Rural Update – Flooding on the Y/K – Hope Truck Leaves FRIDAY!

~~Minor flooding was experienced in the village of Nunam Iqua~~

~~Minor flooding was experienced in the village of Nunam Iqua~~

By the time the National Weather Service called off its flood warning for Emmonak and other Lower Yukon River villages Tuesday, breakup flooding had soaked a total of roughly 40 communities along more than 3,000 miles of rivers, according to the state.

Gov. Sarah Palin sent a letter to President Obama Monday asking the him to declare a “major disaster” in Alaska — a move that could send cash to local governments and households.

Ann Strongheart, a resident of the village of Nunam Iqua on the lower Yukon says that breakup started there last night, and that the village is fortunately experiencing only minor flooding.  The waters appear to be receding, although the boardwalk to the airport that was submerged on Tuesday is still under water.

Many areas of the flood ravaged Yukon remain under ice, however, and assessment of damages is difficult.  FEMA and state agencies are still in the process of making damage assessments.

In Emmonak, where the state has denied the requests to declare an economic disaster because of dwindling salmon runs, the work is just beginning.

There, Nicholas Tucker said he was able to drive his boat to the school to pick up his kids. He’d never done that before, he said. Emmonak is close to the river and spring floods aren’t unusual. But this year houses that never get wet are soaked. People lost their snowmachines, residents reported.

If you would like to schedule a pickup of tools, clothing or other items for The Hope Truck which will drive supplies to Eagle this weekend, please email eagletruck@live.com , and if you are in Anchorage you can bring your donations to:

**The parking lot of Lowe’s,  10900 Old Seward Highway (just South of O’Malley) at 4pm, FRIDAY, May 29th.**

The Hope truck is a black Dodge Dakota Sport with a covered bed.  There will be balloons or some other marker on the top of the truck.  Send an email if you know you’ll be there so they don’t miss you!

For a list of needed items, click HERE.

We still need about $100 more to fully fund our gift of a pressure washer and cleaner to the residents of Eagle.  If you are interested in contributing, please click the donate button in the sidebar and write “PRESSURE WASHER” in the notation so I know that’s where it goes.  Anything I receive in excess of that amount will go to benefit the residents of Eagle to help rebuild their community.

Thanks to all who have stepped forward, and to all who are about to do so.  Mudflatter Hope is going to keep us posted on her odyssey.

    Hi Kim,

I emailed your question to yukonbushgrma and Hope, but we don’t have an email address for you. I didn’t find a “Kim” signed up in the forum. Can you email Hope at eagletruck@live.com with your question, OR sign up in the forum and post your question there? Here’s the link to the forum thread about the trip:

    https://themudflats.net/forum/index.php/topic,7285.new.html#new

Thank you for everything you are doing to help!

I’m posting this info for anyone who has expressed an interest in helping the Hope Caravan with fuel and trip expenses. Hope has NOT asked for this help, and is being pretty humble about it, but several people have asked (including me) because that’s all just part of the big effort!

So, if you want to donate money for the trip itself, you can use AKM’s PayPal donation system on MF and make a notation: “HOPE CARAVAN EXPENSES” (or ODYSSEY since AKM liked that one).

Or you can send a check to the Eagle Distribtution Center below, and make the same designation on the check. Yukonbushgrma is helping out at the center, so she’ll make sure Hope gets it that way.

I leave tomorrow out of state so I look forward to coming home to pictures and a great story! Thanks to EVERYONE who is helping, or just cheering from the peanut gallery!

I have a pile of stuff and had already made arrangements to meet at Lowes. Now I have an appointment at the same time across town & cannot reschedule it. Are any other Anchorage Mudflatters (who were planning to meet up with the Hope Truck) available tonight or Friday morning– so I could drop off the donations for the Hope Truck with you? Please email me if that’s a possibility:
    –thanks

    Martha Unalaska Yard Sign…

Could you also send me Hope’s address so I could send a check to help with trip expenses? Thanks in advance!

  5. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

Weird, AKM’s current post about Levi and cleavage disappeared. Twilight Zone.

  6. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

Thanks justafarmer! We have information spread from hell to breakfast, as my mother would say!

Here is the mailing address for the Eagle Distribution Relief Center if you want to mail a check there. As of now, that’s the only address we have for folks who want to send checks and not use PayPal. Yukonbushgrma has reported that they are doing a great job and of course all of Eagle is benefited in the best known ways with those funds.

  9. justafarmer says:

PayPal info from the forum and blog for those who missed it:

Thanks, Martha Alaska, I appreciate that. Looking forward to the PM.

  11. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

    @ califpat

You are right – I scanned the whole thread – and right now the only info is about Paypal through AKM (to Hope) or Paypal direct to the Eagle Rebuild Fund. I have emailed Hope a couple of times for an address for checks, so why don’t I send you a PM in the forum when I hear from her?

  12. califpat says:

Went over to Forum but did not see an address where I can send a donation for Pressure washer or for whatever is needed.

  13. califpat says:

excuse my typo: “way” not war.

  14. califpat says:

Thanks Martha Alaska. I am a member of the forum. On my war over there now.

Seattlefan, that’s a great idea! All the home-building stores have ‘bridal’ registries!
    ****************************************************

I know! They could also set up a cash fund along with the other stuff. I’m sure all these stores would get on board with it.

Hee hee, I’m going to wager a guess that Mudpup Hope is just a tad busy right now! I emailed her AND posted in the forum and she’s not replied yet.

While we are waiting for Hope (aren’t we always?), Ann S has a new post up regarding HER upcoming trip also, too! They are both starting their adventures within a day of each other.

Donating prayers, good thoughts and best wishes is just perfect! It all goes with Hope.

  19. here_in_PA says:

Too bad this couldn’t make the local news, I know doing things annomoosely is the safer thing to do. Its just sickening that GINO steals credit where it is not due. Just like going to the wrong villages and handing out cookies and bible verses.

I can’t donate but I’ll say some extra prayers for a safe trip!!! LOL, take lots of pictures!!

  20. bubbles says:

hi. mudpeeps, just donated and i can see we have succeeded in getting the pressure thingy. how ever much we have left will be spent wisely. good idea about food and gas for both trucks and don’t forget they have to sleep. so just keep on donating if you can and if you want to do so…..b

  21. seattlefan says:

In addition to my above post, this idea could work at any store like Penny’s, Costco, Target, Pet Food Store, etc. I know most stores have online and instore registries.

  22. seattlefan says:

I just had a thought….Can a registry be set up at Lowes (kind of like a wedding registry) with specific items listed and then everyone who wants to help can buy whatever is needed without worrying about duplicates? If more than one specific item is needed, it could be listed and then people can see realtime what is needed, what has already been provided.

    Just an idea.

  23. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

I emailed Hope and asked her to get over here NOW! Just kidding, I just kindly asked for some guidance about how to donate for her trip expenses…

GO HOPE GO HOPE GO HOPE GO HOPE WE LOVE YA

  24. It’s not much, but I donated what I could to the PW.

Do you know this sob? I have been working for eight years to get him indicted-

  25. empish says:

Hope is taking a long trip, she needs to eat and sleep along the way as well as gasoline. AKM? can we use the donate button for that too if we specify for Hope’s expenses?

Whew !! Had me goin’ there for a minute……………

  27. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

HOPE!! You were here, now you are gone! Ethereal!

How can we donate gas money for your trip? Should we use the AKM paypal Pressure Washer method, or can I send you a check?

  28. LadyInCali says:

I’d like to contribute money for gas for the Hope truck. Has anyone figured out a way to do that yet?

  29. Hope says:

YIKES! Little typo! We will be at Lowe’s in Anchorage on FRIDAY may 29, not tomorrow (Thursday May 28)

I can hardly WAIT to meet you all! I’m excited! it’s raining down here today, so hope it clears a a little so we get good pictures for all of you! I’m taking you with us! THANKS for all the encouragement!

    HOPE!!

  30. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

@ califpat – if you are a member of the forum, you can check in w/ the gang on the thread I posted. What would you like your money donated to go towards? There is the Eagle rebuild fund, the Pressure Washer fund, I’m trying to figure out how to donate to a road trip fuel fund.

  31. califpat says:

I would like to send a check. Where do I send it?

  32. Canadian Neighbour says:

Haven’t used Paypal for so long, couldn’t remember the password!! Got it!! Done!!

Explain to Lowe’s and any others that donations are coming from all over, Alaska, Lower 48 & Places Beyond!!!! Add to the tugging of Management Heart Strings for donations!!

  33. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

This is just so exciting that I can’t stand it! It was austintx that came up w/ the idea of the pressure washer and cleaners, then that smart mudpup recruited another mudpup who works at Lowe’s to help figure out what they need. If you have time to read the progression of events, here’s the forum thread:

    https://themudflats.net/forum/index.php/topic,7285.new.html#new

If you tend to cry, grab a kleenex first. Hope is MY HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope is just what yukonbushgrma and Eagle needs!

I wanted to help out with gas costs for the drive, so I’ll check in with Hope to see how we can do that if they already reached the pressure washer goal.

  34. KaJo says:

Great idea, MonaLisa….Maybe someone can contact Target, too, and Wal-Mart — I KNOW from many past blog entries that both chain stores are somewhere around Anchorage and Wasilla.

  35. BigSlick says:

I just figured out my wife’s PayPal account and donated for the Pressure Washer too…. only to come here and find others had already covered the $100.

Please use the surplus to help in whatever way possible.

BTW – AKM, I sent you a little “maternity gift” and it should arrive around Friday.

  36. MonaLisa IS MY NAME! says:

I hope someone offers the management of Lowe’s the opportunity to contribute, as well. Suggest perhaps a ‘Match Us Dollar for Dollar’ deal, mention pre- and post-event press releases, photo ops (and maybe a shout-out for the company from the blogoshphere to a national/international audience?)

    Can’t hurt to try….

  37. empish says:

I suspect we have made that final hundred already! 😀

  38. Laurie says:

Thank you gals….(guys?) I donated. I am so happy to be able to do something to help.

  39. InJuneau says:

yes, I believe that we’re supposed to use AKM’s Make a Donation button up there ^ with the notation of Pressure Washer or something like that, and AKM will get the funds to the HOPE Truck folks or directly to Lowe’s to pay for the washer and cleaners. The remaining $ will go off to Eagle for whatever they need.

  40. MonaLisa IS MY NAME! says:

LAURIE: Scroll this page up to the top. On the right hand side, just under the ‘Blogger’s Choice ’08’ award, is a yellow MAKE A DONATION button.

  41. Canadian Neighbour says:

Are Paypal donations through AKM’s Donation button on the sidebar???

  42. pearl89 says:

I just donated to the pressure washer, but I called it a power washer. There should be some left over. I would like the remainder to be used for pet food, if possible. I assume some people in Eagle have cats.

Oh, heck, just use your best judgement and use the little bit extra for whatever you think is best.

  43. Laurie says:

Please dont think me stupid…but do I donate here for the pressure washer or somewhere else. I will do it right away as long as I know where to do it.

  44. empish says:

I donated to the pressure washer, come on folks, lets get that last $75 together tonight!

Just to let everyone know, my church is sending $$$ for dog food. When Yukonbushgrma suggested this, I though how wonderful, but then it would cost mucho bucks to ship. We are sending a check, they will order from Fairbanks, and there are drop off points that will accept and see that it gets to Eagle. Just an idea for others, if they should wish to do this.
