Open Thread – Watson the Wonder Dog

OK, you all know that I love Buf the dog. In my eye, she’s the greatest dog on Earth. However, tonight, I’ve got to give the Dog of the Week Award to my second favorite dog in the world – Watson.

Watson had had enough of those red signs tonight, and finally had to let his feelings be known.

ord14

Will try to catch up on the news tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy the open thread. I’ve been pretty preoccupied for the last couple of days. Anything I should know about?

Isabella–we try to be polite, direct them to the Mansion when they’re all the way over in our neighborhood, tell them how to find the grocery store and the museums and such, but every once in a while my (not-so-)inner snark comes out. Happened last week, not that I was totally mean about “her” but it was prob. borderline. The spouse is always much more polite, but he worked at a museum for 3 summers and in generally nicer than I am anyway! 😉 By the end of Sept. we’re REALLY ready for them to be gone.

I have had loads of fun with visiting mudpups though!

    Home damaged by fire

KNIK — Central Mat-Su and West Lakes Fire Departments avoided a disaster when responding to a house fire at Mile 12 of Knik-Goose Bay Road Wednesday.

The fire was blowing out of the house and flames were covering an above-ground fuel tank, Steele said. Without Central Mat-Su’s new tanker and its front-mounted turret that spays foam, the fire could have been much larger.

“It was unknown if it was occupied when we arrived,” Central Mat-Su chief James Steele said, Wednesday. “Forty percent of the house was involved in flames.”

JOHN BORLAND/www.morffed.com Mat-Su firefighters John Beebe and Tim Gonyea retreat from the roof after a successful vertical ventilation in the roof at a house fire Wednesday at Mile 12 of Knik-Goose Bay Road.

The fire crews did their primary search for victims and sounded the initial all-clear. Further efforts were delayed because a live electrical wire ran straight from a transformer into the house.

As soon as that was disconnected, the firefighters proceeded to seek out and extinguish the fire that was hiding in the home made up of multiple add-ons.

Firefighters told Steele there were two roofs in the back section of the house, one built on top of another. They said it looked like the fire was trapped in-between the two.

hmmmm….at 5:30 I was thinking I might have to tinkle but it was still dark and I didn’t want to chance a trip to the bathroom.
Also it was raining (that might have cause the tinkle urge) and rain beating on a metal roof just makes one want to sleep…
But eventually I had to get up and go to work. Fortunately, I’m a telecommuter and can work in my PJs…commute is bedroom, to bathroom, to coffee pot, to computer.
I don’t have a basement, so I’m an elitist upstairs PJ blogger.

Rep. Bob Lynn: ethics complaints should be dismissed if discussed

    JUNE 18, 2009 – 3:38 PM

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

Anchorage Republican Rep. Bob Lynn, a supporter of Gov. Sarah Palin’s, said he’s going to introduce a bill to stop ethics complaints against the governor or members of her staff from being publicly discussed unless the state finds

  42. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:

Injuneau…….ah yes a territory, then it’s no wonder why Scarah want’s to claim VP power over the congress…….

PS – see, ya gotta explain her political reasoning to us in the lower 48, when she used the term territory in recent interviews it makes one wonder, why would she say that, but ah yes.

“The Constitution of the United States states[4],

“the congress shall have power to dispose of, and make all needful rules and regulations respecting the territory or other property of the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be construed, so as to preclude the claims of the United States or of any state.” – Article IV”

  43. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:

so what the heck is this all about…….leases, Obama admin., flurry of letters, inaccuracies, science, natives, age old studies……..I think this needs to be watched and looked into!

this caught my eye…..”The borough is the closest local government to the offshore zone considered most prospective for exploratory drilling.”

    http://www.adn.com/money/industries/oil/story/834922.html

Borough hesitates backing Bristol Bay petroleum leases

ALEUTIANS EAST: Support is key to allowing federal sale in the area.

“Lately, however, the borough’s relationship with MMS has become strained, raising the possibility that a friend might turn against the controversial lease sale.

The evidence is a flurry of letters the borough sent to MMS officials in March questioning the agency’s approach on preparations for the sale, including the drafting of an environmental impact statement.

The letters complain of poor scheduling, inadequate baseline research to document the sale area’s commercially important fish and crab resources, lack of information on the different sale alternatives MMS is planning, and lack of federal funding to cover travel and other costs so borough residents can participate meaningfully in the planning process.”

“Poor progress on dozens of fishery, air, oceanographic, oil spill and other studies the borough believes are necessary. One borough letter complains the MMS offered a 21-year-old study of seismic noise impacts on Dungeness crab larvae, when what is really needed is a study of potential seismic impacts on Bristol Bay’s valuable king and Tanner crab.”

You can do the same search on others, voter registration cards and DMV records in Oregon use to be fully accessible. No, I was not stalking anyone that time, someone was trying to find me. Common sense should have halted the practice of anyone anywhere paying $5 for someones personal identification.

“Isabella–WOW, what a family you have!”
They are all eccentric, my fathers mother, wow. My mothers mother, worse. She thought she could do anything she wanted then buy her way to Heaven.

Is your bro still in the USCG?

He went in at 20 and gained rank so quick he had some award for making officer before 10 years. Within 15, I forget how it went, he was going to go into a position that only a senator or some sort could take you out of.

I haven’t talked to him in eight years. He was stationed in Homer, while I lived there about five years ago & when his wife saw me at the store they transferred to Sitka, within a week. I know he moved to California and as payback for tormenting our dad I turned him in for fraudulently collecting PFDS out of state. Not nice, I know.

The jerk, he abandoned my dad accusing him of killing our mother after she died of Cancer. We use to live in Ohio, when we were pre-teen/teens, considerably well off. My dad started protesting government, refused to work with taxes withheld. We got ran out of town, literally. Small town, small minds.

We ended up in Yakima picking fruit for a year when my mom fell ill. She never said she was sick, must have been really bad for months, we didn’t know until she fell one night and was taken to the hospital. They gave her less then two weeks to live. My dad sold everything we had taking her to Mexico for treatments not approved in U.S.. She lingered 5 months.

My brother was upset HIS life was deterred. Anyway he stayed in California and my dad, younger brother & I moved to Oregon. Jeff, his name, would show up about every six months to tell my dad how much he hated him.

Fast forward a few years, my younger brother was killed in a car crash (Long story about how his former girlfriends mother had a crush on him) result was my brother one day was painting Christmas themes on his ex
girlfriends mothers “Bank” windows (While she watched salivating) for Charity for their school. The girl, who had no right to be driving was. She reached for her cell phone, crossed the center line. She of course escaped with maybe a bruise. He sustained a massive head injury, never regaining consciousness.

We contacted my older brother after tracking him through the Coast Guard. Discovered he had been in a crash, of his own, a month before, revived, unable to travel. Pretty messed up.

My dad died a year after my younger brother, grief.

The settlement from my younger brothers wrongful death went to my dads estate that went to us and Jeff, refused to allow my fathers wish of a sizable amount to be put into an art scholarship in younger brothers name.

He probably bought a car with it the S*O*B*.

I Googled searched him a few months ago, his wife is trying to wash her bad karma by volunteering with brain injured trauma victims. He I see is golfing his a s s off in San Fran.

“BTW, as an adult you now need a passport to cross the border too…”
Thanks, I did not know. The Stampede is in two weeks. Not enough time to get everything together. Kindof thought we would go there instead of Portland. Guees not.

    Lol, June.

No joke my father was as anti government as one could be and still be considered sane. He did tried to get me not to document my sons birth. No birth record, certificate, my gosh loved the man more then anything but he drove ME crazy. I sincerely screwed my own taxes for my first several years as a teen working because he taught me nothing about filing returns.

Currently we have moved around so much in the past three years from hotels, hospitals, etc…I don’t have one for my daughter nearby. I should probably send off for a copy now before I actually need it.

My brother, several years ago had at least seven fake ID’s. Back when birth certificates could be obtained by anyone and were not stamped deceased…my brother would locate a child who passed by age one, send for the birth certificate then DMV an identification. One day riding with him he was pulled over, the same cop had him on another traffic violation a couple weeks earlier. My brother panicked told me not to speak or call him by name….too bad the cop relented when questioning his name being different from previous contact.

A month or so later he was traveling to Canada to for something lost his wallet, freaked out cause he had all ID’s in his wallet. SMART HUH?Hehehehe, he came back home stressed for a long time until he found it snuggled in the care seat.

And, no way…I do not support what he did….I stopped talking to him years ago. Scary, he made himself one of the highest ranking officers at the youngest age in the Coast Guard.

Palin has admitted that there are still boxes of letters & gifts (or mail as she calls it) going back to 2008 that remain unopened, and so they don’t consider them “received” until they are actually opened. This just astounds me because if she chooses not to run for Governor again, then she could conceivably just leave those “gifts” unopened until then and not have to claim them in any way, shape or form.

Unfortunately, POSSESSION is the problem now. If these things are in her home/office, she can’t wait to report them. Simply not opening something doesn’t cut the mustard.. Also…what about postmarks on packages? Those would undoubtedly help nail the date(s) she failed to timely file her disclosure forms on “gifts”.

I looked into this myself a few months ago, and yes, apparently Palin could receive a 12,000 dollar gift from every man, woman and child in the U.S.

If I did my math correctly, that would amount to about 4 trillion dollars that Palin could receive tax free. I’m not sure if people elsewhere in the world could jump on the bandwagon too.

Because of Alaska’s gift laws, the Department of Law may choose to not allow this, but on the other hand perhaps they’d say it is o.k. . . .

Ironically she’s not having huge success with her PAC’s fundraising. Suffice it to say she’s not getting trillions of dollars.

Redcorp Ventures Ltd. and a subsidiary, Redfern Resources, had planned to clean up acid leaking from the 1950s-era Tulsequah Chief mine as it redeveloped the site. Why did it take CANADA to order a clean up in Alaska?

and note how long this has been going on since the 1990’s also note that it is hurting salmon fishing, and note what a company say’s when they conveniently go under. The environment and humans are the one’s left holding the toxic bag, the damage is done. Now, was that worth $ and jobs? Look at Libby, MT.

It could very well be Embassy suites in is the same. The contract was up.

Advertisers don’t advertise on the same shows forever. It gets old and ineffective. They rotate around. I’m sure even more with the economy bad and their budgets tight.

Now who would be promoting that these companies pulled their advertising because of Letterman’s jokes? Could it be the same people that counted the number of protesters as 50 rather than 15? (Although if you read it carefully, they say 50 people were there; they didn’t specify that 35 of them were there as media reporting on the 15 that were there to protest. You really have to watch the fine print with the wingnuts.)

  104. mlaiuppa says:

Oh, boy. More nails in Palin’s coffin.

You don’t mess with the IRS. And she isn’t going to be able to WATB her way out of this one.

  105. CO almost native says:

Regarding any checks and/or cash gifts to Palin: Once they are received via USPS or other service, they are considered hers by the IRS; it doesn’t matter if she didn’t open the letters- the sender has already claimed the donation to her.
She can put them anywhere she pleases, but they are still gifts- unless Palin sends them back, and requests the donor rewrite a check to a charity/nonprofit, in her name. The donation then goes to the check writer. The IRS is very strict on this- Palin has to claim the gifts for tax purposes, then she can reduce her tax burden by making a charitable donation (and no, her PAC or Legal Trust does not qualify).

I hope Alaska is strict also, and doesn’t roll over and play dead (sorry, Watson).

  106. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:

why do I get the feeling Scarah and her new AG are very pro pebble mine.

mlaiuppa “Embassy Suites and Olive Garden. Oh, that is so going to hurt David Letterman. Could be they’re just tightening their advertising budget and using this as a way to score points.”

Didn’t I read here return Emails from Embassy, to concerned Mudpups, say they did not pull ads in protest they have advertisements as publicity in rotation and the time came to promote elsewhere?

  109. mlaiuppa says:

    And oh look:

“The Olive Garden media schedule is planned months in advance. The schedule for the Late Show with David Letterman was completed earlier this month. We take all guest concerns seriously. And, as always, we will factor those concerns in as we plan our advertising schedule in the future,” he continued.

So, seems I was right. The contract was finished before the brouhaha. Whether they advertise or not will have more to do with their budget and returns. With Letterman’s viewership UP, that’s more exposure.

  110. mlaiuppa says:

If she hasn’t cashed them, they are not income.

She may have difficulty redirecting them if they are addressed personally to her. She can’t simply sign them and then put them in her PAC. They would have to be addressed to the PAC.

If they are addressed to her, she should have sent them back so the person can either void them and write a new check to the PAC…or keep the money to buy food due to the downturn in the economy.

Embassy Suites and Olive Garden. Oh, that is so going to hurt David Letterman. Could be they’re just tightening their advertising budget and using this as a way to score points.

The Embassy Suites was only advertising on the CBS website. I have no idea where Olive Garden ads are. I’ve never seen them on Letterman. But then, I’ve only recently begun taping. I’m sure there are plenty of other restaurants ready to step in to fill the void.

ADN is reporting Palin doesn’t want to disclose the Arctic cat discount Todd got. Shes written a letter asking for an exemption.

Palin explains that if you take the retail price, then subtract the discount, then you get the manufacturer’s cost, and we promised not to reveal that.

So, if she reveals the discount, then applies the formula she just told everybody about, then anyone can figure out the secret they promised not to reveal.

    Dear IRS

I request not to reveal my income this year because my Income minus 37263 is an amount of money I paid to Rod Blagojevich, and I promised him I would not reveal that.

I value my promise to Rod Blagojevich more than I want to reveal my income to you.

So, I’d appreciate it if we could just skip it this year.

    Thanks,
    DrChill

SP could be manipulated to do their bidding (due to her lack of substance, her lack of smarts, and her vanity) – BUT – GINO’s personality is coming out big time. She is a drama queen, who thrives on tabloid coverage. She creates major negative DRAMA wherever she goes. This will not do! She will “go all rogue” on them,” and her instability is playing out for them to see. I think even they will distance themelves. If only she had been able to portray some semblance of mental stability, she would have been a very useful idiot (due to her “charisma”).

I believe the ax is falling as we speak. (Crossing fingers and toes) GOP is in a downward spiral and until Palin, proved last week without a doubt she is uncontrollable with an unstable base there was hope she could draw voters and their money to the party.

I am curious about the new A. G. He is without question a plant. I am betting for the pipeline deal to get pushed through since Palin’s frauds will deter the contract with investigations.

Did you notice the original request for Palin, to produce a contract was sent April 29th, yet she just responded, June 15th? She seemed to have gotten away without any reply until this blow out in New York. She fcks up big time & all the sudden there is a new Attorney General along with a demand for disclosure. Makes one hopeful.

Yes, you are allowed to accept a “gift”, but I think there are some strings on it.

It can’t be a ‘business’ gift that recurs every year. Because that’s income. The gift exemption is supposed to be for family giving to family or friends. Todd is essentially an employee and he’s receiving goods for services in lieu of a paycheck.

But more than that….as per the article quoted; Todd Palin receives much more than $12,000 in value from Arctic Cat. Now, if there’s a back door deal that Arctic Cat says they only give him $12,000 and that IRS form says that…..it’s FRAUD. And Arctic Cat would be part of the Palin Fraud conspiracy.

    Now that could be juicy.

As to this “unreceived” mail, where is it? In garbage bags in the basement? Bwa ha ha!

Re: sponsorship perks: AK has no state income tax, so it is only an IRS issue. It matters not whether Scarah was in government or not, it is still taxable income. Her government service is only an issue from the “financial disclosure” requirements. I think the IRS would simply nail them on the issue of gifts.

  151. mlaiuppa says:

Yes, for the ethics complaints the years of Arctic Cat stuff would only apply for the years she was in office.

But that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about this little ethics complaint revealing that the Palins have not disclosed this “income” on their Federal Tax Returns for perhaps 16 years. That’s an Internal Revenue matter. And it won’t be just for her years as Governor. They’ll go back as far as they like. And it could get messy.

As for “if its not opened it’s not received” that is utter B.S. Ask Fed Ex, UPS or the United States Postal Service when a package or piece of mail is “received”. It’s when it’s delivered.

And if she sits on any letters with checks in them until after she’s out of office, she won’t be able to cash those checks. They’ll have voided out as being too old. I think 6 months is the limit.

Pope Hill Racing is for motocross, but I don’t think that’s too far removed from snowmobile racing. Arctic Cat went on board as one of their sponsors in the 90s. I should think Arctic Cat sponsorship pretty much follows along these lines.

Sponsors make Pope Hill Racing possible! With the support of our sponsors, we are able to help our riders by purchasing practice time at area tracks, provide Pope Hill Racing Team Apparel, pay entry fees to events, and assist in finding additional sponsorships to help defray the costs of motocross racing. In return, our sponsors get a tremendous amount of exposure at the track through our Team Banners, stickers on our machines, presence on our website, and promotional visits by the team members themselves. A visit by our very successful team members can be a great way to bring traffic to a location. Members come in full race gear and sign autographed pictures, display their bikes and quads, and give demonstration rides as space is available at the location. Members also talk about the sport of motocross racing, and promote safety to other riders.

A woman with a lot of vanity and pride, who is extremely ambitious can be a wonderful stooge to be used by these puppeteers. She can be their Yes girl, while they dangle a carrot on a string promising her the moon.

And, if she has no common sense, could fall right into the trap. It appears she’s not really a woman who wants to break the Big Boys Club. Her wealthy sham advisers, like sly foxes, can promise her anything she wants to hear, but what she might not know is that they really have her on their leash. Grandparents.com: How’s the family getting ready?

Chuck Heath: For Bristol’s baby? Oh, I don’t know. [There’s] all kinds of gifts laying around the place — all kinds of baby stuff. I’m in a room right now just full of baby stuff — more than she’ll ever use.

  170. InJuneau says:

Terpsichore–actually, there is a provision in the Gift Tax laws that allows one person to give another up to $12,000 without the receiver having to pay taxes on it. It may just be for money gifts though, which is why the Alaska Fund Trust language was written the way it was to allow any of the family members to get that much out without consequences. I don’t think (though don’t know for sure) that the provision allows for that much in tangible gifts to be tax-free.

I have Scrambled Brain from just going over at the IRS website (nicely organized I think, BTW) and reading about Gift Taxes.

On the one hand, they say that, with a few exceptions which seemed reasonable to me, yes, you must declare the value of gifts you recieve as taxable income.

HOWEVER, they allow have this “Annual Exclusion” table, which seems to say that any one entity, in 2008, could have given me $12,000 as a gift and I could ‘exclude’ it.

BUT that makes no sense to me. I cannot believe for a minute our Feds would allow, say, 10 rich people to give me $12,000 each and I would not have to pay a penny in tax on it. I must be misunderstanding something.

  174. deist says:

    Here is a question:

At the Assembly meeting I heard someone else talking about separation of church and state. Made me wonder some things:

    1. Are some churches becoming organized political advocacy organizations?

    2. If churches have become organized political advocacy organizations, should they be subjected to oversight from APOC and/ or the federal government?

    3. Should churches be allowed to use their tax free income and other tax exemptions to fund and facilitate organized political advocacy?

    4. Should churches involved in organized political advocacy continue to retain tax exempt status?

I regard some local “ministers” in Anchorage to be political activists first, clerics second. I wonder if their churches have become, primarily, political organizations. Who pays for the busses? Who pays for the printing of signs or t-shirts? Do the churches provide the email communications infrastructure to mobilize people? Are tax free congregational tithes paying for this stuff?

But even if that is so, it is highly likely that for at least some of the last 16 years, especially the years since Sarah became mayor and increasingly as she made her way to the Governor’s seat, that Arctic Cat has gifted in excess of that $12,000, and I don’t know that we’ve seen any evidence that that gift amount (whatever is in excess of $12,000) has been reported as income on their tax returns.

Interesting article, which SHOULD have some bearing for Anchorage, though it prob. won’t: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/17/canadian-city-will-stop-d_n_216904.html

SEATTLE — For years, the British Columbia capital of Victoria has dumped tens of millions of gallons of raw sewage every day into the waters separating Washington state and Vancouver Island.

The resulting bad publicity stood in contrast to the city of prim and proper homes, shops, gardens and tea rooms worthy of its royal namesake. Victoria promotes itself as a tourist center, a gateway to the wild forests and rugged marine coast of Vancouver Island.

But leaders of both Victoria and Vancouver, 70 miles away, hope the political tension caused by the sewage will be solved as Vancouver prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Regional politicians last week approved a $1.2 billion plan to build four treatment plants to handle about 34 million gallons of raw sewage that Victoria and six suburbs pump into the Strait of Juan de Fuca each day. The strait separates the island from Washington’s Olympic Peninsula and leads to Puget Sound. The city and suburbs are home to about 300,000 people.

  188. rebekkah says:

I have no clue about how Washington politics works. But am sure there’s lots of wheeling and dealing, especially from strongholds like Texas. One possibility of why the new AG Sullivan was named is that he is a contender for nominee for President 2012, and the Republican “players” are repositioning Gov. Palin possibly to Washington after her governorship is over in 2010. They may already have a job lined up for her, like Coordinator for Pacs or something….. possibly to add icing on the cakes of the real contenders. And, she would be the PR pretty face who introduces the contenders on stage and revs up the crowds.

    2) Why in the world would Arctic Cat give Scott, something they would not also too gift to Todd, especially since Todd, was gleefully announced in Emails, by Arctic as their golden ticket in advertising with the SNL skit and RNC exposure?

    3) Piper, is wearing an expensive head to toe outfit matching Palin’s, she is not seen wearing before. Was Scott in receipt of a just Piper’s size outfit as well?

    Palin is a DUMBASS!!!

  190. Closet Mudpup says:

Palin’s “I didn’t receive it until I opened it” gambit doesn’t stand up IMO. It sounds pragmatic at face value, but if you follow the logic another step, it is a gambit that would allow her to avoid reporting any gift she doesn’t open until she leaves office, thus circumventing the reporting requirement completely. I’m calling BS, and I hope APOC does as well. The requirement to report gifts in a timely manner creates the obligation for her to determine their value in a timely manner as well, and to determine their value they must be opened within a time frame that allows her to comply with the law.

  191. BuffaloGal says:

The new Palin’s Deceptions forum is interesting. It’s still evolving and I’m still finding my way around the format but it definitely has some nifty features. I really like that you’re able to open a live chat with someone. It’ll be fun to see it as it grows.

  192. A Lutheran in Oregon says:

I have some good news on this front. Currently the ELCA Lutheran Church allows gays and lesbians to serve as pastors but only if they are “celebate” meaning if they are in a committed relationship they cannot serve. Yes, I know, this is very silly. Many in the church have been trying to change this in the last few synod and national assemblies, and we are getting closer, but not yet. (Delegates vote on these issues – there are pastor delegates but the vast majority are church members.) Overturning the ban is again on the agenda for this August’s national assembly.

But meanwhile here in the Oregon Synod, just last month, delegates did vote overwhelmingly to overturn it, and several efforts by one pastor to block it were voted down. I know that eventually, if not this year, it will pass nationally as attitudes change and hearts are opened. This is really a long fight, though.

I wish you well in this fight in Anchorage. Hate and fear will never win over love and understanding.

  193. EyeOnYou says:

I would just like to point out that Palin claimed that the coat she wore at the Iron Dog was given to Scott Davis, and he in turn gave it to her after his wife embroidered Sarah’s name on it, but from what the SI article indicates is that this is done for the guys as part of their “deal” so are we to assume that they sent plain jackets to Scott Davis for his wife and Sarah, and Regina was able to match thread and do the work herself, or is it more likely that Arctic Cat actually sent the jackets with the names already embroidered on them??

They are prodigiously sponsored, with their names monogrammed in script on their matching Arctic Cat jackets.

  194. Nan says:

I seem to remember that Todd gets a 1099 from Arctic Cat. NO idea if that is true or not, nor where I read it.

but if true, then he would be considered a “contract employee” by the IRS, and as such, the bucks and benefits from Arctic Cat could simply be considered as part of HIS income.

Of course, that would make the Gov-Coat a one-time deal since I don’t think *she* got anything from them in previous years – when she wasn’t Governer.

(and yes, a “home embroidery machine” would be capable of embroidering the name on the jacket, dangit)

Other Gifts found (one for Todd & one for Sarah) in the Sports Illustrated article EyesOnYou so quickly directed me to. The article is dated March 11. 2009

53-year-old knifemaker, Roger Comar, approaches Palin and Davis reverently. Comar has traveled from his home in Marion, N.C., expressly to give each rider (and Sarah, too) a custom-made jackknife whose blade is crafted from the metal of an Arctic Cat F600 drive chain. Each knife took Comar 20 hours of shop time, and in his moment of glory he tells Todd Palin, “You can skin a moose with this thing.” Then he turns to Sarah and says, “This is a message from western North Carolina that we want you to make a run for president in 2012

  200. mlaiuppa says:

No. If Todd is getting these “gifts” they are income. And if they file jointly she is also responsible for declaring them. If she’s failed to declare them as “income” on her tax returns, that’s between her and the IRS as a private citizen. It has nothing to do with her position as Governor. Except that it would be entertaining fodder should she get caught. And would stop her career in it’s tracks.

I have most of this stuff saved on disc, and have been paying attention for a very long time now. When you go over this stuff time and again, you end up remembering stuff fairly quickly.

This is from the SI link:

Some Iron Doggers have spent upwards of $30,000 to finance a once-in-a-lifetime run into the wild heart of Alaska. Tapping their credit cards, they’ve shelled out $10,000 each for a 2009 snow machine, $10,000 more for an identical training sled, $2,500 for the race entry fee and a few thousand more for trailing airplane support. Palin and Davis, in contrast, have spent almost nothing. They are prodigiously sponsored, with their names monogrammed in script on their matching Arctic Cat jackets. (Palin even has the names of his five kids and his wife, SARAH, THE GOV, appliquéd on his snow machine hood.) They give inspirational speeches at trade shows. They are both adored and reviled. They are the New York Yankees of snow machining.

  206. mlaiuppa says:

My apologies to Sullivan and Alaskans everywhere, but there are certain states for which I will no longer vote for a presidential candidate if they are running from there. Texas and Florida being big ones for obvious reasons. Ohio too, since they can’t seem to count votes correctly. Add Minnesota. Anyone that would re-elect Michelle Bachmann is as nuts as she is. And California, since we were responsible for Ronald Reagan; we should really pay for that one. I’m afraid from what I’m learning of Alaskan poltics, I’d have to add Alaska to the list. So sorry Sullivan, no vote from me.

  207. gdwyer says:

Do you all remember that Todd made a side trip after the Republican convention — after Sarah had been nominated — and was pictured signing autographs at an event for Arctic Cat? Pictures of it can easily be found by doing a web search for Todd Palin – Arctic Cat. The timing of his appearance definitely made me go “hmmm”.

And who doesn’t open their mail for what – 6 months now? Even I get the junk mail dealt with quicker than that. Tripp is going to have outgrown half – no, ALL – the stuff that folks sent him by the time they get to it.

The Post Office counts something as “received” at the time they slip it into the slot. The IRS will want details of this “confidential” agreement. Does SP really want to take on both those entities?

And since they can’t keep them all, I’m sure they sell the older ones.

    2004 $5,000

    2003 $3,000

Sorry, but that isn’t chump change.

  221. Canadian Neighbour says:

    Lilybart,
There is nothing stopping her from running just because she may run in 2012. Other Govs in office have then run for Pres. — Bush, Regan.
What it would mean if she ran is she would have to resign and I’m not totally knowledgable on AK law but suspect it would be another election would have to be held. I don’t think the Gov’s Office would fall under the category that should she step down to run, that she could name the person to step in.

The one problem if she did run is that she would HAVE to win!!

  222. honestyinGov says:

The only way they put him in prison was for ‘ tax evasion ‘. 16 years of returns…?
Have her returns been done by an accountant… Who is this person?
If Her/Todd did them on their own ( with her proven organizational skills ) there must be some glaring irregularities.

One question the Press needs to ask her….Who filed ‘ your ‘ returns for the last 16 years?? What is the answer… Meg..? Interview THAT Guy…. or company. THAT person is not going to fight the IRS. Most of Gryphens comments posted he posted this story said that everybody as a private citizen should ask them (IRS )to investigate. This will not go to her ‘persoanl’ Personnal Board.

Mom really likes her “she knows her stuff backwards and forwards inside and out, presents the info well and she’s got an impish smile.” Now she has my dad watching RM with her. Mom is still registered as an R, but votes for whom she wants since I was 18. Dad changed his registration to I after 2000.

  224. Lilybart says:

Of course she is running for President so of course she is NOT running for reelection as gov. Everything she does and says now is for the Lower 48, not Alaskans.

So she runs again and wins. She immediately leaves the state for the Pres run. She can’t really do that, so she can’t run. And she can’t risk all the negative attacks that would highlight her poor record in Alaska, or risk losing. The latter sentence is the most important reason she can’t run again.

You are welcome and it isn’t the Personnel board that is still looking into this. You can thank Andree McLoed & Celtic Diva for the continued efforts here because they are the ones who went before that APOC and asked questions that ended up with this result.

APOC asked the Governor if there were still gifts that had been received that had not been disclosed and why no dollar amount was given for the AC sponsorship on the financial disclosure.

That is BS of the highest order, especially since she received this stuff based on her run for VP, and we know that she is getting money from donated to her PAC, so she could either have MegOMouth who is paid by the PAC go through it all, or they could hire someone to go through it all. Sort it out, separate what is related to the PAC side of things and what is related to her Governor role and then claim it all as is needed, and go from there. Either way, to allow it to sit there is wrong and is a deliberate attempt to game the system.

I am also curious as to how this all works with Bristol. We heard that she got TONS of stuff sent to her for Tripp due to her mother’s run for VP, so is any of that disclosable or is it free and clear gifts that do not need to be reported? I mean she still lives at home so anything that the family brings in for income must be reported (as we have seen before, they reported Track’s earnings from his summer job as well as Bristol’s).

As soon as I read the ADN story my mind was thinking along the same lines as you. This ‘ started ‘ 16 years ago. With all the ‘unethical behavior’ (OK… lets say corruption ) and no one looking over anybodys shoulder and holding people responsible they probably thought…. Who is ever going to check it out?
And at a local level… she can just bully and intimidate them… who will check. Business as usual. Had McCain not picked her as VP.. nobody would have even been looking at this stuff. Had it stayed on a small scale ,probably no big deal. Organization and planning…..she thinks just one step up ahead. Never looking at the big picture. IE: Veto the stimulus money-Reason : strings attached.
The Legs stood up and proved her wrong. She never anticipates that somebody will do some real fact checking. How could she have known back 16 years ago that McCain would pull this stunt. Mccain may actually be her downfall.

And it’s not like Arctic Cat doesn’t know the governor is going get this year’s machine next year. And what do they do with all of the machines? You’re telling me they have 16 snow machines at their house? I’d guess that…they sell one each year when the new one arrives. That’s income. Even if they’re passed down through the family…what does a five year old snowmachine go for? The clothing has value as well. And *I* think Arctic Cat gained value by having the Governor of Alaska appear at an event wearing their logo, whether she was there as governor or as a private citizen. It was free advertising. I also don’t buy the “I was cold” justification. She’s so dirt poor she owns no other cold weather clothing? Really?

You are correct. She stated on the record that she got first choice of the snowmachines that Todd had rejected from the year before. This was during her interveiw with the OC guys who did the bike for Alaska’s 50th anniversary.

The problem I had was here not at Diva’s site. I tried to submit a post that had no links or anything, nothing remotely close to anything that might have been or would be considered a bad word or even questionable, but it would not allow me to post it. It happened to me a couple of other times, but it just says the post will not pass the spam filter and I can either go back and edit or go ahead and submit it anyway. I believe that I was told once you go into the spam filters, your posts are more likely to have that happen, so I would like to avoid it at all costs.

Nan, the ethics complaint was thrown out but it appears there may have been some substance in the information written in the complaint that has raised some questions that is now being addressed.

If I recall, the complaint was for her wearing suits with logos on which would give free exposure to the company. I may be wrong. But this could have been the weak link but the possibility that how the machines and clothing was obtained was questionable. Therefore they are asking for further info to decide re gift disclosures.

I posted a few questions in Comment 47 that came to my mind as this could be her way of avoiding disclosing and claiming gifts by saying there were sent to her and family “Personally”.

That is a very odd statement.

If people send her emails in her capacity as governor, then what’s this business of “personal capacity”? Or does no one send her email in their role as “family friend”? Does the woman have no personal friends?

If she means that people send her emails to her personal account, but that they are looking for advice/action from her in her role as governor, then they are not communicating under some banner of “personal capacities.”

Things you should know about… how about that story about a mudpuppy’s daughter being forced to pee into cups on the bus/van because her female coach would not pull over to let her relieve herself? Methinks you ought to find out what school was involved, the name of the coach, the name of the AD, the name of the superintendent and the name of the school board president.

Then start asking questions… i.e., “It was brought to my attention that a female athlete on your softball team was forced to partially disrobe and pee into a cup in front of her peers because the coach did not want to allow her to use a bathroom. I am trying to confirm the details.”

Once they discover that AKM might do a post about this alleged situation, I suspect they will scurry like rats. And they’ll start paying more attention to what is going on with their sports coaches. Might even open up the head softball coaching position. The assistant coach(es) should also be dumped as the sense I get is that they know but remain silent. Coaches have an affirmative obligation to their athletes. From what I’ve read, this particular group of coaches not only failed in their obligation, but may have committed acts which are not in compliance with the school code in Alaska.

Time for people to speak up about this type of treatment against high school athletes.

    Simple answer: NO

Just then, Glinda, sensing the moment was right on this November 11 morning, came floating in. “I’ve done enough of this Navel Gazing, donchaknow!” Sarah told her. “I wanna paint the White House red like you said I could!” she pouted. “But Sarah, you’ve always had the power to go to the White House and turn it red! If you really want it, just wish and click!” Sarah, with a look of triumph, moved away from her supporters. The kid didn’t reach for her. He was passed out on the lawn, next to Joe’s six pack. “Thanks for the help! You’ll need this NGO ‘cause I won’t help you when your salmon don’t run or the river floods or the mountain erupts!” she shouted as she waved the AK47 and threw them a box of polar bear crisp cookies with F. G.’s cell number inside. “Oh, and pardon that turkey over there,” she said, waving her hand dismissively in the direction of Geezer.

“Just one catch,” said Glinda shrewdly. You can only wish to go to one house, so be careful what you wish for! Just click your heels together three times and say, “There’s no place like [name of residence] home,” and it’s yours for four years. Sign here.” Signing feverishly, Sarah was suddenly frightened. What if she said the Governor’s Mansion in J. by mistake!

“I’m not going back to that frozen hell hole! I’m stayin’ here in the Ruby City in Oz, surrounded by the GOP!” she thought angrily. She was so determined not to say “Governor’s Mansion” that, before she knew it, she’d clicked her Red Monkeys three times and said, “There’s no place like home.”

“Gotcha! shouted Glinda, as she revealed her true colors–a J. Blue muslin pant suit.

“Aaugh!” Sarah cried as she was whisked through the air once more by the GOP over the GOP. “I forgot to say White Home!” She felt the Red Monkeys fall off her feet into the GOP thrift store beneath her.

Suddenly, she found herself barefoot next to her moose chili in the Hockey Rink Palace. She hadn’t turned off the stove. Sadly, she turned around, surveying her surroundings; then her face lit up. She ran up the stairs into the locker room and grabbed her red cork heels from behind her spray deoderant and hockey mask. “Worked with the Red Monkeys; bet it works with the Red Corkers!” she thought. “Hmmmm. Just wish and click,” she mused as she pulled them on.

He had a red shirt on and was standing next to his wife. I couldn’t hear him so I met him half way. I had Watson on a leash as evidenced in the photo. The older man-probably 70 or so-told me his wife was allergic to dogs. I said, “good thing we’re outside!” I thought maybe he had a schnauzer and wanted to pet Watson. The older man stepped towards me and jabbed Watson with the pointed end of the sign he was holding, and yelled, “KEEP THAT DOG AWAY FROM US!!!!” I was stunned. Anyway…My apologies to AKM and Shannyn as I completely lost it. That guy could’ve called me anything in the book and I wouldn’t have been phased…but jab my dog with the business end of a sign? I told him I would kick his f*&%ing ass if he so much as threatened my dog again. I’m 45 years old and not a fighter AT ALL…the older man would’ve probably kicked my ass…but none the less…I was completely out of line…in retrospect-I’m a little embarrassed…but, it felt so good…Watson is worth my pride. After all, Watson used to bark at George W Bush. He’s a POLITICAL ANIMAL!!!

ALL my frustrations over intolerant, bigoted, hateful, and fear-based people came unleashed at this red-shirted man who would injure my (our) beloved Watson. Other red shirts came to his defense and ordered me to leave. I held my ground and was defiant…The red shirts eventually retreated…Good thing.

I think I might have gotten at least one good punch in had we traded blows…but Shannyn had my back and would have destroyed him and his wife and his small minded friends…Just A Girl From Homer? She has fighting skills. Shannyn eats right wingers for lunch on her Saturday radio show. I think she was looking for a mid week snack! I think the red shirts retreated back to their cave mostly due to Shannyn and AKM staring ’em down.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I unleashed a profanity laced tirade that I am not proud of and I have not done…since…I don’t think ever. But then again, no one has ever jabbed my dog with a hateful sign before…

Watson is home now and snuggling his mom’s feet.

Palin asks for Arctic Cat disclosure exemption

Gov. Sarah Palin is telling the Alaska Public Offices Commission she doesn’t want to disclose the discount her husband, Todd, receives on purchases of Arctic Cat snowmachines.

The APOC commissioners just directed agency staff to research Palin’s response and report back to them so they can decide what to do.)

APOC asked Palin about the discount in an April 29 letter prompted by questions from Anchorage activist Andree McLeod.

APOC also asked the governor if she has any other gifts she hasn’t reported.

The response signed by Palin said she receives boxes of cards and letters, as well some gifts.

“Some people direct their mail to me or my family in our personal capacities and others appear to direct their mail to me as the Governor es qualite’. Mail continues to arrive. There are boxes of unopened mail at this point, even mail that was delivered in 2008. Thus, as initially disclosed, ‘we continue to open boxes’ and we consider any parcel ‘received’ at the time it is opened.

Okay what is going on? NOW she is claiming that details of his sponsorship are confidential and that is in his contract with them. If she can’t disclose this information how was the ethics complaint investigated? How do they know what was given to Todd and Sarah? How do they know that the contract didn’t require or even ask Sarah to wear the clothing? How were they able to dismiss this ethics complaint without knowing details? Oh..wait..never mind, they just simply took her word for it and now she wants the details to remain confidential so no one can question it.

By the way, if Todd’s contract calls for confidentiality, why was there a dollar amount listed previously on their financial disclosure form?

This am, neighbor’s ex says other neighbor calls him to say ambulance was there because someone complained of chest pains so he called hospital to see if ex wife was there (she got congestive heart failure and pacemaker when they were married). They said a woman in 50s on way with chest pains, but turns out not to be neighbor/ex wife. She was out of town for work.

Turns out it was 21 YO. Neighbor had been gone for 48 hrs and girl had drunk so much I can’t even tell you what and how many empty bottles there were. Plus, she tried to slit her wrists to her inner elbow but missed the artery. She’s in county detox.

The school she was to start monday called parents and parents called cops which is how the ambulance got there.
Neighbor came back early from out of town work to empty bottles and blood everywhere. She’s freaked out and when I asked if kid still on parents insurance , she said parents were in process of getting kid insurance.

Evidently, girl was depressed by break up with boyfriend in Feb, which was why she was coming here for school fresh start etc.

A good time at the demonstration tonight. The blues were in good form. I was hoping to see the “Jesus is Lord of Alaska” folks, but apparently they fled the carnage of tolerance. Snagged some great photos for my site — and overall was pleased to see and feel the overwhelming positive vibes at Loussac. Quite nice. Makes one proud.

Did I read that someone hit the dog for peeing on it?

Maybe next week, the pooch could poop on one of their signs.

  307. Bucfan says:

There is not doubt that is Shannyn’s dog. That picture is hysterical

  308. John says:

More evidence as to why I’m a dog person. I should bring one of those signs home for my little dog to pee on. Hell, I’ll join her.

  309. Aussie Blue Sky says:

That’s an indisputable political statement from Man’s best friend. 🙂
