Carpetbagger Flees Fish

kodiakharbor

I’m guessing that Dan Sullivan was the kind of kid who “stayed home sick” when he forgot to study for a test.

Because he just did that. He declined to attend the candidate debate on fisheries in Kodiak. That’s like declining to attend your phD dissertation, or declining to attend your wedding rehearsal dinner, or a Presidential candidate declining to attend the foreign policy debate. It isn’t done.

The reason that isn’t done is because this is a candidate’s opportunity to prove he or she is credible. If you’re running for Senate,  this is your big chance to prove that even though fisheries is a complicated issue, you’ve done your homework and you are ready to go to Washington DC and fight for the biggest industry in the state.

The difference between the kid that fake coughs and touches the thermometer to the lightbulb before his mom comes back to read the numbers is that Sullivan and his campaign didn’t even bother to try to make it sound good. They’re either that disrespectful, or that clueless. You pick.

Sullivan campaign manager Ben Sparks told debate organizers that Sullivan does not have a prior commitment keeping him from the fisheries debate, but that “he is just too busy with all the traveling he is doing.”

That’s right boys and girls, the guy who wants to be your next Senator is just too busy with all that traveling. Weirdly, the guy who already has the Senate job AND is running a campaign has plenty of time to be there.

“I can’t recall a time that a candidate has not participated in the Kodiak debate,” Begich said as he readied to head back to Washington, D.C., on Friday. “It’s a must-do for statewide candidates. It’s not an option. It’s clear he doesn’t have the same Alaska values as we do when it comes to our fisheries, and I think he is doing an incredible disservice to Alaskans. But that is his MO. He avoids issues, only shows up at very controlled settings, and talks in bumper stickers and applause lines, and that’s all he likes to do.”

Touché.

If we were charitable, we’d forgive Ohio Dan his ignorance about the 49th state. I hear they don’t have many fish in Cleveland.

basicvally protecting the hfisheries is very important to alaska. so why dont we put a Preposition declaring the area a reserve? Since a monument isnt going to happen – the watershed is 40000 sq nmiles and monuments are limited to 5000 acres(less than 8 miles) it would take 5000 uses of the Antiquities Act to protect the Watershed. Now if the Dems managed to take the House and Hold the Senate then a bill could be Proposed setting the area aside permanently. Perhaps as part of the Park Services centennial…

It’s been a while since i commented here at the flats. I will try to stop by more often.
Who in their right mind would not be part of a debate on fisheries in Alaska and expect to be elected. Well i guess if you already know the election is bought and paid for.

Sullivan was diagnosed with icky-trickydicky-phobia,an insane fear of fish that look like Dick Nixon when deformed by Pebble Mine’s chemical wastes(Frankenfish) and causes one to run from any exposure to same. Only know cure is to place infected person in carpetbag and send back to Ohio post haste.

  4. Mo says:

I still say our Republicans will vote for him no matter what. Even if he is a carpetbagger from Ohio.

      Absolutely.
      Completely.

      Disgusting, but so true.

Prove me wrong Alaska. I’d really, really like to be wrong on this.
I might even do some kind of grovelly I’msorryithoughty’allweresuchshortsightedasshats kinda dealie. rilly.

Carpetbagger Dan is hoping for the clueless kohring kind of voter to get him elected.

Someone over on Amanda’s blog keeps calling him “L48 Dan”. Cracks me up every time I see it.

‘an honestly say that money makes it okay to trade two resources for one.”

“If the people vote no on Pebble,it will not be built……but we at Pebble don’t recognize the people, therefore their votes don’t count.”

“Rilly folks,I have better things to do than debate fish.”

  7. Moose Pucky says:

Carpetbagger Sullivan already demonstrated, as Parnell’s head of DNR, that he has no respect for the input of Alaskans or the issues (fisheries) that are important to them.

Hard to believe folks would prefer such an industry hack over Sen. Begich who actually listens to Alaksans, responds to their concerns, and makes healthy, sustainable fisheries a top priority for Alaska.

  8. AlaskaCodPiece says:

Turns out the Dan Sullivan clan is very involved with fish in Cleveland.

Ohio Magazine has a big article about a fish business in Cleveland called Navillus (Sullivan spelled backwards) that is hugely successful and sells….wait for it….farmed Atlantic salmon! Not an Alaska salmon in the place.

DNR Dan wouldn’t know a salmon from a codfish – worse, he doesn’t give a shit.

Unthinkable? How about Gov. Andrew Cuomo REFUSING to debate Zephyr Teachout, his primary challenger? I voted Teachout/Wu today. They had no money, so I’d be shocked if they won, but I feel good about my vote. Cuomo is WAY too business-friendly, and won’t commit to no fracking. There’s a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing for natural gas, and we keep telling him we CAN’T trade our water for gas, but if he’s re-elected (likely), we may be the next state to destroy our water for more fossil fuel.
