Alaska

ADN – ADN poll: Alaskans like Trump, Sanders for president

An Alaska Dispatch News poll found registered voters in the state have their eyes on two candidates that would have been considered unlikely front-runners just a year ago: real estate billionaire and reality TV star Donald Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the self-proclaimed democratic socialist.

The Guardian – The rise and fall of Sarah Palin: plucked away from Alaska, she lost her soul

There was a time when Sarah Palin was normal by Alaska standards. Way back before the hoopla, and way before she endorsed Donald Trump, she made sense as a politician here. That’s not the case any more. I’m told she lives in Alaska most of the time, but she’s invisible in public life.

NY Times – A Canadian Threat to Alaskan Fishing

FROM fall through spring, the fleet of commercial fishing boats here in the panhandle of Alaska stalk winter king salmon. In the mornings prisms of ice sparkle beneath the sodium lights of the docks, where I live on a World War II tugboat with my wife and 8-month-old daughter. This winter I’ve been out a few times fishing on the I Gotta, catching pristine wild salmon, torpedoes of muscle. But the work is slow, five fish a day, and my skipper recently traveled down to Reno, Nev., for knee surgery.

National

Washington Post – Trial to start in lawsuit over North Carolina’s voter-ID law

Rosanell Eaton still remembers the day 70 years ago when she traveled two hours with her mother in a mule-drawn wagon to register to vote at the county courthouse. Before she could, she was forced to take a literacy test.

Vice News – New York’s Billionaire Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg Might Run for President in 2016

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire former mayor of New York City, has reportedly told his aides to draw up plans for an independent campaign for the US presidency.

TPM – Sheriff: Shootout At Gun Shop Over A $25 Fee Leaves 2 Dead

Mississippi authorities say a gun shop owner and his 17-year-old son died in a shootout over a $25 service charge. Another man and his 29-year-old son are hospitalized.

International

The Guardian – Asylum seekers made to wear coloured wristbands in Cardiff

Asylum seekers in Cardiff are being issued with brightly coloured wristbands that they must wear at all times, in a move which echoes the “red door” controversy in Middlesbrough and has resulted in their harassment and abuse by members of the public.

CBS – 8 may face jail time for breaking King Tut’s beard

Eight Egyptians involved in a botched repair of the famed golden burial mask of King Tut, which was corrected late last year, have been referred to trial for “gross negligence.”

Fusion – “Basic” has a whole new meaning at Davos

Every January a bunch of of rich, powerful, self-unaware people get together in Davos, Switzerland, to talk about economic problems that they’re not very good at solving. Then they go to swanky parties and ski.
