Oyster Roundup! Volcanoes, Armed Mobs & Wine

oysters

~Thick and fast they came at last, and more, and more, and more!

Can You Hear Me NOW??

For all the fuss and upset that is happening about 3-D printers that could allow people to print guns off the internet, here is a happier use. The’ve printed a working bionic ear! I can’t decide if I’m going to want the brain upgrade.

Mind the Volcano!

In this land of fire and ice, there are new rumblings at the Cleveland volcano, in the Aleutian Islands. The color-coded terror alerts at the airport are a thing of the past, but not in the land of magma. We’re at Code Orange.

Oops!

Ah, yes. “Streamlining.” We’ve all heard the term. A new bill, designed to homogenize paperwork and carried through the legislature by Rep. Mike Hawker (R-Anc) requires law enforcement officers  to personally serve citations. Problem is, they forgot about one little thing – parking tickets. In Juneau, the court system has decided it will no longer deal with cases of a parking citation left under someone’s windshield wiper.

Juneau is among the cities that let the courts handle parking ticket appeals. The court system, in an order that took effect April 15, said it will no longer deal with cases where an officer stuck a ticket under someone’s windshield wiper.

Robin Koutchak, the city attorney for Sitka, called the situation one of “those bureaucratic nightmare sort of things.”

Armed Mob Marches on Washington

An angry mob of 10,000 people with loaded rifles storming the nation’s capital and surrounding the White House. What could go wrong?

If it’s any consolation, this has been attempted many times in the past, and at the last minute the angry mob decides they’d rather not become felons, and have to give up their right to bear arms. Go figure.

Here are a few words from the organizer’s Facebok page:

On the morning of July 4, 2013, Independence Day, we will muster at the National Cemetery & at noon we will step off to march across the Memorial Bridge, down Independence Avenue, around the Capitol, the Supreme Court, & the White House, then peacefully return to Virginia across the Memorial Bridge. This is an act of civil disobedience, not a permitted event. We will march with rifles loaded & slung across our backs to put the government on notice that we will not be intimidated & cower in submission to tyranny. We are marching to mark the high water mark of government & to turn the tide. This will be a non-violent event, unless the government chooses to make it violent. Should we meet physical resistance, we will peacefully turn back, having shown that free people are not welcome in Washington, & returning with the resolve that the politicians, bureaucrats, & enforcers of the federal government will not be welcome in the land of the free.

Archaeological Vintner Discovers Bulk Wine Distribution Center

The inspiration for cheap boxed wine and the Fruit of the Loom mascot may have been discovered in Pompeii.

We are awash in evidence that the Romans had a hearty wine culture. (At one Pompeii site, Bacchus is depicted as a grape cluster “sort of like the Fruit of the Loom commercials where the guy is dressed as a grape” with Vesuvius in the background.) But if Oplontis B functions as the team thinks it does, it would be the first distribution center of its kind discovered. And perhaps proof that even humble bulk wine has pedigree after all.

Some Like it Hot

For those of you who are on the fence about whether you’d like to be a monthly sustaining donor to the Mark Begich for Senate campaign, they’ve just sweetened the pot. Seems they’ve located 500 hot pads left over from the 2008 campaign, and you can have one if you sign up. It’s basically like finding a rare case of wine in some old tavern basement, or a Van Gogh in the attic of a Dutch farm house. This doesn’t happen every day.

Hotpad

But when they’re gone, they’re gone forever — so act fast. Click here to become a sustaining supporter and help us keep our momentum going strong!

What a great OR! One by one:

I love, respect, and care for my natural body, and 3D printing couldn’t make me any taller. However, I find the prospect of bionic ears for deaf people thrilling!

Maybe the Cleveland volcano is grumbling out of concern that people will confuse it with Cleveland, OH, where three young women who were kidnapped as teenagers and held prisoner by three brothers since, have been recovered from their ordeal.

Legislation has consequences, some unforeseen. Beware and be vigilant.

I will NOT be going to DC to celebrate the fourth.

The more we know about how the ancients lived, the more we find examples to follow, and to ignore.

The last link didn’t work, but if your choice is between Begich and a run-of-the-mill RWNJ, I fear for both Alaska and the Senate.

High schoolers in Georgia wanted an integrated prom instead of seperate proms for Blacks and Whites. So the rethuglican gov accused the students of being a front for Dems. Damn them free thinking students to HELL!!!

Well- this kind of horsepunky irritates the daylights out of me.
It is the worse kind of MSU.
Just make up a conclusion about why one might meet physical resistance, just pull a conclusion out of thin air. No engaging in conversation, no admitting other POVs even exist, no nothing, just declare that
” having shown that free people are not welcome in Washington” is the ONLY possible conclusion from any kind of resistance to what you do.
    Well, Pfffftt!
Throw around the land of the free , tyranny of the government crap and presto ! you don’t have to think!
    Buncha doofs.

…AND SC voters demonstrate why the Nation’s Congress is so f@#ked up… by electing an adulterer who left his post as Govenor to be with his Mistress in Argentina, and on the Taxpayer’s dime.. and ignored a court issued restraining order by entering his ex-wife’s house…. guess it’s alright because Jesus forgave him… ( gee, can I see the note from Jesus that says that?) If I hear one more Republican talk about trimming goverment waste and Family values, I just might have to excercise my 2nd amendment right…. OY VAY!!

    • COalmostNative says:

Sanford thinks Jesus forgives him- but he has a court date Thursday on the trespassing charges. Let’s see if the law is as forgiving…

    • mike from iowa says:

Conor Friedersdorf wrote a column for the Atlantic on May 2nd? titled,”Why the Right thinks the Left is Morally Squishy.” Unfortunately I can’t seem to get the URL to download here. I will keep trying. It is an interesting read.

    • Beaglemom says:

Sanford should have ended up in prison. He stole state money to travel to visit his girlfriend in Argentina. God, Republicans and Southerners are stupid. It makes me furious that this jerk is going to be voting on legislation that affects our lives. Let him be in the South Carolina legislature – who cares – but he should have been kept away from Washington.

      • John says:

Unfortunately, the south doesn’t have a monopoly on stupid, sadi he who once thought Sarah Palin might be a good alternative to Murkowski.

Delaware recently became the 11th state to legalize same sex marriage. Minnesota has more than enough Dem votes to pass a similar bill and a Dem Guv. who is willing to sign it. No rethugs in Minnesota voted for same sex marriage. In iowa, convicted sex offenders have had no trouble getting permits to carry guns, although it is raising eyebrows with law enforcement people. In Philadelphia,an anti-abortion group was able to secretly videotape a cash-only abortion mill who used untrained, unqualified help to perform late term abortions, yet in iowa and several other states you can be arrested for videotaping in animal confinements with the purpose of exposing animal cruelty and filthy, diseased animals. RW seem to have priorities straight, protect unborn fetuses at all costs and allow the rest of humanity an equal chance of dying by salmonella or listeria, etc. Which salmon (wild and fresh) is hands down the yummiest to scarf down?

    • Alaska Pi says:

      Which Salmon?
      Is VERY much personal taste.
I like Coho best but King (Chinook) and Sockeye come in right behind , just a smidge behind.
      Just a nano smidge.
      Others feel very differently.
Humpys and Dog salmon are much milder flavorwise than the other 3.

  6. LA Brian says:

Gosh that Pompeii tidbit makes me yearn for the civilized manner with which the Italians proffer the vino at lunch — “and would you like the 250ml or 500ml carafe?”

Mind you, I was traveling/dining alone … with no scheduling obligations … and no sense of judgment from my fellow diners …

    • John says:

I recommend the 250 ml at lunch, because then you don’t feel decadent when you get your mid-afternoon glass.

  7. AKMagpie says:

I am finding it difficult to whip up any enthusiasm for Begich this time around after his cowardly decision not to vote in favor of the background checks for gun purchases. I also want to see him support keeping the Pebble mine out, and other ecosystem destroying projects also. I will probably vote for him as the least worst of candidates. Yes, implementing a background check would have logistic issues here and certainly doesn’t guarantee no one will ever misuse a firearm, but it is a reasonable step in that direction.

A ban on assault-style weapons would be good. What, our hunters need to point to a flying goose V formation and take out an entire flock at once? Lead poisoned and pre-shredded goose is not fun to prepare, cook or eat.

    • Beaglemom says:

Well, put it in a larger perspective. If we lose a Democratic senator (even a wishy-washy one) we could have a Republican-led Senate as well as House in Washington. Then things will definitely become worse. President Obama deserves a Democratic Congress and so do “we the people.” If there is a Democratic alternative to Begich who can WIN, then support that person, but otherwise, we’re all better off with a wishy-washy Democrat than with a Republican. Remember the controlling party controls the committees.
