Day of Decision – Anchorage, Alaska

Celebrations of the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act sprang up across the country yesterday, and Anchorage joined in. A happy and boisterous group gathered in front of the Federal Courthouse downtown to hug, and wave flags, and be present with each other.

Despite Alaska’s dubious honor of being the first state to discriminate against marriage for all people in its Constitution, the LGBT community and its allies are strong and committed to equality for all.

Christians for Equality had a large banner, and there were rainbow flags everywhere. I was struck by how many honks and waves the crowd got – a large amount from semi trucks, taxi cabs, and Muni workers. Many who didn’t honk, waved or smiled in appreciation as they drove by.

Pictures below are by Zach Roberts (watermarked) and Jeanne Devon.

Equal Rights and Nordstroms. This is something I can support!

Hear tell there is a male Jaguar roaming the mountains of Southern Arizona. Any chance you will ever see it(from a safe distance,of course)?

      • mag the mick says:

Yes indeed. We get the occasional jaguar prowling around our “sky island” mountains here. Biologically, we are on the very northern fringe of the range for Meso-American fauna. We also get the occasional ocelot, trogon (splendid birds from the Yucatan and Central America) and lots of other cool stuff. I sincerely hope this big kitty stays out of everyone’s view for many years to come. They tend to get killed when people see them.

Zach and Jeanne, you really do have a way to capture important moments in time. Thanks.

That said, Anchorage got a Nordstrom before NYC? Ours won’t be built till 2015 or so; we only have Nordstrom Rack at Union Square.

    Progress!!

The sun shines so much brighter when correct decisions are made and implemented for “everyone”

Those are great pictures. But alas, Alaska has a long way to go. I hope a few partners will sue the State to allow them to me married there. It’s a great start for everyone. Yay for equal rights.
