Governor’s Picnic (PHOTOS)

It was a gorgeous day in Anchorage – a perfect day for the Governor’s Picnic.

Tiny people climbing a giant rock wall at the National Guard station.

gp3

Fish & Game on bear safety, and other wildlife issues.

gp4

All five species of salmon were available to ID. I learned much.

gp5

All of them are slimy.

gp6

You can use your fingers to remember what they are. Pinky = pink, Ring finger = silver, Longest finger = King, Index finger somehow relates to reds… and Thumb = chum.

See the pupil difference?

See the pupil difference? It must be a silver salmon.

gp7

There was a great turnout. Blue sky, 60 degrees, sunshine, and food!

Fire Department dalmatian shaking hands with the legalize marijuana petition guy.

gp11

This is why I smelled like a hamburger for the rest of the day.

gp12

gp14

I don’t know what this is. But it is happy.

gp15

The governor serving food. He’s about as charismatic as he looks.

They had a conversation which Parnell didn’t seem too pleased about.

gp16

All sorts of Alaska critters were available for painting.

gp17

gp19

Trooper chopper.

gp20

This is the actual “well-regulated militia” we hear so much about.

gp21

A great way for siblings to beat the crap out of each other while mom cheers them on.

She’s the goalie of the hockey playing pair.

gp23

The FBI teaches an interested onlooker about the shapes of fingerprints. Better fly right, kid.

gp25

This gentleman let picnickers put on FBI swat team gear for photo ops.

gp26

The vest weighed about the same as my backpack with camera gear.

I believe a visit to zero’s picinic is worth an excurtion. This be my “day off”. I shall bear my banner well.

  2. mike from iowa says:

Speaking of militias, here are some of the words of wisdom Thomas Jefferson did and did not say about guns:

    http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2013/07/us/jefferson-rorschach-guns/?hpt=hp_c4

Since gun owners love to “quote” Jefferson, let’s put HIS words in context.

  3. Question?? Why does the Governor have state agencies representing at HIS Picnic?? Is he a state Governor or a Fedral Governor?

    • mike from iowa says:

Parnell is a bought and paid for korporate shill who has a lifetime job awaiting him when he gets done raping Alaska’s treasures and treasury, imho.

    • NickDanger says:

So, what is a Federal governor? Sheesh. In case you weren’t aware, Parnell is governor of Alaska, that makes him a state governor–if it wasn’t obvious–hence the state agencies. Moron.

      • Well there probably isnt a real title as a “Federal Governor” – however, there is such a thing called the Govenor’s Council which push Federal Agenda… and Govenor’s who accept federal bribes in the name of “grants” or “subsidies” and in return give up “states rights” or “claims” or worse allow the federal over reach into their states citizen’s lives.. well thats what i consider a “Federal Governor”

P.S. The FBI is not a state Agency.. And I’ll reluctantly refrain from name calling.

  4. Well “Regulated” Militia is right.. regulated to the point of disarmament with no mission.. Maybe you should do a story highlighting the Governor’s inept handling of the ASDF and why so many of its members have left it and are joining the state’s “Unregulated” citizen militias.

Great pictures…one question: where is Sarah Palin. She loves Alaska…right? She’s always going on and on about Alaska this and that. You would think that she would want to be there to celebrate her state with all her great Alaskan friends. Doesn’t she want to get credit for all the great stuff she’s done to “progress” the state since resigning as governor? Surely she wants to bask in the glory of Alaskans love for her. And now she’s teasing about at Senate run…to represent all the wonderful people in the photos. Don’t tell me she’s holed up in her Wasilla compound. Or perhaps she’s in the lower 48 or doing her commercial fishing shtick elsewhere in the great state of Alaska. Where in the world is Palin?

  6. AKblue says:

Jeanne, were you tempted to run over to the gov and arrest him for giving away state money to the oil companies?

  7. Zyxomma says:

“This is the actual “well-regulated militia” we hear so much about.” 😉 Jeanne, I saw you sport that look on FB and wondered what the story was — now I know. Corporal Zero looked miserable!

  8. thatcrowwoman says:

So some days life really is a picnic
with lots of family fun in the sun.
    Nice.

It’s rained all summer here at the western gate to “the sunshine state.”
Angels crying for Trayvon, Grandma Shorty would say.
May the memories of them both be for a blessing.

  9. Alaska Pi says:

Dang. That hat is you, AKM!
An utterly modern marriage of the cloche and bucket classics, with detail and color that sets off your hair and skin tones to lovely advantage 🙂

And I agree with AlaskacodPiece. Pffft! No salmon?! No alaskan salmon?!
    Pffft!

  10. beth. says:

    An Aside:
Umm, the Alaska State Defense Force has the national flag displayed incorrectly. The union (blue star field) should be to the flag’s own right…AKA: to the observer’s left. They’ve got it hung backwards…the blue should be on the left. Improper flag display has always been a pet peeve of mine. That and the misuse of “half staff” and “half mast” when talking about the flag’s position on a flag pole — the two terms are not interchangeable (it is at “half mast” ONLY on a ship; if it’s not on a ship, it’s at “half staff’). beth.

How to Display the Flag: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/more/displayonly.htm

    • aussiebluesky says:

This is the State where Sarah Palin as a candidate for Governor draped the flag over herself and later as Governor draped herself over the flag in a tawdry cheesecake photo session that may have left Alaskans unable to look at Old Glory long enough to know if they’re breaching protocol.

  11. AlaskaCodPiece says:

Too bad the gov didn’t serve up some Alaska salmon burgers. Nope, he opts for mass-made tube steaks and mystery meat. Pffffftttt!!

  12. benlomond2 says:

Green is DEFINITELY Jeanne’s color !!! chortle…paraphrasing from the movie “The Santa Clause”… a Leprechaun with attitude… 🙂

  13. John says:

I don’t remember prior governors having security people standing guard behind them at these picnics.

  14. mike from iowa says:

G I Jeanne looks cool in green. When you said you smell like hamburgers, were we speaking metaphorically or do they rilly have beef so far away from civilization? Looks like a fun time. Send me a burger,I have the perfect onions for one. Just send it ICO iowa and I will get it.You are better paid.
