Open Thread – Brian on the Town

The long holiday weekend is almost over, and it’s been nice taking a little break from the usual political grind.  Even Brian likes to kick back once in a while and enjoy a little levity, and fellowship.  He got invited to a fun shindig at the home of fellow blogger and progressive radio stalwart Shannyn Moore.  Never one to turn down an invitation, he had a grand time mingling with the guests.

Here are some shots of Brian and his friends, starting with the hostess for the evening, fellow blogger and host of the Shannyn Moore Show on KBYR.

And yes, Brian even got to meet Thom Hartmann!  Host of his own successful national political talk radio show, Thom and his lovely hard-working wife and producer Louise were in town for the weekend.  Brian had great fun rubbing elbows with them and talking about the radio biz, all things Sarah Palin, the Alaska constitution, the Kennedy assassination, and global warming.  I think Thom took a shine to Brian.

Brian even got to thank Senator Bill Weielechowski for toughing it out in Juneau this session, and for being at the front of the organizational effort for a ceremony last week to honor Alaska’s veterans who have fallen in combat.

Veteran Alaska broadcaster Steve Heimel and his wife Johanna Eurich were there too, and Steve allowed Brian to stand “in the thicket” as he called it, for a portrait.

Brian never met a progressive blogger he didn’t like, and Phil Munger is no exception. Phil, the featured Alaska blogger in the new book Bloggers on the Bus, and host of Progressive Alaska shared a moment with the famed ungulate.

But Brian’s most memorable moment came when he, Thom Hartmann and one of the original Alaska Constitutional delegates, Vic Fisher, chatted about the amazing document that is the Alaska constitution. Here they are, with Thom’s new copy signed by Vic himself.

And what better way to top off an evening of lively political discourse than with a nice shiraz and a few cream puffs?

Brian had such a great time at this little shindig, he’s planning on socializing in the future, and will feature photos of himself with his political friends on a new page on the blog.  Just look for the tab that says “Brian’s Hall of Fame.”

Thanks to Shannyn and Kelly for bringing together such a great group of people.

Nan, right you are. Somber events require more somber attire. There’s a link to Shannyn Moore’s post on the new thread, which has a pic of the gov in mini skirt w/ strappy sandals at a memorial event recognizing the families of the fallen. Shannyn uses the word “cheap.” I’ll go for “tacky.”

  2. alienears says:

Hey all you ‘trolls’ out there! Come on over to the light side! Doesn’t this crowd look like they know how to have a good time?!

  3. Nan says:

I think I have less problem with the monkey shoes on the campaign trail than these nothing-but-strap sandal looking shoes at what is essentially a memorial service. On the campaign trail, a little “attitude” is expected and even looked for. But something more somber would have been (a lot) more appropriate for the Memorial Day ceremony.

  4. ValleyIndependent says:

Okay, this is catty, I know. Today I blasted the nuts4nitwits for picking on Diva’s appearance. So call me a hypocrite. But someone needs to educate haraS about professional footwear and make her go buy some. She had some cheesy floppy sandals in one early picture, then the Naughty Monkey shoes on the campaign trail, then the funky red ones she wore with her black suit in a posting here awhile back, then the red strappy sandals with her outfit for Memorial Day – all unprofessional and a distraction from any serious message she might be trying to deliver.

Wait – What was I thinking? – She needs all the distractions she can get, because she’s in real trouble if her supporters ever start paying attention to what she actually says.

  5. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:

If I “had” to listen to the Bob and Eddie show, I’d shoot my radio. Talk about torture.

  6. Shannyn says:

Mud, I want you to know how impressed we were with Brian’s manners…he didn’t eat one thing in the garden! He drank a bit, but didn’t seem drunk. Thom was quite taken with him. We’ll have to do it again the next time a famous guy comes to town!

Isn’t it just like (some) men to leave the little woman at home with the new twins while he goes out and parties! So there’s Brian, out on the town, partying hearty, and poor Brenda, still recovering from giving birth, home alone. I can hear it now: “No, no…it’s all right…you go on, Brian…don’t worry about little ol’ me…I’ll be fine…really I will…” Brian better plan on learning to love the couch, if this is how he plans to “help out with the babies.” I’m shocked, shocked and appalled. Also heart-scalded. I expected Brian to adhere to a better, finer, higher standard. I expected him to be a paragon of fatherhood. But I’ll deal…really I will…(turns back, crosses arms, and sniffs meaningfully)

Sarah from Alaska: Inside the Political Arrival that Rocked American Politics: What Really Happened, What it Means, and What’s Next for Sarah Pa

“Two ’embedded reporters’ in Sarah Palin’s historic vice presidential campaign – Conroy from CBS, Walshe from FOX – tell the behind-the-scenes story of the campaign and investigate its ramifications inside the Republican Party and for both Palin’s and America’s political future. Sarah Palin’s two month run for the vice presidency was one of the most exciting, bizarre, outrageous and in many respects most secretive campaigns ever run. Regardless of how you feel about her, it’s almost impossible from a standpoint of wanting to understand the nature of American politics and sheer curiosity (or outright voyeurism), not to want to know what actually went on behind the scenes when Sarah wasn’t out there backslapping and rallying her fans-and what Republican insiders were and are thinking about her political future and the future of the party.”

I heard most of Obama’s announcement of Sonia Sotomayor this morning. As an attorney, I can’t adequately convey my pride and approval of Obama’s speech. He emphasized intellect and following legal precedent as of primary importance for any SCOTUS

And so many conundrums for the RepoTaliban.
They want the Hispanic vote, Do they go after her?
She was both a Clinton and Bush number one appointee. Do they go after a Bush legacy?
They want the women’s vote. Do they go after her.

Unfortunately she votes pretty much along Repocon lines so she may balance the court more to far right.
However, can the party of NO accept Yes as an answer and – go after her?

If the Dems don’t fight too hard for her and they win, Please God, Obama’s next appointment, should there be one, will be “politically correct” in ways that fit our great but RepoTalibaned Civil Rights accomplishments.

If the Dems don’t fight too hard for her and they lose, they will have saved some political energy for the next appoineed and then Please God, Obama’s next appointment, will be “politically correct” in ways that fit our great but RepoTalibaned Civil Rights accomplishments.

I hope for her, and the Country’s sake this is a bloodless appointment. If not, I hope she as good friends, cause the Party of Hate will try to turn her hearings into a shark frenzy (^*.

I gather Palin didn’t believe this Republican talking point “our belief that judges should interpret rather than make law” when she appointed WAR.

If they think “Liberal ideology, not legal qualification, is likely to guide the president’s choice of judicial nominees,” I think our president has just proved them wrong.

  81. Margot says:

I’ve written REAL letters to Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow (back in January) and included many pictures of SP NOT pregnant. Never heard from them and didn’t expect to – just wanted to stir up some interest.

Surely Shannyn has discussed the SP scandal with them. Why no interest?

It looks like you have a good group of intelligent folks in Alaska. Surely you are not going to let SP out fox you.

  82. Margot says:

Great pictures. Looks like it’s getting warm in Alaska. Does this mean that Sarah’s iceberg is going to melt away?????????????

Oh SUPER post, AKM!! 🙂 Love all the pics, and the text and captions are great!

  86. rebekkah says:

Wow, Brian really stole the show. He’s pretty photogenic, but just needs to relax a bit more, and not look so “stiff”, like plastic. But, hey, for a moose, that’s pretty good. Must be taking points from your governor, back to work only 48 hours after the twins are born.

  87. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

I would most CERTAINLY call this a Hall of Fame event – what a lineup at Shannyn’s party! I could just hug Shannyn, Phil and Bill W! The others I don’t know, but I’ll take your word that they are smart and huggable, also, too. Brian is a party animal for goofing off while we were trying to name his babies and Brenda has back pains!

I miss the Alaska old timers that I knew here in Juneau, they are mostly gone now. Take care of any old timer you know and appreciate them frequently! I still use some of the old timers’ names of places around town. Juneau has been so “fluffed up” for tourists that I feel as though I want to preserve the feeling it had before all that. One of my dearest friends was a territorial lawyer here when they drafted the constitution and he was part of it, too! It’s hard to believe that was all just 50 years ago.

  88. PalinIsALiar says:

    Lol, think it worked.

    Speaking of Sarah’s twitter account,

Yesterday when I checked Sarah’s twitter account for any new developments, I also checked the first couple of pages of who was following her to see if I noticed any notable names. That is when I first noticed a particular follower who goes by “PalinIsALiar” (http://twitter.com/PalinIsALiar).

Curious, I clicked on this followers account to see what I could learn. I am sorry I did. This PalinIsALiar is a real nut job. And since yesterday when I first noticed this nut job, whenever I checked Sarah’s twitter account today for any new updates, I have noticed PalinIsALiar on the first page of Sarah’s followers. I guess what this nut job does is remove herself as a follower, and then adds herself back as a follower so that she will be seen on the first page. Talk about crying out loud for attention. What a tortured soul this pitiful person must have to do something so childish.

Update, as I was typing this I just happened to check PalinIsALiar account and low and behold look at what this nut job just posted on her account.

“@lisabeth60 No 🙂 Where is the # sign? I am unfollowing then following Palin over again to be on the top of her list. Drives her PAC crazy.4 minutes ago from web in reply to lisabeth60 “

    Hi Mudpups!
Reading everyone’s very creative suggestions to name the moose babies and the cereal got me thinking–what would a TV show about the Sarah and her family and friends be called? The Wasilla Hillbillies, of course, but what else? I’ll toss out a couple to get us going:

    House (gate)
    Trying-to-Be-a-Star Trek

  90. pvazwindy says:

How long must we wait before Alaska’s intellectual heavyweight weighs in on Sotomayor. She must be chomping at the bit.

  91. Nan says:

    Wow, something done right…

First spotted on Immoral Minority, then on KTUU site:

“Palin sent a letter to the federal government officially requesting the disaster declaration.

“The Federal Emergency Management Agency sent preliminary damage assessment teams into the area last week to get a firsthand look at the flooding damage. The teams are working their way down the rivers, village by village.”

Dunno what they’re doing beyond that, I guess we’ll see, eh?

    Nan

  92. KateinCanada says:

Loved the pictures of Brenda and her moosepups. I’ve never seen really young meese. Thanks so much for the pictures.

For more wild babies, here is a link to the BC eagle cams,
    http://www.hancockwildlifechannel.org/index.php?topic=cam-sites

The Hornby Island Nest wide angle cam is working (The close-up one is “fowled”) The Delta1 wide angle and close up are both working. Both birds are warming little grey eaglets at the moment, probably they’ll be more visible as the day warms up. I think it was at Hornby a couple of years ago that viewers scolded the nest land owner for allowing barking dogs nearby- which were really sea lions.

The announcement of Obama’s SCOTUS pick is happening right now… special reports all over the cable channels.

If you really want a moose to have a good time – and I assume Brian likes to have a good time – skip the shiraz and put out a nice bowl of beer. Seriously. Beer, not water, is the universal beverage. Make sure you stand clear. …

    Has Palin Twittered this yet?

There use to be a website called On Stagnant Pond about pink flamigos. One of the features on the website was the travels of Fred and Pinky Lee. You could apply to the website to have Pinky and Fred visit your town. There were pictures of them in Europe at Octoberfest, attending baseball games in Chicago, tanning on the beach in FL…

Maybe, Brian and Brenda would like to do a little travelling, especially during the long, dark AK winter. You could send them to mudflatters around the world to have their pictures taken with their fans. The pictures could then be uploaded to I Heart Mudflats.

What fun! I’m so envious of you AKM; I’d love to spend some time with Thom Hartmann and the Alaska progressive bloggers. That would be an evening to remember forever.
