Sarah Palin is at ‘Drop Dead’ +4, and Just Getting Started

Maggie Haberman and Ken Vogel of Politico got some interesting buzz today. Apparently they each have sources who tell them that a certain (looks around the room) “mystery candidate” has had someone at her OR HIS law firm, (shifts nervously) make a few strategic phone calls to certain early primary states (nudge nudge) to find out when certain filing deadlines for a certain high office in the executive branch might be… (wiggles eyebrows)

This particular law firm, called Baker Hostetler employs a particular lawyer named Mark Braden. Mr. Braden represents… SarahPAC, Sarah Palin’s political action committee. Go figure.

A certain “mystery blogger” in Alaska (holds back of hand in front of face and points to palm) notes, as do some irritated conservatives, that Palin declared her own “drop dead date” for her potential candidacy as September 30th. Careful scrutiny of a 2011 calendar reveals that we are now at Drop Dead +4, and counting.

Erick Erickson at the blog RedState notes:

She has said the “media” is not going to set a “drop date” for her, but she set this one. In fact, you can hear Sarah Palin on tape talking about the deadline here. Go to 2:42 on this from August 12, 2011.

Palin says, “”I have said that that August to September time line is important for a number of reasons.”

I believe it is Jake Tapper in the blue shirt who then asks her “So by next month?” which would be September.

Her response?

“I think that practically speaking that would have to be it, that drop dead date. Also, in fairness to supporters who are standing on the sidelines, this is what I’ve told Todd over and over again, I don’t want to be perceived as stringing people along.“

Apparently four days after her self-imposed drop dead date is the time to start asking when the filing deadlines are. There’s no such thing as being too prepared.

Remember that on September 20, SarahPAC donors got a letter saying that Palin was “on the verge” of making the decision about whether to run or not. “If only,” the letter suggested, “she knew you’d be there for her as evidenced by your immediate and large monetary donation… If only…. then she just might run.”  For those who wondered just how long a “verge” takes, we’re at Verge +14 days, and counting.

By her own admission, she certainly doesn’t want to “string people along” by playing some sort of “will she, won’t she” game, and act all coy about it while gorging herself on unearned media coverage by standing around and doing nothing. Not our Sarah.

So, back to the sneaky question from the sneaky lawyer.

The current thinking in GOP election law circles is that the first hard cut-off for entering the race is Oct. 28, when presidential candidates who hope to appear on the ballot in the New Hampshire primary would be required to submit a filing fee from a federally registered presidential campaign committee.

The bad news is, that we may in all likelihood be strung along for another 23 1/2 days. The good news is that there now is an actual “drop dead date” imposed on candidates not by their own whims, but by the state of New Hampshire.

Hang in there my friends, “the verge” will “drop dead” in a few short weeks, whether the mystery candidate likes it or not. (wink)

just announced the palmetto bug won’t put her name in the GOP nomination pool

  2. AKPetMom says:

As I understand it, if she announces, then SarahPac money can ONLY be used for the purposes of her campaign, and would no longer be available to use for any general purpose.

If she runs and doesn’t get the nomination, or runs and then withdraws, can the SarahPac money go back to being used for purposes other than campaigning, or is it a one way street and once you announce candidacy the money can’t go back into the “general fund”.

  3. Crunk Petrol says:

I have a question. Isn’t Oct 28th only a “drop dead” date if you want to run in a primary? When is the drop dead date if you want to run in the general? I assume that it is much later. If Sara is forming her own 3rd party, she won’t need a primary. As the annointed one of her Party of One, couldn’t she just run in the general election? I don’t remember Ross Perot having to run in any primaries.

  4. Gallagher says:

So Mark Braden makes a few phone calls to early primary states and (color me shocked), the word gets out! Anyone could quietly search out the primary deadline dates in about five minutes on their computer.

I’m guessing “Sarah on the verge” wasn’t quite as successful in getting the rubes to part with more of their money as they had hoped.

On to Plan B: “Sarah making calls”. Look for a new Sarahpac begathon to begin any day now.

  5. beth says:

“From the start, Ailes has steadfastly denied any such political bias or agenda on the part of his network. Politics, schmolitics: ‘I hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings,’ he declares.”
    ( From HuffPo, here: http://tinyurl.com/3ux69h6 )

Well, at least Ailes didn’t try to get us to buy into the fantasy and urban legend that $P is the least bit intellectual, knowledgeable, intelligible, competent, etc. beth.

  6. Xenon says:

If she doesn’t run, she’ll be cannibalized by the rabid hell hounds she’s spawned over the past few years. I would not want to be her when those particular chickens come home to roost.

  7. beth says:

Don’t let’s kid ourselves — she has been seriously ‘exploring’ and getting her ducks in a row for a run for the office of the President of the US for well over 9 months, now; everything is all set for her to just breeze in. She’s clever that way. It truly would be a mistake to think that just because no one has spotted any of ‘her people’ in key areas, that she hasn’t any one there — her tentacles are so long and so many, that she’s able to fly inder the radar. She’s insidious that way. We all know this.

I, personally, think she’s going to announce her candidacy…at the last possible moment. I *also* believe, in her announcement, she will say the reason it took so long to announce was: [insert 4 or 5 specific items, here. (eg. hardship to/on her family, sexism in politics, etc.)] By making that a key part of her announcement, she accomplishes two things:

    1. it will reestablish the ‘agreement’ she had with *all* media when she was running for VP: “handle with kid gloves because she is delicate and fragile and it would be detrimental to our image for us to come across as bullies by asking her for clarifications, specifics, explanations, etc..”, and,

    2. if she bows out of the race –because it’s too much work or for whatever ginned-up reason– she’ll be able to cite one of those items, she’ll get all sorts of sympathy as the adored victim of mean people who hate her, and she’ll come out smelling like a rose permanently entrenched in national politics as the sage ‘pundant’ for all things anti-Obama and as the wise king-maker for decades to come.

She is quite the piece of work. Dangerous, divisive, and soul-ugly as hell, but a piece of work nonetheless. beth.

    • beaglemom says:

I agree. I think that she’ll end up running but her dream is for the Republican leadership to beg her to be the candidate. That’s what she has been waiting for. At this point, I just want her to shut up, go away and live with all of her family on one or the other of her compounds. Maybe Todd can get a job again and she can waitress at the cafe in Wasilla or be the receptionist for her hairdresser’s shop.

  8. lemonfair says:

Don’t think she really sees New Hampshire as a deadline, since Romney’s going to win that anyway, and she could skip right over NH – especially as she believes she would win Iowa, and she might just possibly do that.

The fact that there is really not a viable alternative to Romney now probably makes a genuine dilemma for SP, since it makes it more likely she could get the nomination, and she never intended to do that.

But I still think it’s more likely she’ll run as an independent, knowing she wouldn’t be likely to win the election (she doesn’t really want to govern), but she’d be able to milk a run for all it’s worth. And she sure doesn’t want to have Republican handlers a second time.

  9. pvazwindy says:

Has the cutting room floor been swept clean? Or wasn’t there that much on it.

    • carol says:

Second that, I’m waiting also. As much as I tell myself I don’t want to hear any more about the quitter.

  10. Cammie says:

I doubt she’ll ever announce one way or another. Her bots have proven themselves dumb enough to believe anything. If she doesn’t declare after primary deadlines, why then, that just means she’s going to run as an Independent. In short: there’s still gold in them there hills!

  11. Omomma says:

I dunno. Seems to me Oct. 3 or 4 is a bit too late to be doing basic research, sending around initial queries, on filing dates.

    • Cammie says:

But you’re not the average bot who sends SarahPAC their utility bill money at the slightest hopeful drop of a hint.

  12. mikefromiowa says:

As Benny Hill once so elegantly stated-If a nun fell off a roof and landed on a clown-would that be vergin’ on the ridiculous? And he had never met her lowness, the Grifter Queen.

  13. Diane says:

I still say she will choose not to run, then claim her base is insisting on it and get in as a third party, Tea Party candidate.

By holding out this long, she has 1). made a ton of money at Fox, 2) missed all those debates that would have gotten her thrown out of the race, if people heard how incoherent she is. Think a female rick perry.

She has to realize(but maybe not) that she will have no protection. As much as she hated it, she was protected. She’s not smart enough to know that she needs it.

  14. 24owls says:

NH is a fun place to visit this time of year, not only are there tour buses from all over the east coast that drive through with loads of people looking at dying leaves falling off trees but there are tour buses with candidates or special interest groups driving through and looking for interested people to convince. Just about everyday you can find a pathway to some political function and talk to somebody that “wants to take our nation back”. I always wonder take back to where? Anyways I am happy to report that the Palin people have not set up a campaign office within the State anywhere, not even in the far north moose country where the lame stream media is scarce. So if she is verging, or leaning, or farting about entering the race there are zero signs here.

  15. barbara says:

maybe now some of her die hard fanatics will wake up to the fact that she is not the next coming of christ after all.

  16. Lani says:

While Palin tries to distract with the latest shiny thing, here are the groups that are joining #OccupyWallSt tomorrow: http://occupywallst.org/article/occupywallstreet-union-march-foley-square-wall-str/

  17. LibertyLover says:

Maybe Sarah’s planning an all out write-in candidate blitz for 2012? I mean it worked for Lisa M. didn’t it? What could be more Mavericky than that?

  18. Bob Benner says:

Don’t be duped.. Sarah Palin isn’t running for anything… Running for political office is hard work.. Being President is hard work.. Work is not something our Quitter ex-half term Guv likes… She’s proved that time and again in every “job” she’s ever had… Sarah is as lazy as they come when it comes to doing real work. She is content being a TV diva collecting money for giving her fans glimpses of her great “insights” as she babbles away on Fox to any talking head that will listen…

  19. laurie says:

Every now one of those Palmetto bugs get inside the house. They are fast moving disgusting things. Anyway, you can clobber them over and over and think they are dead and as soon as you turn around to get a dust pan or paper towel to get rid of the nasty little things…they start moving again.

I’m not sure why Sarah reminds me of them.

    • Kath the Scrappy says:

      ROTFLMAO!

I saw some of them critters once while on vacation.

Jeez, I can just ‘picture your post’!

    • LOL – I’d much rather have the bugs. They’re not have as annoying. But what a perfect analogy – Sarah and a Palmetto bug – it’s perfect. 🙂

    • diz says:

Aren’t palmetto bugs closely related to cockroaches? Yep, the comparison is apt.

      • mikefromiowa says:

In the evolutionary scale of critters, they are probably more closely related to ‘possums. From personal experience and vigorous applications of several laws of physics and a more than generous onslaught of one large ball peen hammer,Mr ‘Possum was a no show at breakfast the next morning.

        • beaglemom says:

They may also be related to moles which inhabit our front and back yards despite various (pretty much) humane attempts to send them packing. Some years they seem to move to our neighbor’s yard and then he does his thing to send them packing and they reappear, ever more invigorated, in our yard the next year. Well, it’s better than living in a high rise!

  20. MO Inkslinger says:

We should have used Sarah Palin as a bargaining chip. We could have given Sarah to the Italians for the freedom of Amanda Knox.

  21. Cassie Jeep says:

She walks a fine line between her supporters (deranged) and her quest for dollars.

I look for a half-hearted run from the half term governor.Anything for a few more bucks, right?

2012 = no Palin (Thank God!)

    • Stanley says:

I’d say you might be onto something,, Cassie. with $arah,, it’s all about the Benjamins and continjued exposure as some sort of voice of the fringe element who wants to be seen as a mover and shaker and potential king/queenmaker. But even the most deranged non-Democrat is probably not foolish enough to actual want a Palin candidacy. They remember how quickly she eighty-sixed her obligation to her Alaskan constituents when she quit after half a term — a portion of that spent out of state on the campaign trail with McCain. In fact if the media would do the sensible thing by ignoring anything she says that has no real value and offers no clarity or sensible alternatives on issues, Ms. Palin would fade ignominously into the woodwork — remembered only as the half-baked vice presidential candidate of John McCain who quit her elected post to do reality TV.

  22. David says:

Well I can think of nothing better than to have this woman run, this paragon of American Women Hood.
We can then elicit from She the Candidate to America her opinions on foreign affairs. See her calm demeanor while she tic’s off the accomplishments she made to better Alaska. All this while she gathers together her broken down, trod upon middle class business men and woman yearning to breathe free, while feeding from the trough of free enterprise; gorging on the tax breaks that she will support. While these heroes of the corporate world line their pockets with the fee’s that they foist upon We the people. Who like a flock of sheep follow along blindly, nose in butt unable to see the changes that We are allowing to take place. Not only are We being shorn, We are being fatted for the slaughter that will take place when We have seeded enough of our rights to these fine upstanding Americans who only have our best interests in mind. The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Just About Everything that Drips from her Ruby Red Lips and Down Her Chin. Hell and I don’t even live in Alaska…

  23. InOhio says:

To run 3rd party, she has to affiliate with a recognized 3rd party or create a new one. Liberaterians are the most widely registered 3rd party (probably in all states). They are a crazy bunch, I’ve attended meetings and they make the Teabaggers look (only slightly) sane by comparison. Basically add black helocopter and sky chem trails to tebaggers and you have the Liberaterian party in my area. But, I don’t think they are crazy enough to accept her as their candidate.

The next biggest party, the Green party, probably won’t take kindly to gunning down wildlife and the ‘drill baby drill’ mantra.

And it is probably too late to get a new 3rd party registered in all of the states (they have to have an actual presence of constituents)…

So that leaves the GOP. I don’t see her actually running. Not only will the FOX money stop, but the spigots will turn on and her precious money will be flowing the wrong way. I think she’s really hoping for a candidate to back so that she can use that as an excuse to not run. The candidates right now are horrible, but I don’t think a single one is dumb enough to try her as VP again. So as it is, she is truely stringing everyone along on the will-she or won’t-she trail, praying for an out that leaves her an ability for a next book deal.

    • slipstream says:

It’s kind of sad to think that none of the current GOP candidates are as dumb as John McCain.

      • benlomond2 says:

….don’t count on it..while they all said in a recent debate that the VP had to be qualified to step up as president…. they all agreed that everyone on the stage was qualified……

  24. WakeUpAmerica says:

Your video link isn’t working. Love your style and sense of humor.

    • Cortez says:

I’ve said the same thing for months. Except she will announce as an independent, not a repub. No pressure to win, she doesn’t have to debate anyone for a very long time, which gives her months of roaming the country, getting her stupid jabs in at the other candidates, and never has to answer for her idiotic rants. It brings in money, it keeps her fans, and she gets to keep the tiara.

    • I think PunditMom is on to something. And besides, if she actually decides to run won’t she have to give up that job with Faux? I really don’t think she’d do that unless she is pretty sure that she won’t win but as a 2012 candidate she could ask for even more money to tell people what she thinks – you know, that stuff she has been saying for the last three years.

  25. OmegaMom says:

Punditmom thinks she will run but doesn’t really want to *win*…so she can be in the spotlight some more.

  26. Sheesh says:

“I’d rather be doing this than in some stuffy old political office. I’d rather be out here being free.”
    Sarah Palin’s Alaska Oct 2010

    Just sayin’…

    Sheesh

    • Stanley says:

Didn’t she recently make some comment to the effect that she wasn’t sure she wanted to be “shackled” by the restraints imposed on the holder of the keys to the Oval Office? I’m sure I heard her contend that she prefers her “rogue” status and doesnt feel she’d be able to be as effective if she were the leader of the free world. I agree. Much better to have a nattering rogue with dollar signs and ego boosts in her eyes than to have to decipher her policy statements and misconceptions of the world during presidential debates.

  27. I See Villages From My House says:

Can she use her Political InAction Committee to promote her own POTUS ambitions? Isn’t she supposed to form an Exploratory Committee in order to be on the ‘verge’ or prompted by enough supporters to throw her Servant’s Heart unwillingly but by god hopelessly, into the ring?

How quickly can one form a Presidential Campaign Committee? And is she simply going to throw her PAC money all into her PCC? Can the erstwhile Alaska Fund Trust or whatever derivative survived ethics laws reimbursement/reinvestment go into this flight of fancy?

It’d be a hoot to see herself end up as financially unmoored as Bachmann or politically lame like Perry in just a few weeks in. She’s saved face by avoiding several public debates, but once she’s in. . .”In what respect Charlie” will rear its ugly, graceless and grappling head again.

    • tigerwine says:

“It’d be a hoot to see herself end up as financially unmoored as Bachmann or politically lame like Perry in just a few weeks in. She’s saved face by avoiding several public debates, but once she’s in. . .”In what respect Charlie” will rear its ugly, graceless and grappling head again.”

      Oh, if only!

  28. Priscilla says:

If the 2008 VP slot never made her blink an eye accepting….why in “God’s name” is this such a disgusting laborious metaphor?

  29. EatWildFish says:

Now Politico is making a Cain/Palin connection. (I thought I was reading the Onion).

Herman Cain is far too intelligent to pull a “John McShame” and link his candidacy with $arah, especially when 70% of the GOP don’t want her anywhere near the White House.

    • InOhio says:

Plus, his “no law longer than 3 pages” deal is 2.5 pages longer than her attention span!

    • Ned says:

Hopefully Cain is not a dumbass like McCain.

“Levi had also once asked what Sarah thought a Vice President does exactly: Take over–she had smiled–when the president dies. …..”
      http://theimmoralminority.blogspot.com/2011/10/levi-johnstons-book-deer-in-headlights.html

Let that be a warning to any GOP candidate who is even thinking about Sarah Palin as their vice president….. Sarah has already picked her curtains, rug, desk and wall paper for the oval office after she takes over for some mysterious reasons.

    • Well, I don’t want Cain anywhere near the White House either, but at least he is intelligent and speaks coherently. I really don’t think he’d have anything to do with Miss Verge Waiting to Happen.

Of course, maybe the GOP could recycle all those old signs and bumper stickers by covering up the Mc.

      • Baker's Dozen says:

A few brown sharpies to color in the picture. Or they could do Cain in white face, as was so popular with their Obama posters. That would make the followers feel better if they just thought he was wearing a Halloween costume.

  30. Sally says:

Since she is at heart a coward, I can’t see her running GOP, where she will HAVE to debate. If you thought Perry’s numbers dropped after one debate, imagine harpy Sarah, who has already criticized the entire field behind their backs. No, she will run 3rd party, and be trampled. Good for us.

    • Baker's Dozen says:

She’ll do what she always does when she wants her way–wear her push up bra. She’ll probably go with some on-the-downhill-side-mid-priced-call-girl make-up, as well.

      It’s worked before.

  31. psminidivapa says:

Seriously? Whilst the GOP is picking off candidates one at a time? The big GOP guys have all the dirt and will spread it liberally as soon as the next whackadoodle candidate has gotten to the top of the pack. Exit Pawlenty (would LOVE to know what they had on him). Exit (soon) Bachmann (only a matter of short time, since all of her staff is jumping ship). Exit (soon) Perry (too much dirt over last week to be coincidence). Cain really is “flavor of the day,” but only matter of time before his “scandals” are revealed. And Sarah wants to get in to this fray? When, I’m sure, there are very entertaining and enlightening stories that the big guys in the GOP are dying to reveal about her?

(I can’t wait until Santorum gets a day or two of media creds -although, that will never happen – he’s from my state, and there’s a lot of stuff that the PA mainstream GOP and media have on him. I’m sure THEY can’t wait for “under the bus” day.)

    Never pretty to witness cannibalism.

    • mikefromiowa says:

The fact that the GOP feasts on their own, often with a gusto usually reserved for Emperor Caligula’s post-gladiatorial orgies, helps explain .let’s say, certain peculiar RWNJ family values such as being anti-abortion in all cases,pro-life except when they are for the death penalty or heedless of mass civilian casualties in nutjob military excursions overseas and one of my all time favorites-strict constructionism as applied to the Constitution, which most apparently have never bothered to read.”If you cannot find a specific right in the first ten amendments to the constitution, that right does not exist” Rethugs may have all fallen down the rabbit hole.

  32. diz says:

She doesn’t want to be seen as stringing people along not that she minds actually doing just that. It’s the being ‘seen doing’ it that bothers her. More word salad in the blender. I think she was ready to say she would not run until all the books appeared. By refusing to run she probably fears that would substantiate what has been written and we all know how she feels about any semblance of the truth leaking out. Odds are that the Grand Old Puppeteers have an antidote for her candidacy and I doubt it will be as gentle and kind as Dunn, McGinniss and Bloomberg combined. (I hope, I hope)

  33. Leota2 says:

I suppose the race is on to watch Sarah pounce, loll and, or skitter about the place
like a bored, neglected, badly coifed lunatic. All I can say is it’s going
to be a hilarious winter if the Shrilla from Wasilla steps in the ring.

  34. AFM says:

All signs say she isn’t going to run, but this woman has no idea with honesty and integrity means. She’ll run just to make people more upset and show the hateful side of the tea party.

  35. PollyinAK says:

    Love the narrative and pictures!

  36. PollyinAK says:

If she decides to run, I’m going to miss all the fun. I am on an out-of-country vacation in November. Wonder if she is going to run GOP or third party?

    • Cassie Jeep says:

      We’ll keep you posted!

    • Baker's Dozen says:

The way they’re going, the GOP WILL be the third party.

Ah, just think if our two main political parties were the Greens playing left field, and the Democrats playing right field. Then, the Republicans could play left out.

I amend an earlier comment. They are a Ship of Drools.

  37. Elsie says:

    Well, rats, AKM, Hon …

Ya got me all excited there for a minute, talking about “drop dead” and Sarah Palin in the same title. I’m so disappointed to read that it was only about dates on the calendar.

    Darn.

    • merrycricket says:

Yeah! And if she were to drop dead, imagine aaaaalllllll the people who will finally come crawling our from their hiddy holes to tell the truth, on record, of the favorite flavor of koolaid the crazy lady liked to serve.

      • nDjinn says:

the conspiracy nuts would be all over it, that is her con-stitci-u-ants after all.

    • silverball says:

i’m with you, elsie…sure got my hopes up….lol
