Open Thread: The Super Bowl, The Day After

Well, people here’s your open thread to vent. Did your team lose? Win? Didn’t have a horse or hawk in the fight? Want to go on a Chomsky-esque rant about how the game is a distraction from the big issues that face our country? Go for it.

Senate passed farm bill and sent it to Obama for his signature/veto.

  2. AKjah says:

The big game is the TPP. Fast track will surelly beget some advantages. I would be betting on Pebble to win if that goes through. And that fracking will be the ruin of clean water in the south central coast and bristol bay. It looks like offense has the strong hand. Defense needs some weight. I am routing for the home team and hope we find the where withall to pull of the win.

    • AKjah says:

      Midnight spelling

      • Alaska Pi says:

Midnight spelling is fine as long as it ends in a rout FOR the home team, its all ok 🙂
        Go us and we!

      • mike from iowa says:

Word of caution. Rooting for the home team if all good in the USA. Rooting in Australia has a far more, different meaning. If you had an Australian couple rooting in the USA,then any audience watching them root could conceivably root for them, but not with them. If you are confused mayhaps Jeanne could demonstrate with her famous stick figures, which I wish she could find the time and inclination to use more often. Take that,Jeanne!

I enjoy football. Growing up with one television, us kids had no choice during football season. Nowadays, as a mother, football is one link of great conversation I can have with my adult son. We like Peyton Manning, yet, knowing that Seahawks have never won a SuperBowl, were going to be happy if they won. But, the game was lame.

However, afterwards, I read an article and I am so GLAD that the Broncos lost big time! Here is the article I read. Bronco management are huge Romney (GOP) supporters. The management of Hawks are millionaires and may be just as ignorant- but at least Washington as a state is progressive.

    • They just had the parade today and over 700,000 showed up in the streets and filled both Century Link stadium (Seahawks) and Safeco Field (Mariners). It was fun and the players really love Seattle as much as we all love them. Seeing so many people come together when there are so many issues that split us, it was great.

Didn’t know that about the Broncos management, but I guess I’m not surprised. My cousin, an avid republican who lives in Denver.

    • Cathy Heyworth Harris says:

LOL Thanks for the link Polly. The comments were hilarious. SAFETY!!!!!! Oh, he got that safety alright, in 12 seconds. Like the 12 Disciples, the 12th Man, 4×3=12 …

ZR, The Chomsky-esque rant was so interesting. “Irrational jingoism”, good thing I keep a dictionary close by,
I would never had guessed what jingoism meant. I do feel a little more informed., and he makes some
interesting points. I get the “diversion” idea or thought. I also see a similar-type jingoism when it comes to
those who want to push their religion on others. For instance, there is a family member graduating from
12th grade at the public school here in “my town”. Naturally, we are very proud of the senior and feel the
achievements made have been remarkable, and what a nice, smart , young person graduating from
an Alaskan public school. I am proud of the parents for their loyalty to their child. Our student informed us that one of the 12 local religious professionals will be
“giving a half hour sermon” at the graduation ceremony at the school. I was asked to find out more about
“this”. My question was, “who invited the religious professional and why one over 11 others. There are
many religious buildings in the area for the sermons to be said., and equal amounts of religious
professionals willing to say them”. ZR- is this a “rant”?

      http://madvilletimes.com/2013/05/chamberlain-indians-honor-graduates-respect-law-and-school-boundaries/

Lakota Indians asked the school board to allow this group inside to honor graduates with music. School board said no on the grounds they would have to include every other religious or special interest group. Christian god and beliefs was the only religion mentioned during ceremony. The thing is-christian religion honors only christians,Lakota honor song covers all peoples.

      • Alaska Pi says:

Interesting comments on that post there. Some real skewed notions of what constitutes equality and the like.
So far, we are not getting very far in changing the conversation. Dang.

      • Zyxomma says:

I’ve heard the Lakota honor song, live and in person, when I attended a sundance at the Rosebud Reservation years ago. The occasion was the medicine man (husband of my friend there) being made a tribal chief. It was beautiful, and brought tears to my eyes. So did the ceremony itself. The descendants of Sitting Bull spoke to honor the medicine man, then the singers sang. I loved it.

      🙂
Close to a rant but not quite a rant- too many good questions which really need answers.
The Chomsky dealie is a rant as it presupposes certain things and makes causal connections (which are shaky because there are other viable and compelling arguments of cause which should be looked at ) .
Rants are not bad things in and of themselves but they aren’t necessarily good things either- the temptation to devolve into simple tirade is always strong.
What you are doing is one of the better things we can do-regardless of what we call it

  5. Really? says:

Yesterday, during superbowl, I thought about a statistic I read stating domestic violence is higher during superbowl
than any other day of the year. I was hopeful this year would be different in that more people would find it within themselves to desire to find the right tools to help learn more about Human Kindness . A lot of time is spent on hurting people. It’s hard for me to watch a violent sport when I try not to be around violence.

  6. Well, don’t throw things at me, but I loved it, being from the Seattle area. Yes, I would have liked a game where Denver showed up, but I couldn’t be happier that the Seahawks won. I watched the whole game, all the commercials and the half-time show. I don’t usually do that because the teams tend to be ones that I don’t like or don’t care about. This one I did care about. It was even more interesting to me because I spent a lot of time back in the 60s and 70s in and around Denver. My mother became a football fan when she lived in Longmont (north of Denver) for 10 years. Then when she moved out here, she became a Seahawks fan. But I’ve always followed both teams.

So, why is the NFL a non-profit? I don’t get that. But the game was not disgusting. And before you criticize the Seattle players, take a little time to find out who they are. They are an amazing bunch, active in our community and their own.

And I watched Downton Abbey last night after the game. That the advantage of being on the west coast. 🙂

    • mike from iowa says:

BOO seattle,no, Boo the coach. Never liked him and I thought it was terrible coaching USC until they got probation and then just waltzing away to bigger and better things in the NFL.Can’t stand Elway in Denver. Wasn’t interested in the game or commercials. I do,however, have a Sister and BIL in Longmont as I speak. I don’t keep interest in the Sooper Bowl unless there are former Hawkeyes or just iowa kids playing on one team or the other. Congrats anyway,at least Seattle kept the forty-whiners home.:)

      • benlomond2 says:

okay – mikey ,,, 🙂 we’re gonna have to discuss that comment .. you can insult me, the wife and the family dog,, but when ya start talking stuff about my football team, we have just split the blanket, wa-tash !! chortle.. no worries dude.. the Super Bowl was two weeks ago, as far as I’m concerned… and it came down to one play… we lost they won,, on to baseball season ! With Winter Olympics to tide us over til Spring Training starts !
        Ben

        • mike from iowa says:

Did you get the extry raggits I sneekily mailed your way? These have had experience wading through thorny goosberries and tangled up asparagus hells. My SB was back when your team eliminated my Packers. They are my Packers cuz they have three former Hawkeyes on their roster. When are you able to start gardening? Late March or early April here, depending on weather.

          • benlomond2 says:

The cats LOVED the raggits !! send more !! Plum tree burst in to blossom this weekend, I’ll probably start planting end of this month, with the quonsett hut style plastic cover. definitely drip irrigation system this year with the drought, although I’m playing with the idea of running a hose across the street to the “river” for yard use..

  7. Millie says:

Had friends over to watch the game and we stopped viewing mid way. Not a game – sad to say! Think of the money spent by so many to watch that game! We started playing cards and enjoyed the homemade food.. not missing a thing!

    • The thing is, people who spend money to throw a party shouldn’t expect any particular outcome or excitement level of a game. It’s a game, and nobody makes someone spend money on a party. So what?

  8. Is it still called a “football game” when only one team plays?

  9. Zyxomma says:

I detest football, and am furious that the NFL is a non-profit that pays NO federal income taxes (although individual teams do). Disgusting game, IMO, and promotes the kind of celebrity hero-worship that has been coarsening the culture for far too long. I did tape and watch Downton Abbey. Does that make me a snob?

    • Forty Watt says:

I used to have nightmares that “they” wouldn’t let me become a citizen if I didn’t understand the rudiments of football. Fortunately, that isn’t true. 😉

Downton Abbey, sorry Zyx, that I come close to detesting.

      • Alaska Pi says:

        🙂
I once worried that not being able to follow more than my son in a football game would tag me as un-American amongst the small and rabidly pro football community we were living in.
        Then I decided I didn’t care.
Son also played on a co-ed badminton team- they were dang fine players.
        THAT I totally enjoyed.
