Speaking Up.

There’s a moving op ed piece in today’s Anchorage Daily News.  Grace Jang, a Korean-American journalist had an encounter with none other than right wing talk show host Eddie Burke, Governor Palin’s golden boy, and unofficial mouthpiece for the administration.  It didn’t go well.

On May 18, my photographer and I are invited to a conservative radio talk show to get behind-the-scenes video of a debate on a divisive issue. We accept.

As a Korean-American journalist, I recently found myself an unwitting part of a disturbing story.

The radio station has two guests whose views differ from the host. It is a fiery show, and listeners queue up to sound off. As part of the discussion, the talk show host brings up race and begins to imitate an Asian accent: “Ah, you like, ah, you know, you like a rice.”

Both his guests, neither of whom is Asian American, groan disapprovingly.

Seconds later, he interrupts his guest with another Asian imitation.

And then again:

“I can dog Koreans because I’m married to one.”

Nice.  So can he “dog” women because he’s married to one?  And what’s his excuse with the gay community?  He’s not married to them, and yet his dogged prejudice seeps out his pores.  It was two ministers from the Metropolitan Community Church speaking in support of the upcoming anti-discrimination ordinance that were the guests that day.  And the topic revolved around the LGBT community, and their rights as citizens to not be discriminated against in employment or housing.

At the end of her thoughtful piece, Jang asks, “Isn’t it time for someone to speak up and say ‘Enough?'”

Yes, it is.  It’s time to say “enough” to all of it; all the narrow-minded put-downs, and the reasons people use to cut others down based on who they are; the smug superiority that makes the speaker worth more, and those he “dogs” worth less.  I would love to live in a town where that kind of behavior would be considered horrifying, not one where this guy has the #1 rated talk show, and is the chosen conduit for state government to speak to the people.

Or, as they say in New Mexico, BASTA!

We all should be saying ‘enough’ to the hate coming into our communities.

It is poison and it has to stop. Our duty, as citizens, is to work together to correct it.

You said “still traumatised” – well hon, make sure to take enough time for yourself, treat yourself like a proud survivor, because that’s what you are – and besides, you deserve it, by gum!

all the best, and take care of yourself!

To be serious, we have to stand up to the right wing crazies, and espose their insane rants and lies. Limbaugh, Rove, Hannity, Liddy, O’Reilley, Beck, etc. are the new Joseph McCarthys, turning lies and character assassination into an art, and surpassing McCarthy in their dishonesty .

In the 1950’s a few people of character in politics and in journalism, like Joseph Welch and Edward R. Morrow stood up and ultimately destroyed McCarthy- “in the end, have you no sense of decency, sir?”

By contrast the Republicans of today are sniveling cowards who can only line up to worship the haters, and the “journalists” uncritically republish the hate speech and lies because it improves ratings and lines their pockets.

Who will finally stand up and expose these right wing haters and their lies?

How do you refuse to allow a woman ‘testify’ and explain how evil you are because you have respect for other cultures — when you’re surrounded by angry, polyester-clad bob-a-long evangelicals? (Recent experience, I’m still traumatized.) Limbaugh is a doddle, compared to the racist Idaho clan that slashed my tires to ‘help’ me during my first escape attempt.

We can demand that they allow their children to be educated. Truly educated. Of course, not much chance of that, since OUR children are being denied education, and how can you fight for content when you’re fighting for school days and unlocked library doors? We can promote AM radio stations with moderate content, with fact-based debate, with off-the-grid musical content that encourages social development.

And we can take a stand, right there at the moment of injustice. But I gotta tell you, it didn’t work at the Memorial Day travesty I attended. Offering someone a world view that is outside their comprehension is a waste of time.

I say, get ’em young. Let’s concentrate on subverting the under-10 crowd. Because they’re much cuter, and easier to twist. Ask any smirking churchman.

According to the book State Names, Flags, Seals, Songs, Birds, Flowers, and Other Symbols by George Earlie Shankle (New York: H.W. Wilson Company, 1941):

“The sobriquet, the Nutmeg State, is applied to Connecticut because its early inhabitants had the reputation of being so ingenious and shrewd that they were able to make and sell wooden nutmegs…. Some claim that wooden nutmegs were actually sold, but they do not give either the time or the place.”

Famed Yankee ingenuity notwithstanding, it could just be that buyers unfamiliar with the spice may have failed to grate the nutmegs, thinking they had to be cracked like a walnut. Nutmegs are wood, and bounce when struck. If southern customers did not grate them, they may very well have accused the Yankees of selling useless “wooden” nutmegs, unaware that they wear down to a pungent powder to season pies and breads.” (Elizabeth Abbe, Librarian, the Connecticut Historical Society; Connecticut Magazine, April 1980.)

BURKE TO PAY $1,500 FINE IN INCIDENT BUSINESSMAN PLEADS NO CONTEST TO ASSAULT, COMPOUNDING CRIME
    LIZ RUSKIN
    Daily News reporter
    Staff

A tearful, apologetic Eddie Burke pleaded no contest Thursday to misdemeanour charges for grabbing at a waitress’s crotch, then offering to pay her $400 to keep her from reporting him to the police. Burke, owner of a downtown gas station and former Anchorage Assembly candidate, was fined $1,500 for assault and compounding a crime. Prosecutor Susan Wibker said Burke was out carousing that April night, going from strip joint to strip joint in a white limousine with friends. After midnight, Burke stopped by the Peanut Farm, a restaurant and bar on Old Seward Highway.

“He was intoxicated and he was sexed up,” Wibker said.

Hey Eddie – you might want to tone down the racial stereotypes before you wife realises she’s married to an idiot.

There is no excuse for racial stereotypes that aim to cut down a person’s heritage and reduce it to stupid jokes that aren’t even funny OR original. I would think being married to a Korean American lady, he would have a deeper appreciation of that culture but I guess you can’t cure stupid.

I will be happy to do both.

Eddie claimed that it was costing the state “MILLIONS” to fight these complaints, and McAllister did nothing to correct that, despite the article in the ADN claiming it was costing about 1/3 of a million.

Both were quite happy to bash those who file ethics complaints and McAllister stated that the people who filed these complaints and then went to the press/media were breaking the law by doing so. There was also an indirect admittance that either the Governor or her staff are reading the blogs/comments because a reference is made to something said.

It’s a 9 minute interview, 4 typewritten pages long, so I am not sure…maybe I’ll post it on the forum since it is probably too long to post here. I’ll check with either AKM or the Mod’s and find out…

Jang’s post in ADN was excellent, not only for the content but for the structure of the piece itself. As you read through the essay, it recapitulates the process of discovery of dormant truths within herself about her experience…..beginning with the “desensitized” and even reluctant voice….through the questioning voice….and ending with the clarity of the moral and responsible voice. Obviously, she’s an accomplished and experienced writer. Good for her for standing up and interjecting herself “into the story.”

Jang mentions specifically that she had become “desensitized” to ethnic/racial slurs. Although “desensitization” is a true phenomenon that does occur very often to a myriad of physiological and psychological stimuli in our environment, it can also be just a facade that covers the real reasons why people don’t speak out when they see injustice:

    -Fear…of negative or unpleasant consequences to oneself;

-Expediency…..”It’s not my fight;” “What can one person do?”

    -Cynicism….”Nothing will ever change;”

-Apathy….”Who cares? Life’s tough all around. Get a thicker skin.”

-Lack of a sense of moral outrage at injustice, small or large…..

(Just noticed the acronym I inadvertently (swear it, guys!) spelled with the first letters of each line….sounds about right for these excuses. Haha.)

Enough is enough. Make a stand when you can…..it all adds up to a more positive resonance in our “Elegant Universe.” ( One of my favorite cosmology books, “The Elegant Universe,” on String Theory etc. by Brian Greene. Highly recommend.)

    Bill:

There is confidentiality written into the statute, now there is no penalty for violating the confidentiality, but as in the legislative ethics act if you do that, your complaint is automatically dismissed. But for some reason that provision does not exist in the executive ethics act so people file these complaints and then they go out and do what they really want to do and that is get some publicity to try and impugn the governors character.

Did anyone hear Eddie’s show today? I already did my penance for the week so I didn’t have too. I am wondering if he reacted to the oped piece or is waiting for tomorrow to launch his attack. I am sure he is going to say that some people just can’t take a joke. I am waiting to see if he will bring up that he used the term “dog koreans”, to prove that it was a joke.

    ____________

How’s this for penance….I not only listening, but ended up finding a copy on youtube and typing it out word for word. Why? Because he had Bill McCallister on and they were talking about the article in the AND regarding the ethics charges and how much they cost! I wanted it saved, and since it was a peelander hosting the youtube copy I didn’t know how long it would be available.

Mr McAllister and Mr Burke are a couple of outright liars on air.

  79. Nan says:

Aussie, you make several very good points. But in this case, just maybe keeping quiet was appropriate. For one thing, Burke would have had no qualms in going after her right there on the air – following it all up with “can’t ya take a joke?” Right… it’s her own famn dault. I don’t think so.

This struck me odd: the disclaimer at the end of her article said:

“Grace Jang is a reporter for a local television station. The opinion here is her own and does not represent the views of her employer.”

  80. bucfan says:

According to Eddie, Jerry and others, gays do not deserve equal protection (that is what this is all about, not special rights like the right tries to spin it) because they made the choice to be gay. Okay if they cannot have equal rights because of a choice, then we should remove all equal protection for anything that involves a choice. Race, not a choice. Gender, not a choice, unless you have visited a Scandinavian country. Religion, wait a minute……

  81. Bent Alaska says:

People are writing letters to the station manager about Burke’s three nasty racist/sexist comments during a program where he spent two hours preaching against gay people. He’s been ranting about ‘landlords being forced to rent to sinful queers’ since the non-discrimination ordinance was introduced on May 12, and he will continue ranting through the public hearing on June 9.

I applaud Grace for speaking up about his racism, and I understand how hard it can be to break a survival-strategy habit of silence. I hope people will also reject Burke’s nasty anti-gay prejudice.

Thanks for speaking up about this!

  82. Aussie Blue Sky says:

Thanks for blogging about this, AKM. When I read it last night I couldn’t believe that Grace found it natural to shut up because she was on the job. If some ignorant creep like Burke told me it was cool for him to diss Australians or Connecticuties because he was married to one, I would have had him on the mat right away.

Where I live we have the Racial and Religious Vilification Act – not that we’ve ever needed it, but that’s precisely why we have it – and this Act has only once ever been called into effect …… and guess what?? It was against a right-wing fundamentalist Christian attached to some right-wing fundamentalist Christian group in the United States ……

I’m glad Grace has seen the error of her ways. Calling out and not tolerating this kind of behaviour isn’t going to make her the story.

Home Depot has contributed tons of money to the Republican Party. Their co-founder Bernie Marcus has been leading the charge against the Employees Free Choice Act. Remember they are based in Atlanta, the heart of right to work country. So I am not surprised that they support Rush. I am sure the people on their board have his stationed programmed on all the buttons of the radios in their limos. And as far as Eddie Burke goes, when I read the oped piece in the paper this morning, while I could believe several local hosts could make that comment, based on the fact that it involved denigrating women, I knew it was Eddie. Every time I hear him shill the fact that he is a veteran, I cringe. He calls women baby killers and gives their numbers out, he goes over a State Rep he disagrees with, he goes after Andree Mcleod, and he is Prevos b*** buddy in trying to deny equal rights for gay people. Hmm, attacking women and gays. Almost sounds like he is trying to validate his masculinity. Hmmm, being over the top with anti-gay rhetoric, almost sounds like Larry Craig, Ted Haggard, Jim West, the anti-gay gay mayor of Spokane Washington and numerous others. Not that I am implying anything.

I like the ideas (that have worked in the past) on this thread about holding sponsors accountable for what comes out of the mouths of awful misogynist radio/teevee ‘entertainers’ who encourage ignorance of the worse kind. Ignorance that creates fear (us vs. them) is harmful not only to the meek and mild mannered, but to the frightened and violent prone as well.

This is a true story though it did not happen to me.
Office full of white male coworkers, one of whom is telling sexist/racist jokes. The men moan and groan and try to give the joker a hint to knock it off. One man finally gets angry and asks “And what nationality is YOUR wife, sir?” because his wife was not white and he was offended.

Comparing one man’s defense of his wife to Burke’s repeated insults to his wife, clearly Burke has problems.

I have let our local Home Depot manager know that I will not shop there, because they are a Rush sponsor. He told me that he has passed that on many times to national management; I wonder if that’s why HD’s profits are down while Lowe’s are up.

If more of us voiced our opinions with our dollars…

  105. redwoodmuse says:

I’m with AustinTX, folks should not only not shop at Burke’s sponsors, but they should write a letter to the sponsor letting them know why they are not shopping there. And perhaps one of the bloggers could start a list of those businesses who sponsor Burke. Wouldn’t have to make much comment, just a list.

Personally, I haven’t shopped at Sears since 1978 (they poured millions of dollars into advocating higher insurance premiums for women – because we live longer). Won’t support Whole Foods, Wendy’s or Dominoes (for political reasons – women’s rights and gmo) Might not make much difference, but I feel better letting my wallet do the talking.

  107. dowl says:

Thank you for this story. I’m fairly certain that this happens many times over with the very similar results. We hear something that is not ‘right’ and say nothing and/or the offender makes and attempt to apologize and we say, it’s okay. At the end of the day we question ourselves on why we did not speak up and the offender continues to feel that it’s okay to continue behaving in a way that strengthens a weakening position of ultimately false sense of power over other ‘types’ of human beings.

In the best of situations, it is possible to unconsciously offend. When we don’t intend to offend and are gently prodded by the offended person, we learn to recognize offense and we are usually more thoughtful in the future. It is a conscious lesson that we choose to learn.

This is not just being ‘politically correct.’ When we practice PC behavior without being empathetic to others and our own offensive behavior and language, we’ve not learned the lesson. Sometimes, some of us simply don’t want to learn. Power concedes nothing without a demand…

Where would hot air fact-free ‘commentator’ radio and teevee hosts if they were publicly held accountable for the venom that so easily passes for ‘entertainment’?

  108. EyeOnYou says:

No really it’s all good because the manager, Justin McDonald, will speak to Eddie tell him “naughty boy” and that will be the end of it. Unless of course he decides to go on air and chastise Eddie like he did when he was “upset” about getting calls complaining about Eddie and felt the need to go on air and complain about “foul” language used during the private calls to him (the manager).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-Kj9I9NXr8

Will this manager Justin go on air and publicly apologise for Eddie’s behavior? Not likely. Will Eddie? Only if he is forced to do so. Does it matter? Well he is one of the governor’s mouth pieces so it’s all good….right?

  109. Bea says:

People like him pollute our public airways. It sickens me that this kind of ignorant hate speech still sells in so many markets.

  110. ValleyIndependent says:

Ms. Jang wrote a nice piece and in it ponders what she would have done had she not been working there, but listening to the program on the radio instead. What is most disturbing is that many people presumably WERE listening on the radio and yet the station was not flooded with calls letting the host know his comments were inappropriate.

I think we’ve all been guilty of letting something slide at one time or another, but she’s right. We need to be conscious of what we say, and speak up the moment we hear hurtful things from others.

  111. Visitor says:
