Palin’s Movie “The Undefeated” Heads for DVD

In the Sarah Palin documentary, “The Undefeated,” one of the more evocative scenes of violence was when the bloggers (played by a ravenous pack of lionesses) chased down and tackled a hapless terrified zebra (Sarah Palin). If I were making a documentary about the documentary itself, this would be the zebra massacre scene, with the movie reviewers and the general public played by the lionesses, and the movie itself played by the doomed zebra. Let’s just say that things aren’t going well.

After extensive polling to find her still-remaining pockets of support, one of the theaters selected for the premiere was in Orange County, California. Despite the breathless tweets of the faithful that The Undefeated would be “bigger than Harry Potter,” that particular premiere showed to an almost empty house. There was the critic himself, and then the pair who couldn’t get in to Harry Potter and thought The Undefeated was an action flick. They left the theater after ten minutes, which is disappointing because if they had just waited around, they could have enjoyed all the action-packed explosions and earthquakes, and cars getting flattened by bridges, and high-speed traffic accidents – and of course, the epic carnivore v. herbivore pile-on. But the impatient are not rewarded, so the confused movie goers left thinking The Undefeated was a brain-numbing, flag-waving, prostration to a woman whose political ship is headed for the rocks. In their defense, that’s what everyone else thought too.

The first week, The Undefeated’s weekend gross was $65,000, compared to $170 million for Harry Potter. The second week, “The Unprofitable” dropped to $24,000. Looks like that stupid movie about a Godless warlock did manage to eek out a slight monetary victory over Alaska’s very own Joan of Arc. The grumbling of Palinbots is audible.

So, alas and alack, The Undefeated after being defeated, is heading the way of the box-office flop —→ Straight to DVD, and Pay per View. But just like all things Palin, defeat comes with a yummy candy-coated shell. Behold the concession speech from filmmaker Stephen Bannon, and if you have inner-ear difficulties, you might need to medicate or take a seat because the spinning might cause you problems.

Ready?

“Given the strong audience reaction, we have determined there is overwhelming demand to get this film out broadly enough to cover the entire nation in September and October,” he said.

It’s not going to DVD because it was an unmitigated and spectacular failure. No. It’s going to DVD because the reaction was so overwhelming, the filmmaker realized that it “needed broader distribution” and soon. It was a matter of principle.

Don’t believe it? Well, the rave reviews are in!

“A straight hagiography,” says the New York Times Magazine
“Thunderously repetitive!” raves the L.A. Times
A 0% rating from Rotten Tomatoes – you can’t GET a more extreme rating than that!
I loved it so much I wanted to shove a fork in my temple, gushed Jeanne Devon of The Mudflats.
And audiences give it a whopping 2.3 out of five stars!

The Palm d’Or at Cannes is probably just a technicality at this point.

You can catch this epic saga via Pay per View on September 1, or wait until October 4 if you want to purchase the DVD so you can have it forever and watch it over and over again with the family. Of course, if you just can’t wait that long, you can get a copy of the coveted film sent to you by simply donating $100 or more to SarahPAC – a small price to pay for a piece of cinematic history.

    BOX OFF MOJO
    Reported by Brandon Gray
    July 25, 2011

“Even if it had little to no advertising, Undefeated had far more media coverage than most other political documentaries and independent releases could ever dream of. The awareness was there”

  3. A Texian Observer says:

So The Undefeated has made around $90K in its first two weeks. That’s just about half the box office of The Human Centipede (First Sequence).

  4. Judi says:

    Judyinchicago..exactly..yahooo

I read this first thing in the morning…and cant stop laughing since…It truly made my day…yahoooo finally she is being dismissed…but then..look at the polls she is in second place and she is not even running…never mind…we know who is voting…

THANKS for the uplift today…as we watch the tea hate obama so much they would destroy our country…

  5. Cammie says:

It wouldn’t have even made the sales it did if it hadn’t opened during the Harry Potter weekend. Half of the tickets were probably sold to people who didn’t buy a Harry Potter ticket in time.

  6. Judychicago says:

Palin used to frighten me in a way. There was all the crazy attention on her. The constant media attention confused me because I thought (think) she is a deceitful, money hungry, media whore. Honestly, I AM capable of respecting someone I don’t always agree with. But in Sarah’s case I have no respect.

I now see that nature has taken it’s course. I can go online and not see her face for days. This whole fiasco has reminded me that patience is a good thing. Hard to have, but a very good thing.

Wishing you all have a peaceful day.

  7. Bev says:

Well, on to dvd and pay per view….guess the producer has to find some way to make back his so called million dollars back.

Spin on dvd sales will be told, but they will give them away with donations to Sarahpac, but tell others look how many were sold.

Or Sarah could buy them up and give them as stocking stuffers at Xmas.

    • OMG says:

Don’t be surprised if Murdoch uses News Corp to inflate sales…that’s how her first book was propelled to the Best Seller’s list prior to release. For ages they were giving copies away for signing up for this or that. They’ll probably do the same with the Indefensible…I mean the Unimaginable….I mean the Unrealistic….

Just how is she going to blame this poor performance on the left wing haters? Any guesses?

    • Baker's Dozen says:

Those left wing bloggers just all went, donchano, to see the Jesus hatin’ wizard movie just to take up all the parkin’ spaces and to make the lines all long and everything at the movies and all those mama grizzlies can’t wait in line that long without eatin’ their cubs and all that, so like, nobody also too could get to my movie and it was those nasty pajama hater bloggers from Alasssska that are makin’ all those uneddicatid libruls do that an’ vote for Obama who only has some degree from a place called Harvard in Cambridge, which is in London or Scotland or somethin’ an’ is a part of the English continent which is so big they got their own cable station called the English Chanel to tell about them, but they aren’t rill Umerikuns donchano ’cause they left when Paul Revereware shot any of them all of them dead when he was ringin’ those Taco Bells and handin out AK 47’s to all the slaves so they could write the Constitution and send it to Boy George III and declare their independence from tear-any and stop cryin’ ’cause now they were rill Umerikuns ‘cept they weren’t rilly ’cause you gotta be white ’cause we were here first an’ brought Sakajaweeya to marry Joseph Smith who was the first blogger ’cause he explored all those wet blogs and marshes ’cause he loved his freedom but everyone else hated freedom so they were libruls.

Thanks for the corrections and have changed the Harry Potter gross to $170 million. Not sure what I was thinking there…

  12. Art in Juneau says:

Cited is 1.7 million for Harry Potter. That’s a hefty amount over $65,000 for the first weekend. Actually, though, it’s even heftier. That 1st HP weekend grossed $169,189,427 (http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/series/HarryPotter.php)! I’m not playing gotcha and certainly not “makin’ things up,” just wanting to help develop the full magnitude of one picture with the public over the other. With thanks for The Mudflats,

I use to hang up when I got calls about the Reps running for office. But now I answer all their questions with a NO NO NO. Hope they get the message. Everynight on WHO TV, I hear all their ads–knocking each other out—wanting to win the straw-poll next month. The guy (can’t remember his name) with the 8 kids from Penn., I think, only had about a dozen people at one of his speeches.

    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2011/07/27/palin_to_keynote_tea_party_rally_in_iowa_110734.html

Gruschow praised the work of a highly motivated group of volunteers who have been setting the groundwork in Iowa for a Palin campaign, which almost all of them deem to be inevitable.

“I can only surmise that she’s very, very popular here,” Gruschow said of Palin’s level of support among Republican caucus-goers in Iowa. “And it didn’t hurt at all when she introduced her movie in Pella. The feedback I’ve gotten was it was an awesome movie, and there are more people becoming more endeared to her.”

Palin has been relatively quiet over the past month, as she has retreated to Alaska to immerse herself in policy and to strategize with her husband, Todd, and top advisers about how a potential campaign would work.

SarahPAC, Palin’s political action committee, has not hired a pollster or a media consultant, and Palin appears to have little interest in doing so, although the addition of a national press secretary may soon be on the horizon.

    • I think James O’Keefe ought to apply for the national press secretary position. Peas in a pod, peas in a pod.

    • Seriously? It sounds like Gruschow needs some help with his grip on reality. Where do these people live that they can’t see that Palin has played them for fools and taken their money without giving them anything in return?

I can only surmise that she’s very, very popular here,” Grushchow said. . . Well, that either means that no one should bet on anything this guy says or that caucus-goers in Iowa aren’t very smart. Why is it again that the whole country cares how they vote in Iowa? No offense to Iowans, but I just don’t look there to figure out what I think or how I feel about candidates.

  16. Motorhead says:

You know, when this “movie” was first being described before release, with the lioness attacking the zebra scene, I thought perhaps what the director was so rudely trying to allude to was Palin as the lioness taking down the half-black, half-white zebra [POTUS]. Disgusting imagery if that was intended, but that’s about all we hear from her these days anyway!
Oops, gotta run down to Walmart and get my early place in line for the “special edition” DVD. If I don’t start camping out in line now, I may not get one!!

Other than listening to dogs bark, at least the things listed @19, 19.1, and 19.1.1 are productive…and with the exception of sharing the salmon, maybe not the funnest things in the world, but a least there’s something to show for it once they’re done. Too bad “The Unfrigginbelievable” has not even a momentary scintilla of such redeeming qualities. beth.

    • And it was worth every penny I spent on my ticket. And then I went again during the next week with my daughter and son-in-law.

I won’t spend any money to see that pretend movie about SP, nor would I watch it if someone paid me. I value the functioning brain cells that I still have.

If a DVD doesn’t have great music, and a relaxing story—-forget it!!!!! We have enough two-legged animals running around the country right now.

just found this in my e-mail box today. The Reps are getting desparate.

House Republicans on Wednesday morning were calling for the firing of a top staffer at the conservative Republican Study Committee after he was caught sending emails to conservative groups urging them to pressure GOP lawmakers to kill the deficit plan proposed by Speaker John Boehner. The opposition from the right is the latest sign of deep divisions within the Republican party over how to handle the ongoing debt crisis.

Had to go look up “hagiographic.”

    Was dismayed to see this:

“texts concerning saints and other individuals believed to be imbued with the sacred”

But thoroughly enjoyed the next paragraph:

“The term “hagiographic” has also been used as a pejorative reference to the works of biographers and historians perceived to be uncritical or “reverential” to their subject.”

  26. aussiegal77 says:

Seems like Palin was….erm….defeated and rather soundly? Seriously though – how delusional is Bannon? Why does he blatantly ignore what really happened? Oh well, whatever, I’ve already seen the adverts in my On Demand. I’m sure the Oscar nom is on its way, then?

By the way – it’s natural for a lioness to chase a zebra. For food. That’s what happens in the wild. These are animals, they have instincts, they were made wonderfully by God that way. It was a weak analogy to begin with and as you delve deeper, it just becomes insane. Which is pretty much the best way I can describe the Palin Saga: weak tea to begin with and as we delve deeper, it’s just more and more insane.

    • prisonernumbersix says:

Don’t lions and other predators hunt the old and weak, i.e. the easier targets, and thereby cull the herd?

Not the best choice for a Palinalogy in my view!

  27. Buffalogal says:

The bots are out there buying up tickets in bulk, setting up “city ambassadors” to coordinate the gathering of bodies to fill the seats , sending out emails telling the faithful to see this movie again and again to prove to the media that it’s doing well.

I’m shaking my head and wondering , ” If she is so popular, wouldn’t the seats just naturally be filled ? ”

It’s not like there are gangs of thug liberals hanging around the ticket booths carrying baseball bats, biting the heads off of Sarah bobblehead dolls and plastic zebras . They opened the movie in cities they calculated to be Palin friendly and yet, nuthin.

My daughter’s indie short film ran 7 minutes, took $200 to make and won an award in the 48 Hour Film Project. It took in $500 dollars when they showed it in the back room of Manny’s Italian Restaurant in South Buffalo. I think that stacks up pretty well to “The Underwhelming”. Of course , at my daughter’s showing there was free beer and shot specials. Perhaps Palin’s marketing folks should jot that down on their palms for the rollout of her next movie. There’s talk it will be animated and will guest star Scooby Doo who helps Sarah solve the mystery of the missing marbles.

It’s bound to do better than this last one …

    • LibertyLover says:

I’m pretty sure that Free Beer would have gotten the crowds to the theater…also, too.

      • Lani says:

Free dinner got them to the first showing in Iowa.

        • frsbdg says:

I’m surprised they haven’t resorted to rounding up homeless people to fill seats, promising them a hot dog and popcorn. Oh, wait – I forgot that Palinbots hate homeless people. Never mind…

    • MinNJ says:

: still chuckling: gangs of thug liberals!!! Thanks, I really needed that…

  28. ks sunflower says:

My husband said that on one of the evening MSNBC shows this week, a guest said of The Oft-Defeated that if you go to see it, you should take along 3-D glasses. He said, “The movie isn’t in 3D of course, but watching through the 3D glasses doesn’t make the movie any better but it puts everything out of sync and makes watching it more interesting.”

Gee, I think wearing ear plugs and closing your eyes might make it more interesting as well. You know, that way you can imagine it any way you want it or take a nap.

  29. HudsonElizabeth says:

Bannon didn’t exactly fabricate everything he said.

It did get a “strong audience reaction” — those who saw it hated it and their opinions kept every one else away.

Also, too, there probably was “overwhelming demand to get this film out” — from ARC who wanted it out of their theatres and now!

So, once those two conditions hit, all that was left was to do what every other producer/distributor of a dud does — send it to DVD and PPV.

  30. BigPete says:

By having even a pitifully small and short lived release “The Undefeated” -technically- avoids being classified as a “straight to DVD” clunker. The faithful will actually be paying for a “theatrical release”.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dfoVqhQVyQ

  31. Diane says:

I wonder if it will be a collectors item in 50 years or so?

    • Zyxomma says:

In a word, NO. DVDs are not the permanent, perfect, digital storage medium we were promised when they debuted. Not only can they be scratched, making portions of them unreadable by the laser, they get brittle when they’re old. VHS is bulky, and can tear, but I still prefer my tapes (though for how much longer, I can’t say).

    • Dagian says:

No, but if you can get your hands on the poster and refrain from vomiting upon it, THAT might fetch money someday.

I’d hope the satirical poster I linked to above would fetch more money–it may be available on the Zazzle shop listed on the blog.

“The first week, The Undefeated’s weekend gross was $65,000, compared to $1.7 million for Harry Potter. The second week, “The Unprofitable” dropped to $24,000.”

There is sweet justice in the world.

A far better movie featuring cats is Disney’s “African Cats”. It’s over-narrated, but a charming film nevertheless. I saw it at the drive-in with Thing 2. Despite it being geared to a younger audience than Thing 2 (and myself), we enjoyed it. Stick around to watch the credits roll!

Normally, I eschew all things Disney, but darn it–sometimes they don’t get it all wrong.

    • laingirl says:

It dropped the weekend they added 4 more screens, so it was showing in 14 theatres the second weekend. After that I can’t imagine any theatre owner wanting to extend the run. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving person.

    • Dagian says:

I caught an error in the reporting the HP 7.2 movie:

I was expecting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 to do big business but I was genuinely surprised when it hit $300 million worldwide in its first week of release.

  36. I See Villages From My House says:

I loved it so much I wanted to shove a fork in my temple, gushed Jeanne Devon of The Mudflats.

AKM, I’ve come to fear that you can’t give these unimaginative people (Palin’s bellicose supporters) ideas – they’ll menace you with forks any chance they get.

One of my favorite expressions used to be, “Thanks, but no thanks, I’d rather eat broken glass,” except now I suspect some Palin supporter would dream of feeding me broken shards, while making me watch The Undefeated – convinced I would ‘see the light’ and concede that the former first time half term quitting Governor was for real.

But as Sarah says, I lived it every day (her sense of governing) and it was uninspiring and now wholly contrived.

    • aussiegal77 says:
