Palin Overwhelmed by Counter-protesters in Madison

Mama Grizzlies are an Invasive Species: Sarah Palin Mobilizes Just 500 Tea Party Dullards in Madison Amidst Overwhelming Counter Protest.

By Patrick DePula

(Madison, WI) When the Americans for Prosperitysponsored Tea Party Rally was announced several weeks ago, most left-leaning Madisonians yawned.  AFP rubes have been gathering on the Capitol Square annually for the last couple of years around tax day in small numbers to revel in their selfishness and celebrate their ignorance.  Initially, it was assumed that this years event would be no different and drew little attention.

Enter the derailing train that is Sarah Palin.  This overcompensated and appropriately uninformed spokesperson for the national tea party movement rolled into town late, and left early.  Unless you were watching her speech on television, conveniently piped through the press box attached to the sound system, you couldn’t hear much.  An overwhelming cacophony of boos, jeers, bells, drums, vuvuzuelas, whistles and air horns effectively rendered her inaudible.

No matter how FOX news might describe this event, in truth it was an abject failure.  From the massive jumbo-tron tv screens, to the walls built specifically to corral tea party supporters in order for the sparse crowd to appear larger on television, it was all about smoke and mirrors.

Like the production itself, her speech was filled with lies and distortions.  Some notable excerpts and commentary:

Gov Walker, He’s not trying to hurt union members. Hey, folks, he’s trying to save your jobs and your pensions!” Wait, save pensions? The Wisconsin State Retirement system is fully funded, and has over $80 Billion in assets.  It is one of the strongest pension systems in the country.  How is Scott Walker trying to save pensions? And from what, himself?

“This Tea Party movement is real solidarity!” Really? Because you are a group of people sharing what common interests, sympathies, or purpose? Oh yeah, racism is one of them. Misplaced anger is another.

“You saw the forces aligned against fiscal reform. You saw the obstruction and the destruction. You saw these violent rent-a-mobs trash your capital(sic) and vandalize businesses.” What? When did any of this happen? I mean, I’ve been organizing events at the capitol since the protests began and I know I haven’t been paid by anyone, nor have I issued any checks.  It is also interesting that Sarah Palin is using her speech to break previously unreleased news about businesses allegedly being vandalized.  This is an abject lie. In over 60 days of protesting there have only been a handful of disorderly conduct arrests while 100’s of thousands of people massed on the square. No businesses have been vandalized, that’s pure fiction.

“That’s right. The Tea Party Movement wouldn’t exist without Barack Obama.” That’s correct Sarah. The Tea Party exists in large part because Barack Obama is black.

“but President Obama flushed a trillion dollars down the drain on a useless “stimulus” package and then he bragged about the jobs he “created” in congressional districts that don’t even exist! That’s right; on this, White House, you lie.” Wait a minute Sarah. Remember your above comments?  Remember when you talked about the violent rent-a-mobs and vandalized businesses? All confirmed lies. Furthermore, the fiscal crisis was created by Wall Street and unchecked greed.  What are you doing about that? Oh yeah, nothing.

“The radical left caused the working men and women of this country to get up off their sofas, to come down from the deer stand, get out of the duck blind, and hit the streets, come to the town halls, and finally to the ballot box.” So what do you call our little welcoming party in Madison, Ms. Palin? We weren’t bussed in like your 500 supporters.  It is Governor Walker’s assault on working families that has caused us to assemble at the capitol for over 60 days, and to draw crowds approaching 200,000.  How many buses does it take to transport 200,000 people to a rally?  Where would they even park? And please don’t forget that we are working men and women too.

“Now, our president isn’t leading, he’s punting on this debt crisis. The only future Barack Obama is trying to win is his own re-election! He’s willing to mortgage your children’s future to ensure his own. And that is not the audacity of hope. That’s cynicism!” Sarah, what about your future? How much did Americans For Prosperity pay you to attend this rally? We know you don’t do anything for free.  And why are you in Madison spending the bulk of your short time here railing against Obama?  Are you thinking about your future presidential aspirations? Or are you here for Scott Walker.  Wait…we know the answer.  You are here for yourself.

“Well, Mr. President, the most basic tenet in that social compact is adhering to the consent of the governed. That would be “We the People.” President Obama, you do not have our consent. You didn’t have it in November. And you certainly don’t have it now. You willfully ignored the will of the American people.” Now this is funny.  One could make the same argument about Scott Walker, except that well, 200,000 people have massed on the square in opposition to his policies. Yet he insists that the bulk of 20,000 emails sent from the warm comfort of people’s homes, many of them from out of state, represent the feelings of the majority of Wisconsinites.  That’s right, ignore the 200,000 people standing at your front door, in the rain, snow and freezing temperatures.  Dismiss them as bussed in union thugs, while trumpeting the email support your have.  Smart.

“And Madison, you defended the 2010 electoral mandate. You are heroes, you are patriots, and when the history of this Tea Party Movement is written, what you accomplished here will not be forgotten.”

Madison? Sarah, those tea party folks you spoke to aren’t from Madison. Madison was what surrounded them and drowned you out. And we won’t forget.  We’ll always remember the day that Sarah Palin came to Madison and Jumped the Shark at her anemic tea party rally.

That said, I missed most of Sarah’s speech as it happened.  I was busy on the other side of the capitol running the counter rally.  And what a contrast between the two! Our rally consisted of Wisconsin speakers that included WTDY Radio Personality “Sly” Sylvester, Mayor Soglin, Sen. Jon Erpenbach, Firefighters Local 311 President Joe Conway, UW Professors, County Board Supervisor Melissa Sargent and her beautiful family, and local music act The Kissers.  Their rally imported Andrew Brietbart, Sarah Palin, A Mediocre Christian Country Anti-Liberal Vocalist from GA, John Fund, and other outsiders.  Kinda speaks volumes, doesn’t it?

Strictly for entertainment: this is probably one of the best signs spotted at the counter rally.

SARAH WHO?? SARAH WHO?? OH YES, THE KOCH BROTHERS

    PLAYMATE!!

  2. marcuswelbymd says:

Sarah Palin would make a good dictator. It doesn’t matter to her that the majority of people in Wisconsin and every other state want to puke when they see her picture or hear her voice. She doesn’t care. That’s the reason someone like her is considered dangerous, as all dictators are – they have no regard for what the majority think or wish.

Great job by the protesters in Madison. It was 10-1 against her and I think all Sarah thought of was the sanitized coverage Fox News would give her. However, she is also thin-skinned and probably threw a hissy fit backstage, as another poster noted.

Politically, she’s done. Too much drivel, drama, and extremist views, and linine her pockets with lots of cash from the duped suckers.

  3. JUST A THOUGHT says:

ANNE – WELL SAID! PALIN IS NOTHING BUT A WELL PAID CORPORATION

WHORE. SHE IS AN IDIOT!! A TALKING, WALKING PUPPET FOR THE

    KOCH BROTHERS.

  4. Anne says:

As always, Palin came down on the wrong side of the issue. It was especially insulting that she claimed solidarity with union workers and then had the nerve to say that Walker is trying to save jobs. When he was here in DC a week ago, he was reamed by some Democratic congressmembers and was forced to admit that union busting has nothing to do with the state’s budget. Of course, Palin’s insatiable need for attention has been frustrated by the relatively low media coverage she has lately received. She must be doing a slow burn as she watches her fellow GOP clown Donald Trump steal the spotlight. So, she had to do something to prove she is “relevant.” All she has proven is that she is a corporate whore who is ready to say or do anything to get paid. I sincerely hope that the well-deserved reception she got in Wisconsin is only the first of such receptions.
It could hardly happen to a more deserving human being.

  5. MadCityKaren says:

“An overwhelming cacophony of boos, jeers, bells, drums, vuvuzuelas, whistles and air horns effectively rendered her inaudible.” Count me in for one of the air horns mentioned. (I gave another air horn to a sweet couple next to me.)

I still have to wonder if SP threw a hissy fit after her ‘screech’ demanding to know “Who screened the attendees?” This is what happens when the ‘participants’ aren’t pre-screened (or worse, paying) to hear her speak/screech. And hearing the audio on the video clips afterwards, she sounded super freaked out by the counter-protesters. Methinks we did our job quite well.

The lying thingy with her really gets old, doesn’t it?
Now it’s invisible rent a mobs and vandals? Sheesh.

Gotta tell you she’s overwhelmed most of the time.
She can’t and won’t admit it but she is…

    Go WI!

  9. 13 School buses from around the state, at least 2 of them were cancelled due to no interest, probably more. This festival of the retarded cost them 24.99 each, just to ride on a school bus. I’m pretty sure it included lunch too. Never mind all our locally owned librul restaurants that use locally sourced ingredients. I’m sure the VIP school bus convoy stopped at Applebees on the way out of town.

I have to say, this was truly and outstanding day to be a Madisonian.

  10. Simple Mind says:

Hunter penned a fine essay over on Daily Kos that I will try to summarize. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/04/17/965571/-No-We-Cant?detail=hide The most striking thing about Palin and the Republican vision is its sheer defeatism. The United States can’t do it anymore. We are a failure. Every other industrial nation in the world can provide their citizens with access to healthcare, but the United States can’t. Most every other nation can provide protections for its elderly, but the United States can’t. It wasn’t always that way. The United States of the past could build highways and power grids, run railroads and energy plants, but the United States of the present can’t. The United States of the past could take on the race to the moon and even a World War, but the United States of the present can’t. We just can’t. We have to give up. “Tighten our belts,” Let our seniors descend into poverty. Let our neighbors die of preventable disease. Rip off mountaintops and bury rivers to burn cheap coal to power our disintegrating power grid. We’re just not up to the challenge anymore, according to Palin and the Republicans. They call this patriotism? The heck with them. We’re better than that.

    • bubbles says:

oh yes we are! i absolutely agree.

      • mo says:

“Republicant” is a variation that I find apt.

Friends don’t let friends vote Republicant.

    • mike from iowa says:

You forgot to say rethugs want to give the wealthy more welfare to make up for all the years they weren’t wealthy enough. That, according to them, would solve all our problems.

  11. mag the mick says:

About a week ago, I contributed to a post here about why it’s important not to give in to despair. One problem with despair is that it makes you believe that nothing will ever change. It robs you of the chance to be surprised. Today ended with two strong anti-despair stories. Here in Arizona, Republican Governor Jan Brewer vetoed two important bills penned by tea-baggers and approved by the Senate. She vetoed the bill that would require all presidential candidates to show a valid birth, baptism, or circumcision certificate. She vetoed the sucker! She also vetoed a bill allowing people to carry firearms onto state campuses. She remarked that these bills will not forward the state’s political or social fortunes; they won’t move the state forward.

My point is made. Don’t despair, don’t rule out the possibility of change, don’t give up on being surprised. With that good news, I bid you goodnight.

    • Gramiam says:

Apparently, Jan’s visit to Alaska to rub elbows with Quittypants made her realize that she needed to get back on her meds!

Also, it seems that the dumbies in the Arizona Legislature passed a law demanding that prospective candidates show a type of Birth Record that Arizona stopped using in 1997, when they began issuing the form that President Obama offered when asked for his Birth Certificate. FYI it is also the same one issued by California, as mine is.

    • Irishgirl says:

      That is good news.

    • mike from iowa says:

The bill actually said circumcision? Whatever, pray tell, will they come up with next? Mag, Slip apparently knows what became of Halcyon’s husband and the chamber maid, but he is too much of a gentleman to tell. I suggest we rack him or waterboard him. That information might just be the missing evolutionaty detail that unlocks the whole Universe and explains why I continue to vote Democratic in the throes of my despair. What say you,por favor?

    • Dagian says:

“…all presidential candidates to show a valid birth, baptism, or circumcision certificate.”

      *snorts*

So a circumcision certificate alone will suffice for a male candidate? That’s bizarre. Which Bozo came up with THAT one? Talk about too much information of a certain nature!

    • Dagian says:

IF it had passed, I wonder how female circumcision would have played into their paperwork. Not that I condone female circumcision, just tossing it out for consideration.

      • mike from iowa says:

I pity the fool who would be given the job of checking for female circumcisions.

  12. marcuswelbymd says:

I’ve seen clips of Palin’s visit to Madison. There were very few Tea Party people there. Estimation of 500 of them outnumbered 10 – 1 by protesters who came to boo Silly Sarah. How many of the 500 Tea Party people were bused in by Koch dollars we don’t know.

The vast majority of people in Wisconsin and every other state can’t stand the sight of Sarah Palin. It’s like overexpose to Snookie, although I prefer Snookie any day, because at least Snookie is honest.

Palin: “The radical left caused the working men and women of this country to get up off their sofas, to come down from the deer stand, get out of the duck blind, and hit the streets …”

Working?– from their sofas, deer stands and duck blinds?? What? Did she totally forget the working men and women in their Hoverounds?

Aside from the obvious pandering to the Second Amendment crowd (presumably the sofa-sitters are cleaning their guns after a rill Amurikan day of shooting ducks and deer), the only credible reference to actual working in her statement is “hitting the streets.” Yep, a “workin’ girl” would certainly know about hitting the streets….especially for $100,000 a pop.

Great analysis of Palin’s slop, Patrick. Happy to hear that the resonance frequency of her screeching was effectively overpowered by booing and cowbells. It’s a beautiful thing when purveyors of hate and lies are run out of town by cowbells. Bwahahaha. We don’t need no stinkin’ Second Amendment Remedies! We got First Amendment Cowbells! 🙂

I tweeted yesterday about her speech.

    Also, regarding her supporters:

I find it incredibly ironic that #GOP #teaparty members bussed in to #WIunion were in School Buses. #Irony

  19. Simple Mind says:

Sarah Who? …… After her epic fail following the Arizona shooting, Palin has to start screeching, and we’ll be hearing alot more from her soon. Unless she gets back in the ballgame, Bachmann and Trump will continue to steal away the wackadoodle vote, leaving Palin with sinking polls and a disintegrating brand. Her frustration is that her efforts to become a serious politician end every time she opens her mouth. Hopefully, she’s destined to become another Buchanon or Giuliani, a has-been politician appearing on the Fox News equivalent of Hollywood Squares.

The thing about the Tea Party is how many of them put their white robes and pointy hats in mothballs, and how many appear to be enjoying a fashion-comeback. Sarah Palin was supposed to be one generation removed from such horrors, but instead she appears to be want to be their leader.

Not only is it a fashion faux pas to wear white before Memorial Day, the whole mindset is beyond disgusting and horrifying. Not everything about “the good old days” was GOOD.

Everything she says is a lie and I am not even sure she even knows what truth is anymore. Maybe she never did. I can’t even believe there are still people left (other than white republican males with viagra) that even think this woman is fit for office or even fit to comment on what goes on in our world. I don’t even think she is fit to be a mother and even though her kids seem to be brats I still at some level feel sorry for them.

Who would ever believe we would still be talking about this woman? Why didn’t she just go back home and be a governor? I was so hopeful we would never ever here the name Palin ever again. At this point in time, and yes I know that Alaska is a wonderful place to visit, I just could not visit it in the near future. It is a shame that Alaska got such a bad rap. Don’t know how you can all stand it there. When I here she is anywhere near OH I want to run for cover:)

And yet, according to Fox and the right leaning sites, Sarah just gave the speech of the century. Heck it was the best stump speech in history. No matter that, as usual, it was full of lies, hatred toward the elected President, and disdain for workers. Now that she is one of the elite, she has no use for the little people except as pawns in her ‘game.’ Someone should tell her that running the US is no game, and that she is not even a player, just a shill for Breitbart and the Kochheads. And Breitbart ought to be ashamed, but somehow being a Republican nowadays means never ever admitting a lie or a mistake. Must be tough to sleep at night.

    • aussiegal77 says:

Hahaha – if they’re spinning this speech of hers as fantastic then I hope it encourages her to give more of the SAME. Maybe by mid summer she can drive her approval rating to the single digits???

Yes please, Sarah, more self destruction please!

    • ks sunflower says:

Wow – they have really, really, really low standards, don’t they if that was a great speech.

  39. aussiegal77 says:

“When the history of the Tea Party movement is written” it will be revealed that they completely misunderstood what the original Boston Tea Party was all about (protesting tax cuts to a large corporation – the East India Trading Company), that the movement was in fact an astro-turf, corporate funded organisation that had nothing to do with working people and consistently attacked middle class Americans at the behest of the Koch brothers. Also too, Sarah Palin showed up that one time in Madison, WI to make a speech, rail at the President (why again? this was about Scott Walker and the unions in WI….) and make several unfounded and untrue statements.

    • aussiegal77 says:

She never ceases to amaze me with the overflowing hatred she possesses against Barack Obama. If hate were people, Palin would be China.

And what is with the bony finger jabbing furiously when she talks? It’s almost as irksome as her trademark sneer/smirk. GWB was annoying but he pales in comparison on Palin – she is so very poisonous!

Seriously this woman is deranged. I bet most people just look at her in horror and silently thank their lucky stars she isn’t VP. She’s more than a train wreck now, she’s a freak show. I can’t look away, it’s just so grotesque.

      • AKaurora says:

Her jabbing bony finger is reminiscent of the Witch Witch of the West threatening, “I’ll get you, my pretty … and your little dog too!” She does stay in character, doesn’t she?

      • leenie17 says:

That kind of perpetual anger and hate has GOT to eat you up from the inside out. It would truly be sad if she hadn’t left so much destruction in her wake.

Each time I see her, she seems closer and closer to a full meltdown. I can’t imagine going through life with your only goal being to destroy people and elevate yourself.

    • ks sunflower says:

Well said, aussiegal77, well said and it bears repeating until the Palin fans understand: “When the history of the Tea Party movement is written” it will be revealed that they completely misunderstood what the original Boston Tea Party was all about (protesting tax cuts to a large corporation – the East India Trading Company). . . .”

To me, a person that grew up in Madison during the 60s and 70s, I view Palin’s visit as an intrusion onto sacred ground (no religious connotations expressed or implied). ~G

  41. g says:

Ah, so their 2010 “mandate” where an incredibly small percentage of eligible voters turned out, trumps (I mean to use that word!) the 2008 mandate where significantly more voters put Barack Obama in the White House?

  42. She’ll be overwhelmed by more than crowds and noise when I get done with the post I’m working on.

  43. Xenon says:

“I am AFP.” Yes sarah, you ARE “A F—ing Plunderer.”

  44. Zyxomma says:

Patrick, thanks so much! Too bad she-of-the-bad-cartoon-voice-and-tinfoil-blazer doesn’t read, doesn’t listen, and doesn’t care (as long as the check clears).

Tonight beginning at sundown is first seder, first night of Passover, where we celebrate our liberation from slavery in Egypt. I invite everyone at The Mudflats to share in this celebration of freedom, whether from oppressive employers, joblessness, or RWNJ demagoguery. The festive meal follows handwashing, blessings, singing, and prayers, the opening of the door to invite the prophet Elijah (for whom a place is set at the table, including the largest wineglass), and explaining the Exodus and our traditions to the young. We stand in unison against those whose only desire is freedom from paying their taxes. Tikkun olam shalom.

    • fishingmamma says:

Thank you for this reminder. I am not jewish, but once attended a seder dinner at our church that was intended to teach us what the holiday means. It was very moving.

I wish you and your family a very peaceful holiday.

    • ks sunflower says:

I agree with fishingmama, the symbolism is very moving. I had the privilege to attend a seder at the home of coworker. It was a beautiful ceremony.

I love your sentence: “We stand in unison against those whose only desire is freedom from paying their taxes.”

May you and your loved ones and those lucky enough to know you have gain strength from the holiday and keep peace in their hearts throughout the coming year in safety and health.

    • bubbles says:

Zyxomma a blessed holiday to you and yours.

    • CorningNY says:

I attend a Unitarian Universalist church, and we had a Seder this past Sunday. It was very interesting to learn about the history and customs of Passover. It’s never a bad thing to celebrate freedom–as long as that freedom is not used to oppress others.

  45. WakeUpAmerica says:

“…to revel in their selfishness and celebrate their ignorance…” Best line of this marvelous post.

    • Pinwheel says:

      Patrick,

I know I’m late to this particular party. Congratulations for once more giving to us what we are hungary to receive. That ‘celebrate ignorance’ needs to be on a bumper sticker. See how many can be sold.

      Thanx again.
