National Park Service Hosting Catch a Parkie-Pine 5K Fun Run and Centennial Birthday Party in August

FAIRBANKS, AK: The National Park Service (NPS) is hosting a family-friendly “Catch a Parkie-Pine”5K fun run on Saturday, August 27 at 10:00 am as part of the celebration of this year’s NPS Centennial. Participants of all ages are invited to run, walk, or jog their way along the trails of the Tanana Lakes Recreation Area (off South Cushman Street), and earn a prize by capturing a flag from a runner dressed as a “parkie-pine”.

You don’t have to be in the fun run to attend the free NPS 100th birthday celebration, which is open to all and begins at 11:30 am at the finish line. There will be games, hands-on activities provided by the NPS and community organizations, and of course birthday

cake. The National Park Service will also be issuing the “Every Kid in a Park Pass” to 4th graders, which provides free entrance for them and their family to National Parks for one year. Denali is the only national park in Alaska that charges an entrance fee.

Catch A Parkie-Pine fun run registration is available at www.npsfamily5K.com. Call 907-459-3730 for additional information.

All proceeds from the race will benefit Pierce Park, a borough park planned for development.
