Isn’t There an Ice Floe Somewhere That Needs a Homophobic Preacher?

wishyouwerehere1

If there is such an ice floe, I know plenty of people who would gladly escort Jerry Prevo on to it, and ceremoniously shove him off the shore with their foot to a destination far far away…or perhaps to no destination at all.   Prevo, of the Anchorage Baptist Temple has been a notorious opponent of civil rights for the LGBT community in the past, and he shows no signs whatsoever of intellectual or moral evolution.  He does, however, continue to throw stones, embrace divisiveness, and can now take credit for this:

sos

sos2

Is this a joke?  It looks like one, but alas, no.  There’s even a nice link to donate money.  So, while thoughts of men in dresses invading the public bathrooms frequented by your wives and daughters dance through your head; or you are kept awake at night by images of being forced to hire a sales team of gender non-specific humans who run you out of business …there is hope.  You can click that link and make a deposit right into the coffers of the Anchorage Baptist Temple.  Only your money will keep the city safe from THEM. You know…..(whispers) the ho-mo-sexuals!  The price of safety can be paid right from your bank account to God’s open hand via Paypal.

I would like to believe that the majority of people in my city are better than this.  I would like to believe that most Anchorage residents allow their lives to be guided by something greater than fear.  I wish it were true that someone claiming to speak for Jesus wasn’t using his considerable influence to make people dislike each other, and judge each other, and fear each other.  Who Would Jesus Fire?  To whom would he deny housing?

Of course one of the things that Prevo forgets to tell you is that there is already a ban on discrimination for sexual orientation in public sector employment in Alaska.  Another thing they don’t tell you is that currently twenty states, the District of Columbia, and more than 140 counties and cities have legislation on the books banning discrimination based on sexual orientation.  Those states include such hot-beds of liberal decadence and mortal sin as Iowa, Indiana, Colorado, and Wisconsin (which was the first state to ban discrimination of this kind in 1982).

Prevo sent out an 8 page bulk fax on May 15, which began “Dear Community Leader.”  It went on in some detail to describe what “sexual orientation” really means, and how adopting it as part of a non-discrimination policy would mean the downfall of life as we know it in business, church life, restroom usage, charitable organizations, and schools.  Yes, schools.  Even our children will not be safe from guys in pumps and women using the men’s room.  The fax even asks the panicked question, in bold and all caps:

“WHAT WILL ADDING “SEXUAL ORIENTATION” DO TO THE ANCHORAGE SCHOOL BOARD’S ABILITY TO HAVE SOME STANDARDS OF CONDUCT AND DRESS OF TEACHERS AND STUDENTS?????”

Five question marks?  They must really want to know the answer to this one.  As a matter of fact, this question has caused many fearful Prevo followers to contact members of the school board and school district to demand some answers. Want to know how this ordinance will affect our kids?  Here’s part of the Anchorage School Board Update dated May 28, from Board member Jeff Friedman. (Emphasis is mine)

School Board Update May 28, 2009

The Municipal Assembly is considering a change to the Equal Rights ordinance to include sexual orientation as a protected class.  Whether it should adopt that change is a policy question for the Assembly to decide.  I am writing about this only because some people have raised a concern that this proposed change would have a large impact on the School District.  In my opinion, it would have no impact at all.  Eight years ago, the School Board added “sexual orientation” to its harassment/non-discrimination policy.  Board Policy 114 (c).  Since we already have this policy in place, people do not need to be concerned about how the Assembly’s action might impact the school district.

Yes, this anti-discrimination policy has already been in place in the school district for eight years.  So, is it possible that Mr. Prevo didn’t know this?  Unlikely.  But whether he knew or didn’t know is irrelevant, because Mr. Prevo is not in the business of peddling facts.  He is in the business of peddling fear.  Unfortunately,  people seem to want what he has to sell, and they are literally paying him for it.  The more frightened they are, the more money he makes.

What about Prevo’s and others’ religious beliefs?

Jeffrey Mittman, executive director of the ACLU of Alaska, helped write the proposal. He said it contains a provision that allows organizations such as the Baptist Temple to legally refuse to hire people because their sexual preference conflicts with religious beliefs.

“It’s unfortunate when organizations want to muddy the water and misrepresent what an actual ordinance does or says,” Mittman said. “People should go to the ordinance themselves and read it.”

The Anchorage Assembly is holding a public hearing to discuss this issue on June 9.  So far, Assembly members have heard more from those who are afraid than those who are not.  Fear is a good motivator.  It’s one of the best.  My hope is that love can be a better motivator.  And if not love, then social justice.  And if not that, then a sense of fair play.  Or the desire that this community not be run roughshod over by people who think it’s OK to discriminate against their fellow human beings in the name of God.

This is not an issue of men wearing heels.   This is a civil rights issue, and those who seek to defeat it are doing so at the expense of a healthy community that protects all of its citizens.  Don’t let them.

    What Trisha said.

The Mormons poured a fortune into defeating the Equal Rights Amendment, and just lately Proposition 8 in California. They are absolutely sure that if women and the gay people have the same rights as straight (white) men, anarchy will reign and things so horrible they can only be hinted at will happen.

I received one of their anti-ERA postcards years ago, it contained nothing of substance, but was all about how ERA was contrary to the Will of God and The Brethren. Pompous asshats.

Austintx, as a fallen away and returned catholic who is probably going to h-e-double hockey sticks anyway because I don’t follow the church’s teachings to the letter, the link to the Minnesota diocese does not surprise me. After Bishops refusing to give communion to pro-choice catholic politicians and brou ha ha over Obama speaking at Notre Dame, I can’t say anything does anymore. But a few years ago, I was at Christmas mass and the priest was given his homily about what would happen if Jesus would born now. He would not be hanging out with the modern day pharisees but would be ministering to the modern day lepers and tax collecters and he would do so without judgement but with lover. He was not calling gays and others lepers per se, he was comparing the way society then and now treated those who were different from them. The catholic church is not William Donahue of the Catholic League of the Five catholic justices on the Supreme Court who are all conservative like Mel Gibson, but unfortunately, they are the ones who get the press.

Maybe someone from the LGBT movement should challenge Prevo to a scientific evaluation of his sexuality (like KO withHannity re waterboarding – still no reply from lil chicken).

Hook him up to monitor his reactions to gay/hetero erotica, now wouldn’t that be interesting – bet he would be about as keen as Hannity was to get ‘sprinkled’ with water.

This reminds me of the lies that were spread (mostly by the mormon church efforts) back in the day about what would happen if the Equal Rights Amendment passed.

I remember the claims that there would not longer be separate men’s and women’s restrooms, and you would have to share a hospital room with a member of the opposite sex, etc.

It’s also interesting that the mormon’s are so involved in this
For a group that still complains about how they were discriminated against sure likes to practice discrimination against women and gays.

  12. The visual

Wow, the kids might actually pay attention if the teacher “crossdresses”. Of course only if it is a man. Wasn´t there a law against women dressing up as men, long ago….? Aren´t we glad that is over?

  13. samper says:

Grabbed the following off the Boy Scout page of the sosachorage site:

People who engage in homosexual behavior have the same BASIC rights as other citizens, but should not be given SPECIAL RIGHTS that create so many unnecessary problems for others.

Umm… Isn’t the “right” to marry whomever one wants a “BASIC” right?

Isn’t the “right” to dress however one wants a “BASIC” right? (Again, I dressed like a BOY today and not one head turned!! I suppose entering Home Depot in a ball gown would have caused distraction, though.)

Isn’t the “right” to be hired/fired based on ability (and not who one’s “significant other” is) a “BASIC” right?

  14. samper says:

Why is this guy so hung up on who has sex with whom and how they dress?

Greg was over today… he was wearing a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers.

Surprisingly, I was NOT wearing a ball gown, as one would believe appropriate for a woman. I was wearing a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers.

Does that mean I had the uncontrollable desire to stroll into the Men’s room at the Home Depot today instead of hitting the plumbing dept. with Greg? NOPE! And yet, I was dressed JUST LIKE A MAN! GASP! (BTW: You all will be thrilled to know the kitchen plumbing is back to functional! Wahoo!)

It’s an unending fundie obsession with sex and abortion. It’s all they talk about!

Don’t like abortion? Fine, don’t have one. And it’s none of your business if *I* have one. It doesn’t concern you in the least.

You’re a guy and want to wear a dress? Have at it, but don’t look better than me in it! 🙂

Your a woman and don’t like “Beard Burn”? Then start kissing other women who won’t irritate your chin!

For folks to be so concerned about what other folks are doing is ridiculous (as long as it’s legal, of course). It has NOTHING to do with them, their lives, the “value” of their own marriage, how they raise their kids, etc.

I have gay friends who don’t think about sex NEARLY as much as the fundies do. In fact, my straight friends don’t think about it as much, either.

Why do they CONSTANTLY think about sex and how what someone ELSE does in their own bedroom/doctor’s office is going to affect them????

Maybe the good rev isn’t “gettin'” any.

  16. bucfan says:

Prevo, Eddie Burke and other gay bashers, whether they be ones who attack gays physically or just over the air waves seem to be poster children of the psychological theory of projection bias. It is a defense mechanism where you take everything that you hate about yourself and project it onto others. The same thing that some of you have cited earlier. For example, Larry Craig, The right reverend Haggard, the anti gay gay mayor of Spokane a few years back, Jim West. (You know I kinda wondered about Jim West, spending all that time alone on a train with Artemis Gordon). And if you researched it, you would find many one time anti gay advocates, from the national to the local level, who have stopped advocating because they got caught doing the very thing that they abhor. The question is like this, who would be easier to blackmail to get secrets, an openly gay member of the military, or a closeted gay member of the Congress. Okay, let me stop channeling Larry King and stop my rambling.

Jerry Prevo is a repressed homo, plain and simple. The jerk should do himself a favor and bust that closet door wide open and then the rest of us can live in peace, regardless of our sexual orientations, without having to listen to the likes of him.

  22. Closet Mudpup says:

The ethics of the self-righteous fundies are appalling. It seems none of them owns a Bible that includes an admonishment against ‘bearing false witness.’

Their justification for their crusade against The Gay comes from the same book (Deuteronomy I think) that would have them stoning all kinds of people to death, including their own children, everyone they see working on their sabbath, and a host of others as I recall. They can ignore all the other morally offensive mandates therein, yet still they persist in their morally offensive crusade against The Gay while claiming they’re defending morality. Is it any wonder their ranks are shrinking? Or that I would prefer my neighbors have The Gay than be fundies?

The fundies do provide some pretty good humor at times, though. Like their ridiculous view of sexual orientation that leads them to believe that someone with The Gay can attend a seminar and leave with The Opposite. They don’t seem to recognize that built into that nonsensical switcheroo is the implication that those with The Opposite are just one seminar away from having The Gay. (And what happens if you only attend half the seminar – do you leave with The Both or The Neither?!?)

    http://www.petertatchell.net/homophobia/bigots%20are%20buggers.htm

Research by US psychologists suggests that 80 percent of men who are homophobic have secret homosexual feelings. This finding lends scientific support to the long-standing speculation that those who shout the loudest against homosexuality have something to hide

I think there is a good deal to what you say. Male society puts so much emphasis on the comic book stereotype of masculinity. Real humans have so many fears, doubts and insecurities, that that dichotomy does often seem to come out as a hatred of male weaknesses as embodied by gay men..
Again it is a comic book stereo type that gay men are effeminate, and gay women are are masculine, but since the anger is based of fear, the reaction is not looked at logically.

And of course there is a convenient “whipping boy” already and waiting to hate an bad mouth so one’s manhood can be momentarily boosted.

It is interesting that women do not seem to have anything like the fear and antipathy toward gay women as men do toward presumed gay men, so the “guy thing” probably is a big part of that difference.

Funny, shouldn’t it read, “covers the often undesirable but necessary skills of forgiveness and conflict resolution except with anyone who is different from us in any way, especially in matters of sexuality.” ?

There is an interesting phenomenon that takes place as a form of neurosis in some repressed homosexuals. It takes place in the form of hateful, homophobic actions toward openly gay individuals by repressed homosexuals. For the repressed homosexual, acting violently toward gays and gay behavior helps maintain their moral universe and false identity. (Freedman, 57) Hateful actions can also serve to relieve the dissonance that is experienced by a repressed homosexual who is religious. The religious heterosexual who is devoted to the organized church is supposed to be adamantly against homosexuality and act as a protector of society. An enormous amount of dissonance is experienced with this contradiction and a neurosis can take place involving violent, homophobic actions against open homosexuals (Churchill
