Palin, the Pipeline, and Exxon

Rumors were circulating last night, but it looks like its going to be official. Palin tweeted about her conversations with Alaska’s congressional delegation and the need to flow Alaska’s gas to “hungry markets,” and guess who’s going to help?

The pipeline company TransCanada announced today that it has an agreement with Exxon Mobil Corporation to work together on an natural gas pipeline from Alaska to the Lower 48.

“We are pleased that TransCanada and ExxonMobil have reached agreement on initial project terms to progress this exciting initiative,” Hal Kvisle, TransCanada president and chief executive officer, said in a written statement.

Rep. Mike Hawker (R) is quoted in the ADN politics blog (linked above) as saying the whole announcement at noon today will be an “overblown media circus” and that Exxon will basically be hired as a subcontractor.

More after the announcement.

    Why don’t the folks at Exxon gets some cajones and call Palin a liar instead of just suggesting that that is what she is?

I come from a fishing family, and when we have bon fire we end up toasting the memory of a few great Alaskans, my husband has taken to toasting Scully the pilot that landed in the Hudson River….during the course of the evening someone in the family starts it and before to long everyone standing around the fire shouts F*ck Exxon….just once or twice, then we move on ..but it feels good..Palin does not care about the people of Alaska, she shows us that time and time again…

    Judge orders immediate release of Kott, Kohring

    U.S. District Judge John Sedwick put more urgency this morning into the release from prison of two former state legislators, directing corrections officials to immediately set them free and U.S. marshals to give them plane tickets back to Alaska.

    The new orders, filed in U.S. District Court, expand on orders Sedwick issued Wednesday to the U.S. Marshals Service that it arrange for the return to Alaska of former Reps. Pete Kott and Vic Kohring “as soon as reasonably possible.”

  12. Kris says:

    Having some inside knowledge of the TransCanada side of things…to everyone thinking TransCanada doesn’t have the money, yeah right…they’re loaded. They needed a partnership with a US company to be able to get this off the ground for the US (Alaska) to have the confidence that they aren’t going to take everything and run, in the end demanindg unreasonable expectations. Of COURSE Exxon is the one…they unfortunately are the only one right now with the big bucks to do it in state. ConocoPhillips is laying people off (major problemos there), BP wouldn’t have touched this with a sharp stick (they want to do their own pipeline anyways hence their new company “Denali”). Don’t even get me started with Palin and her “plans”…what an idiot.

    K.

  13. Isabella says:

    By writing the rules in a way that excluded the oil companies from the process, Palin—although she gained the short-term approval-rating points that made her seem attractive to McCain last summer—all but assured that the “largest private-sector infrastructure project in North America” would never be anything more than her personal field of dreams.

    Meg, must have had Van Phlegm, send another letter or something.

    BTW, Palin, knows she did not grab the brass ring on this one. She is Twittering like her life depends on positive press for this one.

    I went to Tweet Mark Begich, an ass kisser message but his account has not been active since November.

    She’s got to be kidding.

    This should never be laid to rest or forgotten. It should be brought up, shouted from the hilltops every single time she runs for any public office. She should be dirtied with this decision repeatedly until she is unrecognizable.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I guess I can say this b/c Gryphen already did last week. Dennis’s iceberg is different from what Gryphen is working on and doesn’t involve babygate.
    Something else. I don’t know, what, when, but Dennis (if you look at his site) is very, very much against corruption!!! Also Phil has something interesting posted at his site:
    “The announcement today in the Texas media that Exxon-Mobil and Trans-Canada are working with Palin on a deal that might bulldoze Denali – BP/Conoco-Phillips’ plan – will dominate Alaska media for a good week or so, unless the volcano blows again, or the “Feds,” as Palin calls them, get back into doing what nobody else here seems to want to do – bust political crooks.”
    so what did Scarah do, what did she give into? she had told the legs nearing the end of the session she was willing to be more flexible and look at restructuring the tax part of it? did she do something like that this late in the game just to save face? hell, if she was going to bend over she could have done this a LONG time ago.
  25. Doggonit says:
    To me it sounds like TransCanada is having money problems and doesn’t have the funds to pay Exxon for some preliminary work required in the contract and therefore Exxon is providing some funds and subcontract work in exchange for some ownership in the company.
    Both companies are not making much of the deal because of SEC rules.
    Obviously politicians are spinning it for political gain although it means nothing as far as actually getting a pipe line built.
    How many billions have they had to pay out lately to Alaskans and the fact they didn’t do any exploration on a piece of land they have leased for years?
    Exxon is P.O.ed, AGIA was going full steam (not realizing they are helping out the probelm) on the LNG pipeline to you all in the lower 48. And Alaskans are going to get the shaft.
    nice.
    **
    have you heard anything about a “split off” or what we call a spurr line lately?
    Nope.. and they (as in the oil producers) aren’t going to try either.
    AGIA is Dead!
    Sarah Palin’s failed AGIA plan is dead. TransCanada is “negotiating” with Exxon. Story here. Do we get our $500 million back, or was this the original plan for Palin to get into bed with Exxon?
    ?????????
  44. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:
    why is Begich kissing her A$$? to look like a good soldier? because Ted Stevens criticized him for dropping the ball on ANWR?
  45. Isabella says:
    This will not be an Alaska windfall. In the short term or long haul. I am seeing no gloating anyone made a demand a certain percentage of workforce must be AK residents. What will happen, like when B.P. brings people in, is the cost of living will go sky high, especially in metro area.
    When we were at Marriott, B.P. new hires would stay as they were relocating. These individuals were outbidding each other on houses up to half a million dollars. Once the welders, engineers, service people come and raise the costs, they will leave after their part is done.
    Too bad Palin, muddied up her week with cries of rape or she would be able to sit pretty on this screw you to Alaska for a month.
  46. BooBooBear says:
    Gee…..wasn’t it not that long ago that the Queen told EXXON that she hoped the door didn’t not hit them in the ^%$ on their way out? Or something along those lines. She was hell bent to make something…anything happen during her reign. Legislators were saying secretly two weeks ago to watch for a bogus announcement coming out. I guess this would be it. So….let’s figure this deal out.
  47. UK Lady says:
    I wish that Andrew Halcro was still blogging, I would love to hear what he has to say about this.
  48. jo in AK says:
    Sarah went to bed with Exxon. Yes, this is her child, again.
  49. Isabella says:
    Begich also seemed to make peace with Palin, after complaining recently that he had seen little progress on the project — and had been asked by the White House about its status.
    “ExxonMobil has always been considered the ‘big gorilla’ necessary for this project to succeed, so their willingness to get involved and make a substantial financial investment is warmly welcomed,” Begich said. “Congratulations to the Palin administration for their persistence in helping get Exxon and TransCanada together in this partnership.”
    He added that it will be up to the state legislature to
    “take the gas line project to the next steps. I believe any Alaska gas line project must provide gas to Alaskans and other benefits, such as jobs and a fair share of revenues, to our citizens.”
  50. AKjah says:
    Bent over by Exxon. Slapped in the face by Scarah.
  51. short-timer says:
    I’m glad the ADN quoted Mike Hawker. I hope they continue to let him weigh in on this issue as a “reality check.” Now that Andrew Halcro has capped his pen, Alaska really needs someone to keep it real.
  52. Isabella says:
    Ripley in CT “Shame (again) on GINO. Exxon has no business being involved making more money off the backs and land of Alaskans.”
    They just made back their civil payouts. Exxon, not only did NOT get punished for the Valdez Spill…they are making a profit.
  53. Ripley in CT says:
    Shame (again) on GINO. Exxon has no business being involved making more money off the backs and land of Alaskans.
  54. Isabella says:
    Not for threats but seriously, Palin, has ventured into hostile territory. With the puny checks Exxon recently distributed, coupled with her blatant disregard for Alaska future & desperate Alaskans seeing no way out for the next two years.
  55. Paula says:
    So, how many zillions of years will this pipeline take until it actually passes any gas? Or will the US, by then, be powered by sun and wind? All that pipeline to power our lawnmowers?
