March Against Monsanto

602059_10101429471709133_1737559954_n

Monsanto shouldn’t be immune from the U.S. justice system. That’s why I’m co-sponsoring legislation to eliminate the Monsanto rider. The Monsanto rider stripped the courts of their power to halt the planting of genetically modified crops that could be dangerous to people or the environment. I will keep working on this issue because genetically modified crops can be just as dangerous as genetically modified fish. I’ve always opposed Frankenfish—and I oppose special legal exemptions for Frankenfruit companies too.  ~Senator Mark Begich, D-AK

Anchorage will be making history when we participate in the first ever global March Against Monsanto! Join over 180 other cities worldwide demonstrating the same day to stop GMOs on Saturday, May 25, 2013. This is a peaceful, family and community-oriented march with an event taking place afterward to educate each other and others about GMOs and the issues we are facing here locally (such as the GMO salmon aka “Frankenfish”) as well as nationally and globally. Informational handouts will be available at the event as well as various activities for the kids including eco-fun crafts and a planting station!

SATURDAY, MAY 25, 10AM on The Delaney Park Strip at West 9th, and L St., across from Benihana/Clarion Suites.

The march will loop through downtown, passing the Downtown Saturday Market and end where we started.

FOLLOWING THE MARCH: the March Against Monsanto rally will continue with fun activities for the kids including eco-fun crafts and a “planting station” where they can plant their own non-GMO heirloom seeds to take home and grow. Various organizations will also be on hand to provide information about GMOs, their effects and how you can make simple changes to avoid them. Informational handouts and brochures will be distributed before, during and after the march. As will free bumper stickers (while supplies last) and t-shirts (for sale, while supplies last – you can pre-order your shirt to guarantee you get the size and design you want – see the SHIRT thread below for info). There will also be opportunities to sign up for future event notifications.

***DETAILED ROUTE WILL BE POSTED SOON***

VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are still needed for various tasks including, but not limited to: help with the kids activities, filming/still photography, help crowd along the march, donation of bullhorns, walkie talkies during the event, general help during pre-march rally, during the march and at the post-march rally/event.

FLYERS: A flyer template is available on this event page. Please feel free to post on your personal FB page, email, share with other, print on your own and hand out, hang up around town. Thank you to everyone who helps get the word out on this grassroots event!

BUMPER STICKERS: Leftover bumper stickers after shirt pre-orders will also be available for FREE at the event on a first come, first serve basis.

  1. Yola also feautres a drag and drop website builder that will allow you to quickly and easily build a
website. Apart from all those above mentioned factors there are innumerable reasons why one should opt for a professional website for ones institution.
Finding an excess of Flash on a website homepage makes us cringe.

I think we should also work on requiring that all GMO foods be labeled clearly. I do not think people would buy them in the quantities needed to make them as profitable. I would be more impressed if Begich introduced legislation requiring honesty in labeling, that would give consumers real protection. Preventing or restricting planting is one thing, because if there is a market, the corporation will find a way to flood it. If the market is diminished by truth in labeling, the need to produce those poison foods is also diminished.

According to information I could dig up, this has been the approach used in Europe, and has had success.

Now, do you have any idea why my comment had a ghost in it? 🙂
I always wonder whether we really have more doofs per capita than other places or whether it is easier to smoke em out with a small population where it is likely someone will know someone who knows something about someone .

Best wishes for the March against Monsanto today!

        • mike from iowa says:

With a smaller population it has to be easier for rwnj to baffle the populace with B.S. than to dazzle them with brilliance. S Snookie and her word salad and dumbass dubya are excellent examples. Having Beth and Pi watching my back,I feel like I could take on Darth Vader and his light saber with a penlight. Fair warning ladies, mike from iowa loves corn bread and brown bean soup.

    This is the section :
Sec. 735. In the event that a determination of non-regulated status made pursuant to section 411 of the Plant Protection Act is or has been invalidated or vacated, the Secretary of Agriculture shall, notwithstanding any other provision of law, upon request by a farmer, grower, farm operator, or producer, immediately grant temporary permit(s) or temporary deregulation in part, subject to necessary and appropriate conditions consistent with section 411(a) or 412(c) of the Plant Protection Act, which interim conditions shall authorize the movement, introduction, continued cultivation, commercialization and other specifically enumerated activities and requirements, including measures designed to mitigate or minimize potential adverse environmental effects, if any, relevant to the Secretary’s evaluation of the petition for non-regulated status, while ensuring that growers or other users are able to move, plant, cultivate, introduce into commerce and carry out other authorized activities in a timely manner: Provided, That all such conditions shall be applicable only for the interim period necessary for the Secretary to complete any required analyses or consultations related to the petition for non-regulated status: Provided further, That nothing in this section shall be construed as limiting the Secretary’s authority under section 411, 412 and 414 of the Plant Protection Act.

The focus of this community march is very, very important to all of us who live in a free and democratic country and oh, BTW, eat. The very concept that any legislator could slip this into a significant piece of legislation (“The Monsanto rider stripped the courts of their power to halt the planting of genetically modified crops that could be dangerous to people or the environment.”) is simply unconscionable.

And now the US Congress is considering the latest Farm Bill. This behavior by ‘representatives’ elected by us to act independent of our best interests, but so blatantly in the interest of AgriBusiness must stop.

    Just sayin’. n
