mr. Whitekeys as well.

How utterly cool to see all your bright, shining faces on national tv!!!

I also found it interesting to contrast the wall-to-wall smiles on the faces of the audience behind Rachel with the angry mob of Miller supporters outside. Maybe they need a good dose of fiber because SOMETHING is definitely making them very cranky!

    • Bear Woman says:

They seem to think anger fuels them and wins votes! HA!!!! I had a Murky supporter and a non-voter decide to vote for Scott because I was reasonable, nice, liked their dogs and gave them some attention, smiled and said thank you for you time!

      • dreamgirl says:

Most American voters ARE resonable…. and vote that way… the Media only focus on the EXTREMES. the main voters are reasonable and mainstream.

Go Scott McAdams! — Vote Values!!!

  26. Megaera says:

Rachel Maddow is my idol. She is so cool and so damn smart. And fair. The lady is fair. She interviewed all the candidates. I thought they all showed their true colors. BWAHAHAHAHAAAA..> (Lisa!) (Whackjob!)

  27. Fun times – 🙂

  28. BeeJay says:

It was fun to watch Rachel, and see the Anchorage crowd! What a wonderful vibe across the ‘net! Sorry, it was all so good, forgive me the exclamation points!!

    GO SCOTT!!

    • BeeJay says:

Not to mention seeing AKM, Linda Kellen Biegel, and Shannyn! Way to go, progressive Alaskan bloggers! No pj’s last night, although someone should have worn some, just to tweek SP’s ire. Must stop typing to avert exclamatory disease…

  29. futurexpat? says:

It was a great show, but then she never fails. It was also great seeing people we know in the audience! Thanks to all who put this together.

  31. Molly says:

Joe Miller is *SO* busy that he could only bestow on Rachel 6 minutes of his precious time, then wouldn’t answer the question about whether he thinks being homosexual is inborn.

I had a blast reading from his personnel file. Loved the part about his abusing his FMLA, and every time I read that his (blacked out)–surgery? medical procedure? appt? vasectomy? what??– was cancelled, I read it as “ECT”. It was amusing that way.

In fact, I think we should all try to guess at what it was that was cancelled, that caused his FMLA not to be FMLA anymore, and cut short his allowed leave, and then caused him to resign since he got caught not having had the whatever done that would justify his FMLA.

He sounds like a whiny baby in his emails to his supervisor.

  32. pvazwindy says:

Is there a planned protest rally set for tomorrow, the 28th? Protesting both Miller and Palin, at the convention center.

    • far from fenway fan says:

Given the release of the personnel records this week, I would if the Queen will suddenly have a scheduling conflict!

  33. Rai says:

What a fabulous installment! The excitement was infectious through the TV all the way down into Tucson!

  34. Kimosabe says:

Is Taproots the old Fly By Night club, home of Mr. Whitekeys’ Whalefat Follies?

  35. WakeUpAmerica says:

What a fun event! I’m so excited that the Alaskan bloggers finally have received the recognition that you all so richly deserve. Now would you please form a posse and haul your rogue’s sorry butt back to your state? Please…

    • Bear Woman says:

The witch is coming back to Alaska to supposedly campaign for Miller on Thursday. I’m sure there will be folks in the crowd recording every word and crowd actions/reactions. Then she’s off to other parts of the country, which is where she would obviously rather live.

    • Bones AK says:

We don’t want her, how a bout dropping her of in Idaho?

  38. Ripley in CT says:

It was an awesome show. And I must say, for the first time, I saw the Liberal bias that the “others” speak of…. and I loved it! Good timing for Rachel to do this… she made McAdams look great and the other two look like pedantic buffoons. They couldn’t get anything right!! LOL That Mercowsky sure knows how to flip-flop, eh?

    • Dionne in FL says:

That wasn’t Rachel making Miller and Murkowski look like pedantic buffoons. That was Miller and Murkowski just being who they are.

  39. Kath the Scrappy says:

Just awesome (I’ve only watched the whole show twice)! Rachel delivered just like I expected. Fair and attempted balance (well, as much as Miller would allow). Fun to watch Miller running like a little girl. McAdam’s campaign office was excellent, all that happy and eager support from so many volunteers, even youngsters (truly needed to be seen).

This turned out fantastic. Thanks Alaskans and Maddow Crew!

Yikes, poor Rachel and Crew must not get any sleep. Can’t wait to see what she does in Nevada!!! Waiting with popcorn, that Angle lady seems to run a lot but I bet she can’t run as fast as Rachel.

    • ali says:

OT, but it bugs me when I see comments about “running away like a little girl.” Are all girls cowardly and timid?

Miller ran like a cowardly bully being called on the carpet; why not put it that way?

      • Zyxomma says:

No, many girls are brave! As a little girl who grew up to be a still-little woman, I appreciate your saying this so clearly. Miller ran away like a little coward.

      • dreamgirl says:

It bugs me too and also. More acceptable might be –‘He was running like a jackass stung by a bee’.

        Any mention of :

        “He cried like a girl”,

        “Where are his Cohoneis”? (balls)

Are sort of sexist comments. Not really, they ARE sexist comments.

        • bubbles says:

’He was running like a jackass stung by a bee’.

          writing that one down. wonderful.

    • Valley_Independent says:

It’s really hard to be around Scott McAdams and not catch the enthusiasm. He’s a really nice, positive guy that wants to move us forward and is in this for all the right reasons.

My favorite part of the show last night was when Rachel commented on how she interviewed him once at the fair, and again before the show, and that he was the exact same guy with the exact same positions, only he’s gotten better at getting them across. He’s genuine, and I’m more impressed with his abilities each time I see him. I wasn’t sure he was up to the task at our first quick meeting, but I’ve asked questions about him and of him, and I’m certain he is now. I really hope people will join me in voting their values, not their fears.

      • leenie17 says:

Isn’t it amazing how easy it is to keep your message and public persona consistent when it’s the genuine you?!? It makes things SO much simpler when you don’t have to remember the fabrications, obfuscations, half-truths, distortions and lies that came before!

I’m so thrilled that Scott is finally getting the media attention he deserves, and that more people can see and hear how much he cares for Alaska and the Alaskan people. He is clearly in this race for the right reasons and it seems as though the voters are beginning to recognize that.

        • Bones AK says:

Mark Twain spoke to it “If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.”

          • prisonernumbersix says:

          • dreamgirl says:

Yup. Also @ priseonernumbersix, also yup. Love Mark Twain– he was a smartie extrodinaire (sp)! (not like moi).

Very cool to see Whitekeys in the audience. Must have been quite a thing to see in his old digs.

    • Kath the Scrappy says:

Can’t figure out which is Whitekeys (I’m not from AK). Was he the guy in the hat? I know he is a beloved figure.

      • InJuneau says:

No, he was the guy with somewhat wild white hair and beard; he showed up in some of the larger crowd shots and was sitting on the bench type seats I think.

    • prisonernumbersix says:

It was great seeing Mr. Whitekeys in the audience! It was like “Old home week!” We have every piece of his work we can get our hands on, including an obscure CD we found at Title Wave.

      Viva Spenard! Viva Muldoon!

      • puffin shrapnel palin says:

LOVE Mr. Whitekeys. So pumped to see him in the crowd. Would have enjoyed a chat between him and Rachel.

  41. Muppet says:

Loved seeing you all on Rachel last night. I have been off the grid lately (vacation finally, ahhhhh) so it was a great surprise to see you all. Yeah!

  42. Nan (aka roswellborn) says:

    What a wonderful, fantastic experience!

Saw the episode and loved seeing Maddow’s take on all this. It was good to see McAdams coming across so well, too.

Crazy “interview” with Miller; seemed as if he was sprinting for his vehicle in spite of “giving an interview” More like a 100-yard dash with words if ya ask me. Complete with his ducking into the vehicle right after one last awkward question (- that he didn’t answer – but what else would you expect, eh?)

    Just… spiffy

    • Millie says:

Crazy interview w/Murkowski too. Rachel would ask her questions and Lisa would not answer directly. (reminded me of Palin!)

    • puffin shrapnel palin says:

The wacky Miller interview reminded me of Mad TV’s parody of “The West Wing”.

Scott McAdams actually cares for all Alaskans. Vote McAdams!!!
