Open Thread – Moose Twins Update

I saw some rustling in the trees this afternoon, and caught a few fleeting glimpses of reddish brown, and an occasional set of ears in the area behind the garden where Brenda the moose had her twins, but they didn’t come out in the open until late this evening.  At about 10:45, I noticed something dark pass by the sliding glass door and sure enough, mama and the babies had come out to explore.

~Got milk?~

~Got milk?~

The first thing I noticed was how much steadier they seemed on their feet after just 36 hours.  They are still trying to master those tall gangly legs, but they are well on their way.  The kids had a great time playing with the toys in the yard, and even checked out the swingset for quite a while.  One of them really seemed to take an interest in the toys, and also tried to frolic, which was quite amusing because the legs seemed to have a mind of their own and he almost wiped out on a couple of occasions.  Then when he started to nose the big red inflatable buoy, I knew who he reminded me of.  Brian.  Although Brian is a full grown bull now, he has so far not outgrown his youthful enthusiasm and often plays around with the stuff in the yard, and engages in spontaneous frolic on the lawn.

The other sibling seems a bit more tentative and definitely hungrier.  He would wander a little too far and then let out a noise which I can only describe as part meow, part squeaky toy and part baby alligator.  It was almost painfully cute.  And right on cue, mom was there.  She walked about half the distance to the baby and made her own version of the noise; a soft breathy “Eh.  Eh.” and the baby trotted over and began nursing.  There were lots of licks and nuzzles all around.

babymoose8

I was sitting in the thresshold of the door the whole time with my feet outside on the step, and the camera was clicking almost nonstop.  The light was very low, and I knew that most of the shots would probably be a bit blurry.  But I snapped over 300 images in that half hour, figuring that at least a few would be good.  I’m glad I did.

None of the family seemed the least bit interested in me, and mom led the babies right past me at one point, less than 10 feet away.

babymoose31

Then the little Brian-like one bent over and began eating grass in the “downward facing moose” yoga pose, and I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that this little guy took after dad.

babymoose6

After about half an hour, and a complete tour around the yard, they returned home to their little spot behind the garden and disappeared behind the grass and bushes.  I was left sitting half way in and half way out of my house feeling absolutely thrilled.  Brenda had made eye contact with me a couple times, but never with any fear or hostility.  It was more like an, “Oh, it’s you.”  And, when she walked right past me so close, it was almost as if she was showing off her new family.

I am resisting naming the little ones.  As much as I don’t want to think about it, statistics tell us that it’s very possible at least one of these guys won’t make it to his first birthday. (I say “he”, although we won’t know for a while what gender they are)  There are bears in the area, and all creatures must do what they need to do to survive; many at the expense of others.  But for right now, these little guys (or gals) are having great fun exploring this new world that is full of green grass, and swingsets, and rose bushes, and yellow trucks, and soft places to sleep and warm milk.  And some creature that keeps taking pictures.

    Here’s to wishing that Andree, etc., will finally file a Writ of Mandamus in an effort to force the personnel board to actually investigate an ethics complaint. Seems to me that the investigators are taking political instead of substantive considerations/actions in dismissing each and every one of these complaints. Put the matter before a judge in the appropriate jurisdiction and get an evidentiary hearing on the appropriateness and legality of dismissing all those complaints en masse.

    From my view, some portions of all of the complaints could be dismissed due to interpretation. But there is substance in nearly every single ethics complaint which requires an investigation of the facts. To dismiss all of these complaints in their entirety without further consideration or competent explanation represents an abuse of quasi-judicial power and is legally dangerous.

    And unlawful.

    Someone with standing needs to file a writ with the appropriate court and force the issue into an evidentiary hearing. The board needs to be kicked in the arse and there is no better way of compelling it to fulfill its statutory obligations than to present it with a Writ of Mandamus.

    What an adorable sight! The most exotic animal I’ve seen here in GA is a oppossum stuck up a tree. He was frozen with fear so there wasn’t much to see.

    LOVE the pictures!

    @ Honesty in Gov. Sorry to say I didnt. I got names in the White Pages.Com that were identical to mu daughter-in-law’s but they were older ladies who did not know her. Plus I found out that I was not spelling the city right. It’s Beaufort, South Carolina not Buford, South Carolina. So, I am still searching. Thank you for your concern.

    Well… best of luck in your search. When we were tracking/looking for the HS graduates we had no idea what City. We left it blank and just let the search field/filter empty. You get a larger search of names initially on the page…. but it would list everybodys age…. so it was no problem.
    Never used anywho.com which nswfm recommended but it is worth a shot. Hang in there… you will find her.

    What’s NUCCA? Muscle testing? How did you get off thyroid hormone?( just asking ‘cuz I take them) what do you take instead?

    Can I ask a stupid question about meth?

    I used to get sinus infections a lot when living in NYC and would often use psudafed(sp) alone or with Advil or Tylenol for the sinus headache. Luckily, I’ve not had to buy this stuff since 2003, but now you need to register your first kid to get these pills.

    How do the people who make meth get enough to make it, and a normal sick person is treated like a criminal?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    there used to be “recipes” about how to make meth. I think they use all kind of stuff, but this pseudophrine was a important part.
    I used to get sinus problems and sudafed made me sleepy, so I used to take chlor-Pheniramine for allergy, I used to be a vet tech and we used that for the dogs allergy.
    I hardly every use that anymore, but for sinus problems/cold/allergy I would recommend the “neti pot” Uses salt water to wash and irrigate the sinuses. You can buy them pretty much anywhere now. 🙂
    I guess Cali agrees with you?
    I just can’t describe my emotions at your moose-family pictures. Thank you SO MUCH for them, and for the love you radiate about them and towards them. Such a profoundly important commodity it is. Just a few wild creatures on the planet trying to survive in such a basically hostile world, for them. But SOMEONE cares about them…
    I have never seen a moose, LET ALONE MOOSELETS!! The lump I got in my throat at your first picture of them has only grown larger at these update pictures. Such precious, beautiful, wonderful little miracles I have never seen before.
    Many question have come to me since I saw your first picture. I wonder if in due time, you might share some more info…
    1. What, if you know, is the mortality situation of TWINS for moose (apart from the predator threat, etc)? In mean, is there truly enough for two, and does a mother favor one and neglect one, etc?
    2. Wondered if one seems significantly stronger than the other (more so than one just maybe being a female)?
    3. About how far is their nest from your actual house (that glass door you speak of) and how far is it away from your garden… just trying to assess, I guess, how safe these particular moose parents feel around you. It SOUNDS LIKE Brian at least, feels pretty darn familiar towards you! In fact, you say you have had so many families born right there, really shows you that moose do communicate with each other and they know that is a safe place. Just wondering how close the whole operation is to actual PEOPLE and people houses.
    4. Better thee than me… I would be desperately fighting off very strong maternal instincts right about now, trying NOT to talk to the family and NOT, NOT to feed them anything (in winter I probably would cave in). And just generally I would be having one heck of a time to keep myself from turning into their grandmother, their fairy godmother, their all-you-can-eat-buffet maintainer and Lord knows what else. And I know perfectly well, all that is NOT helping them survive in the long run and building too much trust of humans is definitely putting them at risk…
    I don’t know how you handle it because you can’t fool me, you are fighting the same urges on some level. Are you having a beastly battle with these types of things?
    5. Wondering how “dog” feels about this situation? Is he a risk to the babies? Ha, probably not when he’s looking down the broad nose of Brenda… but he must be interested. What does he say about it?
    I’m just a dyed-in-the-wool animal lover and really interested in how they live their lives… I guess I prefer them to the human kind on many levels. I guess it’s just easier to understand why they do what they do, than it is with humans.
    Thanks for any info.
    Okay, my husband made me laugh really hard when he said last night that he heard that Brenda was actually in Eagle River when she went into labor but decided to make the trip back to your yard in South Anchorage (I think that’s where you are, Potter perhaps?) to give birth as she did not want her twins to be Eagle River babies!
    He called it Brenda’s “wild gallop” and I know we don’t discuss those issues here but it still made me giggle.
    Still waiting to see the new mooses around here. Mom usually has twins each year and we’ve had two years running that they have survived to adulthood. We have seen last years’ babies up and down the woods along the cul-de-sac looking “lost” as mom as kicked them out in anticipation of the new ones but have yet to see her or the new babies.
    Thanks for the photos! They were spectacular!
    And another – this time mocking the proposal by Sec’y Chu to mandate white roofs and lighter colored asphalt to combat global warming.
    Palin: In the meantime, read this: Energy Secretary Chu wants to REGULATE roof, road color to slow global warming… http://tinyurl.com/q5ad59
    From the article …
    Steven Chu, the Nobel prize-winning physicist appointed by President Obama as Energy Secretary, wants to paint the world white.
    “A global initiative to change the colour of roofs, roads and pavements so that they reflect more sunlight and heat could play a big part in containing global warming”, Chu said yesterday.
    Perhaps someone should explain to Palin why white roof coatings are such a huge seller here in the Southwest where they are not mandated as they are in CA. We already know that our cities are “heat islands” due to their solar gain, and we know that countering the solar gain of individual buildings is largely done by burning carbon fuels. Once again, Palin’s scientific ignorance has her swatting fruit flies and talking teabaggerish nonsense about energy issues.
    LOL, fancy picking out a fellow Mudflatter. Have you noticed in the ADN comments lately, the anti SP posts are always most recommended and the pro SP post have 4 recommends. I suspect Peelanders are fighting a losing battle there.
    ______________
    Well to explain first, I used to be “EyeOnYou” over there, but when they started that delete everything phase, all but a couple of my posts were deleted (everything I wrote on Palin topics were gone, but everything else was left) and when I wrote and questioned that, they stated that they did not have the wherewithal to go back and point out what I had done wrong (nothing as I was careful to be respectful and follow the rules) but since I still has comments viewable that I was not banned. I simply deleted that account and started a new one (keeping copies of everything I write now for proof of bias in case I should need it, not that it matters much).
    Anyhow, a few comments that were before mine are now gone and they were ones calling Palin a moron and such, but no swear words, or comments that were off topic, just pointing out the idiocy of the Governor and her “hiring freeze”, so it is curious to try and figure out exactly who decides on what is acceptable and what isn’t.
    I notice, like you that the majority of the “peelanders” and other fans have more or less given up the invasion tactics that used to happen constantly, but there are a couple of peelanders that still post over there.
    How disrespectful can she be? I mean, I know it’s Memorial Day and you can wear white now, but I have a book for her: “What NOT to Wear”. Looking at her outfit: none of it goes together. Second of all: each individual piece was inappropriate for the event. The least she could do is show a little respect to the men and women, and their families, who have sacrificed their lives for us. UGH, she just makes me angry.
    But on a happier note: Thanks AKM for the lovely pictures! We had a “Brenda” who lived near us in Eagle River. She had twins each year we lived there. Most years they (sadly) became bear food, but one winter I saw a “teenager” moose with Momma. They hung out in our yard and the neighbors yard for the whole afternoon. I took tons of pics and I’m glad I did. Must find them. one spring she bedded down in my neighbors yard while in labor for 45 minutes. Poor dear – the babies weren’t in a hurry. She headed off down the road, and two days later we saw her with the twins for that year in the woods behind our fence. They are always adorable, but momma is going to be very protective.
Ya gotta love the caption, “Alaska Governor Sarah Palin reads a proclamation declaring May 25, 2009 as Memorial Day in Alaska while at a Memorial Day ceremony in Fairbanks.”
    Did you see she got invited to ND (I think ND) for an energy conference? Its in May 2010. Do you think she’ll RSVP or wait until the last min. There’s an article in the Newsminer about this event.
    peepeeland… a very on-the-mark description of those folks. what a bunch of whiners. I saw what they wrote about Linda K-B…
    “To summarise, they feel that Kellen Biegel’s behaviour is obsessive, that she is attempting to stifle the current administration in Alaska, that she is looking for information to hurt Governor Palin, that she is searching for dirt, that her initial blanket request for email records was an abuse of the system, that her complaints and requests take government employees away from their regular duties, that costs should not be borne by the tax payer, that Kellen Biegel’s actions are not an exercise in informing the public, that Kellen Biegel is not transparent about what she is looking for, that what Kellen Biegel is now engaged in is a “fishing expedition” – though some have called it a witch-hunt.”
    Guess we can put the peelanders into the category of “don’t like the 1st amendment when anyone but us utilize it legally.” As for process… the peelanders wouldn’t know what a process is unless it’s the cheese they wash down with their whine.
    On the Alaskan Government website at http://www.gov.state.ak.us/gov_eventinvite.php there is a form to fill in to invite the governor to an event and the key question might be “Is the First Family invited?:”
    Thanks for the link problem child. Yes… there is satire written there, but with the way they posted it and have all these comments in quotes… I am not sure if you were to just start reading the story… you would understand the sarcasm or satire. They didn’t exactly explain to the readers what they were trying to convey.
    They have this statement “It says it’s written by a Melvin Martin, but we’re suspicious. Read with caution:”… and mention ‘checking the facts ‘ but the reader has not been told which facts were wrong. They sort of let them assume that ‘SOME’ of the story is true. ..which would be wrong.
    Very interesting and creative. A certain bunch of ‘cons’ readers could go nutz with this though. They are not allowed/supposed to think on their own. They are told what to think.
    Loved the moose (mistyped ‘mood’- LOL that too) pictures. Great to see first on my email routine this morning. Besides the usual ‘awwwwww’ all I could think of was the mooselets seem about equal parts elbows, knees and noses – still so very cute.
    About Scarah and her mini skirts and f….me shoes, maybe she’s been paying attention to Mudflats and has realized no one understands her word salad – so she’s using her clothing and shoes to distract – this way, folks don’t listen, they either look on in lust…..or horror.
    @problem child and @nan – if I understand correctly, despite her veto there might still be some wiggle from for the energy funds part of the stimulus package…I hope so.
    In any case, the two paragraphs (can’t seem to get my cut/paste for quotes working) re: high cost of fuel in W AK and folks choosing between fuel and food, and the reference (thanks nan) to 30 percent of the folks living below the poverty line need to be pulled out, slapped on a poster, with her ‘no’ on there.
    Long time ago one of my journalism instructors, a tough lady and one of the first women journalists reporting from Vietnam told the class that the best way to hang someone is to ‘quote them exactly’. I’ve never forgotten that. I pass this tip on to all you AK folks in a gesture of solidarity and friendship.
    Big announcement in North Dakota today — the Rep. governor’s office has invited Scarah to speak at their big oil & gas conference next year. Now, I love the governor of my home state but, what are they thinking? Especially after reading about this latest can’t-get-my-schedule-straight-gate.     AKM, if moose mommies are half as tough as they say, that was quite a compliment Brenda paid you. 🙂
  220. Closet Mudpup says:
    Great pics! I hope Brenda stays around for more appearances with her little ones as they grow – they’re so adorable!
  221. Physicsmom says:
    Just adorable! Thank you for sharing some of your 300 (!) shots. You got some really good ones. I agree with SillyWabbit, the babies deserve names whether they survive the year or not. Also, it’s common for children to name animals before the gender is known, so you end up with “Queenie” being a male and “Homer” being a female. C’est la vie. It’s kind of cute.
    What a great way to start my day. So adorable. Thanks AKM.
  223. Carol.Seattle says:
    AKM,
    Thanks for the delightful pictures and description of Brenda and her babes. Reading that was a very refreshing, enjoyable way to start my day.
    A doe and her, now maybe 5-6 month old, fawn have very occasionally started coming into my area (They were never here before, but houses have been built all over around here. The animals are showing up much more in what little open space is left.) I, also, enjoyed watching them check out the front yard and browse from the trees down by the creek in front. A few days later, I found out that they had also enjoyed, to the very last morsel including the root, the Artichoke plant that used to exist in my garden in the back.
  224. Everyone is a sucker for baby pictures, including me. Those are great! Thanks for sharing.
    I don’t think it would be bad to name them, even if one doesn’t make it, they are still worthy of names. Just please, no Palin names! That NOONE deserves 😉
  226. Terpsichore says:
    And she’s done it again: “Despite several months of notice, the governor didn’t commit to be at the ceremony until the morning of the event-hence her conspicuous absence in the program. Before the program went to the printers, the governor had been given a deadline. Silence. … Governor Palin insisted she be sat on stage and demanded time for a speech. She spoke before the invocation and flag presentation as to not be “off program.” It was certainly appropriate for the governor to speak at such a high level ceremony, but her high level maintenance made it difficult for those that planned”
    I’d be furious if I were the event planners. And does Miss Sarah not realize how RUDE that kind of behaviour is? Does she not think for one moment how unprofessional it makes her look? How unreliable? This antic has now become the one that I let get my goat (or moose) about her.
    Babygate, shmabygate … how about “can’t-get-my-schedule-straighty-gate”?
    UK Lady – Touche !! We better be careful , or ‘pups from around the world will start posting places for sarah…….
    This morning while we waited for the school bus, I showed the baby moose pictures to 2 grandchildren – a girl in kindergarten and a boy in 3rd grade- and they just loved them! Their favorites were the swing-set and toy truck shots:)
  229. LiladyNY says:
    Thanks for the baby pictures. Now we’re all surrogate aunts and uncles for the newbies. They are so cute and I hope they’ll survive to grow up. I was fortunate enough to see young moose twins in Maine several summers ago. They were all gangly legs and so funny and adorable. People got out of their cars and were lined up on both sides of the highway just silently watching them and smiling. Finally the twins untangled themselves from their legs and disappeared into the woods. Sometimes life gives you these memorable moments of magic. Go Brenda!
    SP was wearing a mini skirt becaus she was jealous of these baby moose—they are all legs, and she didn’t want too be forgotten.
    Amazing pics. You are so lucky!
    Just saw the huff po pic of Palin…..what was she thinking wearing a mini skirt to an event like that?
  233. How wonderful. During my “earth mother” stage, I had goats. To see them walking around and trying to leap in the first hours of life, was quite a joy.
    Life can be amazing.
    UK Lady – Thanks for the link. Once again , Shannyn nails it. sarah is a clueless , disrespectful , flakey dumb-ass who dresses like a street walkin’ hooker on a day to honor our countries heroes and fallen. She belongs here :
    Ohhh, the babies are beautiful, the pictures are fantastic and many thanks to Brenda and to you, AKM for sharing it all with us.
    Here’s hoping for the best for both little ones. They’re terriific.
  236. Wow, these are wonderful pictures, AKM!! I want to have some baby moose in my back yard, too! Wait, I don’t really have a backyard. Anyway, these two are supersweet. Thanks a lot for giving us such lovely first-hand accounts about Alaska’s amazing wildlife.
  237. possum says:
    How fortunate you are!!!!!
    Thanks for sharing. Great job!
  238. Ripley in CT says:
    Yay!! Baby pictures!
    I am tentative, too, about getting attached to them so early. There’s a reason there are twins… increases the odds of one surviving. Perhaps they will thrive off your good juju and do just fine.
    Be careful out there. Mama meese can be dangerous, as you well know.
    they really are cute, though. 🙂
  239. Apphouse50 says:
    Oh, thank you so much for these. What a great thing this was for me to wake up to. Congratulations, Brenda, my nominee for Mom of the Year!
  240. UK Lady says:
    Aaw! they are real beauties!, love the proud mum showing them off.
    Shannyn takes it to Scarah again, story from Huffpo
    Oh, AKM… how lucky you are to witness such beauty! And how lucky we are to be able to share it with you! Thanks so much for sharing with us.
  242. austintx says:
    Cute x 2 !! Does it get any better than this ?!?! I fully realize the laws of nature , but I hope they both make it. Put “Buf” out there to chase away the “bad” guys…………
  243. Greytdog Δ says:
    LOVE the pictures! What a truly awesome experience for you! WOW> I get excited when the little fledglings start bouncing around. . .I couldn’t imagine the thrill of baby moose (meese?) in the yard!
  244. WakeUpAmerica says:
    So very adorable! Thank your for sharing them with us. I’m wondering how large your property is for Brenda to feel so comfortable birthing in your backyard. I love the pictures of the babies with the little kid toys.
