ADN (Alaska Dispatch News) – Alaska newspaper gets new name, new mission

Some of you will be understandably surprised as you pick up your Sunday newspaper. It looks similar, but the name has changed. The Anchorage Daily News has now become Alaska Dispatch News.

The EPA has released a “Proposed Determination” as to how it plans to exercise its authority under the Clean Water Act, Section 404(c), regarding the development of the Pebble Mine in the Bristol Bay region of southwest Alaska. Le’t be clear – the EPA is not proposing that construction of the Pebble Mine be prohibited. It is merely proposing that it be limited in scope.

Washington Post – Meet Executive Order 12333: The Reagan rule that lets the NSA spy on Americans

In March I received a call from the White House counsel’s office regarding a speech I had prepared for my boss at the State Department. The speech was about the impact that the disclosure of National Security Agency surveillance practices would have on U.S. Internet freedom policies.

Washington Post – Photos: Central American migrants on the Train of Death, searching for a new life

The surge of Central American children traveling alone that has overwhelmed U.S. border facilities is part of an exodus I’ve been documenting for the past five years. I wanted to create a portrait of the people who make this epic journey and the hardships they endure along the way.

    http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/mmcfeeley/ohio_fracking_spill_highlights.html

Officials had to wait up to five days to find out what some fracking chemicals were in massive spill in OHIO. Haliburton didn’t bother to disclose the names of all chemicals.

I just love me some wingnuts and Dems that go along with this shit.

    Ms Pi- http://madvilletimes.com/2014/07/aclu-helping-tribes-fight-icwa-violations-in-south-dakota-foster-care/

The former judge,Davis, is trying to prevent release of documents because he claims they can be used to cause him embarassment.. Gotta weigh this carefully. Hmmm……protect parental/family rights or a pissant judge’s rep? Tough call.

    • mike from iowa says:

I may have made a mistake in naming Davis,it may have been a different judge involved. Correction for the day.

    • Alaska Pi says:

You didn’t make a mistake , mikey. The doof seems to think his appearance more important than whether the law was followed- which is what unsealing all those 48 hr hearings is/was about. The doof is also the one who ignored the imperative to follow the ICWA from first contact with the “system”.

I fear benlomond 2 and Mag the Mick have dried up and blown away in their respective droughts. I’m guessing you won’t be getting dehydrated anythings from California anytime soon, dang it. 🙂

        • Alaska Pi says:

I’m missing Mag terribly also too but know that benlomond is recovering from a family wedding and that we’ll hear from him before too very long.
If we don’t , I’ll email him directly and send him a terrible joke or something 🙂
He won’t be able to resist sending a terribler one back 😉

          • mike from iowa says:

Hope your terrible jokes bring ben as much joy as your wit and wisdom brings me. till,I find it hard to believe that a family wedding could be of more importance than haranguing someone from iowa he’s never met. Color me befuddled. :)) (had most of my whiskers hcked off and discovered another chin)

          • Alaska Pi says:

Oh Mag- if you’re out there, you have to listen to this!
How in the world do they manage the horns and everything they do here??! 😀

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/07/24/us-usa-execution-arizona-idUSKBN0FT1BS20140724

Another day, another botched execution. Where were we? Oh yeah, the argument is now whether a two hour execution is cruel and unusual(it is unusual as this is the first two hour long execution recorded) or if the condemned should kiss the state’s ass for allowing him to hold on for an extra two hours to his miserable life.

    • Alaska Pi says:

that /this makes me sick to my stomach.
Alaska doesn’t have the death penalty- thank heavens.
doesn’t stop folks from flooding news stories with the kill-em! crap after an arrest.
      bleah

  4. mike from iowa says:

Good ol’ wingnut sinator Whorin Atch of Ewetah wants to rewrite tax laws so korporate off shore profits are not subjected to taxes by America. Wonder how much new tax revenue this idea will bring in?

  5. Alaska Pi says:

Zach- you missed a rilly big Alaska story.
    http://www.adn.com/article/20140718/supreme-court-affirms-tribal-courts-authority-case-man-convicted-beating-girlfriend
For anyone who has time, the new ADN/bigger AK Dispatch/whatever is doing what the old ADN did so well- there’s a link to the State Supreme Court ruling . It is very readable and contrary to the endless horsepunky some of the commenters on the story seem to think, very clear about what and why this ruling was made.
    Important and big story!!
The FBX Craigslist R&R story in the new Dispatch made me sick. As did most of the comments.
Somebody want to splain why all these outfits think having Facebook commenting will raise the quality of discourse? I sure see a lot of stinko, rude, disgusting stuff which folks seem very happy to put their rill names on…

  6. mike from iowa says:

Let’s see how bad Pebble wants to rape Alaska. Make them post a 50 trillion dollar non-refundable bond,up front, before they set foot in Alaska. And put Parnell’s ass on the line,as well.

    • Zyxomma says:

Great suggestion! Since corporations are prone to privatize the profits, and socialize the losses (including, but not limited to, environmental destruction), this would be the way to go.
