BREAKING: Document Reveals Sullivan Misrepresented Escalating Port Cost

The Mudflats has obtained documents showing that Mayor Dan Sullivan is grossly misrepresenting the costs of completing the first phase of the controversial Port of Anchorage Expansion Project.

Anyone who has been following the costs associated with the project can hardly help but liken it to that old tongue-in-cheek definition of a boat – a hole in the water into which you pour money. The cost of the increasingly controversial project has more than tripled since 2005 estimates.

A draft of the Budgetary Cost Estimate Report for the Port of Anchorage Intermodal Expansion Project, jointly prepared by the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration and Integrated Concepts and Research Corporation (ICRC) shows budget projections for two port expansion scenarios.

Scenario 1 is a very modest, scaled-back version of the first phase of the project, and is estimated to cost $378 million – $28 million more than the $350 million figure the mayor has been using. Even then, this first phase would barely be adequate for the city’s needs, and many aspects of the project are not included in the estimate.

The document reveals that to actually complete the first phase of the port as originally designed would cost a whopping $707 million. Although the document was received by the City on Wednesday, Mayor Sullivan denied any knowledge of it.  Last night, during a debate  on KAKM public television, mayoral candidate Paul Honeman asked Sullivan a series of questions ending with, “how can our community believe anything you say?”  At that time, Sullivan denied ever having heard the $707 million figure, and said he had no idea where it came from.

Amid cries of gross mismanagement from irate citizens, state legislators, and Assemblyman Paul Honeman, Former Governor (and vocal Sullivan supporter) Bill Sheffield retired from his position as Port Director last month.

I don’t live in Anchorage, so I’m not able to vote in this election. I spend a lot of time here though as its’ “town” for me; I shop here, do a lot of work here, entertainment, etc. I think I am more aware of the issues on this election and know more about the people running for office than most of my Anchorage friends, and that is just plain sad.

  2. All I Saw says:

Anchorage will reelect him in a landslide, isn’t the city motto “we cheat the other guy and pass the savings onto you”?

  3. Ripley in CT says:

I wonder if his party planner will be responsible for the going away party…..hmm

Does he have no shame? Where is his sense of leading with traits that he’d like his children to have?

Isn’t this the same person who took almost $200,000 of the city’s money for a payout from his late father’s bogus insurance policy and cashed the check before anyone could question his actions?

** Oops! Daddy wasn’t legally entitled to the policy? So sorry, but the money’s already spent. Too bad, so sad, people of Anchorage! **

Shame? I guarantee he is not familiar with the concept.

Uh-oh. We’d better pay Dan Coffey another $60,000 on a no-bid contract to smooth this over.

  7. Elstun W. Lauesen says:

Just another in a long list of reasons to through Sullivan out of office!

    • Did you mean throw Sullivan out of office thoroughly? 🙂

      • juneaudream says:

Yessum LKB..that’s exactly what was meant..you just wait and see. I’ll bet my signed five dollar bill from dear Carmen Calvillo, my arrow point from the far area of Fort Rock and my deer skin beaded bag from a year before my birth..from dear Lakotas.

      • Writing from Alaska says:

Thoroughly through out all aspects of the office, throw him forthwith.
