The Weekend Off – The News You Missed

Alaska

Anchorage Daily News – John Devens, mayor of Valdez at time of oil spill, dies at 74

“On the eve of March 24, 1989, John Devens was living what was, for him, a near-perfect life. He was serving as the mayor of Valdez and as the president of a community college he’d expanded. He had also gained a license to operate a charter boat, and was running a small audiology practice on the side.”

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner – ‘Alaska Agreement’ good theory, flawed practice: The campaign funding reform issue shouldn’t be tackled piecemeal

“Called the “Alaska Agreement,” the pledge’s stated purpose is to leave state residents in control of the race’s funding.
Under its terms, candidates would have to donate half the value of any third-party attack ad buys to a charity of their opponent’s choice. Mr. Sullivan modeled the agreement on the “People’s Pledge” agreed to by Sen. Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren in their 2012 race in Massachusetts.”

Anchorage Daily News – Alaska Native youth and violence by the numbers

“During the two-day hearing on American Indian/Alaska Native Children Exposed to Violence, Alaskans who have survived violence themselves, or who serve the state’s many families and children in crisis, spoke about the barriers to meaningful change.”

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner – Galena making progress in flood recovery

“One year later and the town of Galena is still a work in progress, but it’s a community again instead of just a construction zone. Galena was the largest and worst-hit of the Yukon River communities flooded last year.”

The Real News Network – WATCH: Child Detainees Victims of US Immigration Policy Based On Mass Incarceration & Detention

The Guardian – California salmon migrate by truck as state helps fish through drought

“In drought-stricken California, young Chinook salmon are hitting the road, not the river, to get to the Pacific Ocean. Millions of six-month-old smolts are hitching rides in tanker trucks because California’s historic drought has depleted rivers and streams, making the annual migration to the ocean too dangerous for juvenile salmon.”

The Daily Beast – Tesla’s Radical Patent Move is a Plot to Take Over the Road

“The founder of the world’s sexiest electric car company announced that he’s opening up patented Tesla technology to anyone who wants it. But it only looks like philanthropy: what Tesla really wants is for other car companies to be more like them. Tesla founder Elon Musk shocked the world with his latest convention-wisdom defying move this week. In a blog post, he announced that the company would open up its patents and other intellectual property to competitors. “Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology,” he wrote.

This generally just isn’t done.”

Washington Monthly – Thrown Out of Court: How corporations became people you can’t sue.

“Following the 2011 and 2013 Supreme Court rulings, dozens of other giant corporations—from Comcast and Wells Fargo to Ticketmaster and Dropbox—have secured the same legal immunity.”

International

New York Times – Militants Claim Mass Execution of Iraqi Soldiers

“Militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria boasted on Twitter that they had executed 1,700 Iraqi government soldiers, posting gruesome photos to support their claim.”

BBC – Study: Deforestation leaves fish undersized and underfed

“Deforestation is reducing the amount of leaf litter falling into rivers and lakes, resulting in less food being available to fish, a study suggests. Researchers found the amount of food available affected the size of young fish and influenced the number that went on to reach adulthood.”

The Independent – YouTube refuses Egypt’s request to remove footage of Tahrir Square sexual assault

“YouTube has refused a request from the Egyptian government to remove footage of a violent sexual assault in Cairo.”

World Cup

Vox.com – 10 things non-soccer fans need to know about the World Cup

“Millions of soccer fans around the world have been waiting four years for the 2014 World Cup, which begins on Thursday. Millions of American sports fans, however — who have been spending that time watching (American) football, basketball, and baseball — will tune in and be a little confused.”

WATCH: Live From the World Cup Protests

“VICE News’ Tim Pool is live from downtown Rio de Janeiro where protesters, dissatisfied with what they see as the misuse of public funds in organizing the World Cup, have taken to the streets.”

New York Times – A Piece of the Game Beyond the Walls: Brazilian Prisoners Manufacture Soccer Balls

“I’d rather be playing with the footballs than making them,” said Alves, 31, who is serving a five-year sentence for drug trafficking. He added with a rueful laugh, “I’m in the same field, at least.”

APB for immediate release-Be on the lookout for one Chad Haber, svengali husband, grifter and partner in crime with failed GOP Senate candidate, grifter, recently indicted Dr Annette Bosworth of South Dakota. She goes in front of a Grand Jury on Tuesday. He,for some inexplicable reason, decided to take their three children and vacation in Alaska, although they are said to be penniless andf homeless. Haber should be facing indictment as well as their former personal attorney for election peteition fraud and perjury. Just like Snowgrift Snoozie,Haber and Bosworth are prone to tossing ex-friends and associates under the bus. Do not take any wooden nickels from this guy.

Obama is sending 300 military advisers to Iraq-Green Berets,Rangers and Seals. Uh-oh. That is the way we got involved in VietNam,after Ikenhower declared the US would not allow North and South VietNam to become one country.

Speaking of national news – I just went to The Washington Post and found this on the front page:

    Wis. Gov. Walker
    is suspected in
    ‘criminal scheme’

Here’s the first paragraph of the article:

Wisconsin prosecutors have alleged that Gov. Scott Walker was part of a wide-ranging “criminal scheme” to coordinate the activities of conservative groups that spent millions to help him and other Republicans fend off recall efforts, according to documents released Thursday.

Local news for me – maybe national for some:

I hope that Dan Synder (the big jerk) changes the name of the Washington Redskins to the Washington Red Hawks or something like it. Hey! It would be SUPER EASY to change the song too!

I admit it, I’m not a football fan. I don’t care who wins or loses. Football season for my husband = unlimited trail riding for me, my friends and our horses. The only NFL game I attended was back when Art Monk was playing (we won tickets in a raffle – it WAS fun to be there and it was a good game to watch) so that gives you an idea of my disinterest in the game and my vintage.

Not every tradition should continue. Change the name.

Thanks for the info. About tw0 weeks ago I saw an article about Walker trying to cut a deal in the so called “John Doe” investigations. Walker has always scoffed at allegations he knew what his staff was up to. Hope they nail his mangy hide to the wall.

If you have the time, this article gives a good indication of how wingnut appointed judges protect wingnut pols in court cases. Randa ordered the John Doe investigation stopped and oredered all evidence be immediately destroyed. He was overturned on appeal within hours.

That and the links in it made for a very interesting read.
        Thanks mikey!

Looks like Europe is expecting to get tar sands from KXL pipeline even though “experts” claim the stuff will be refined in ‘murrica for ‘murricans. What a bunch of liars.

  5. mike from iowa says:

Wingnuts in congress are ripping Obama over his Iraq policy. Hell, they rip him because he is alive and Black.

  6. Alaska Pi says:

I didn’t miss most of it . Yech. I need a weekend off from this stuff.

Declining salmon runs -esp in western Alaska- as may or may not be related to federal fisheries policies in federal waters off the coast need to stay front and center

    http://www.deltadiscovery.com/story/2014/06/11/speak-your-mind/western-alaska-groups-call-for-emergency-action-on-salmon-bycatch/2183.html

even if it all makes my stomach churn and blood pressure raise…

  7. mike from iowa says:

Wingnuts have their knickers in a twist over the timing of the capture of Beghazi ringleader. At least one has suggested the FBI and special forces are conspiring to elect H.C. as potus. Can-CuTex Cruz asks why we didn’t prevent it from happening. I don’t recal;lsimilar lamenting after 9-11 by these nutjobs.

  8. Zyxomma says:

That’s pretty comprehensive. I’d have mentioned the earthquakes, but they were small enough for the locals to shrug off. Thanks, Zach.

  9. AKMagpie says:

Thanks, Zach. That is pretty comprehensive. It will take me a while to read through all your linkys.
