PALIN RESIGNS

Yes, it’s true.  Governor Sarah Palin, at a hastily called press conference this morning, has announced that she will be stepping down from office on July 25, and turning the reins over to Lt. Governor Sean Parnell “for the good of Alaska.”  She’s turning the state over to the guy she didn’t even trust to run things during her failed VP campaign.  She chose to govern by Blackberry, while simultaneously speed reading “Politics for Dummies,” making rhetoric-filled speeches to hopped up conservatives, and being a full-time mom on the campaign trail.  And still she didn’t leave the state to Sean Parnell.  But now, apparently, something is different.

The media is all in a tizzy trying to figure out what’s going on.

Eddie Burke is busy talking to Sean Hannity telling him that Palin’s resignation is a brilliant tactical move cleverly hatched to thwart her enemies.  Clearly this demonstrates her political smarts.  “Now what will they do?” he wonders.  “They won’t have anything to complain about!”   Yes, brilliant.  She’s really thwarted them now.  Why didn’t George Bush use that strategy, we wonder?

Of course, those who have been follwing the Alaska blogosphere closely are aware of the rumors bubbling up that there’s something big…something really big that’s headed her way;  the iceberg that’s headed for the S.S. Palin.  We’ll see.

Meanwhile what we do know is that Palin has littered her bizarre resignation speech with references to ethics complaints, Photoshopping bloggers, the military, Alaska history, a recap of the administration and a hodge podge of other topics.  She delivered the speech with the same adrenaline-filled jaw clenching intensity that she had when she returned from the campaign trail and settled back in to the governor’s office.

And we know that she delivered this speech from her own home, a few hours before the start of a holiday weekend.  Not the time to announce something you want the media to focus on.

The news will be breaking for a while, and she will by no means fade out of the media spotlight.  And as for Eddie Burke’s concern that those who oppose Palin will have nothing to do?  I’m about to go enjoy a barbeque!

Leave comments here, and I’ll check back in as more news becomes available.

Apologies for server issues.  The Mudflats was swamped!

*******************************UPDATES
Okay, I’ve now been able to get independent information from multiple sources that all of this precedes what are said to be possible federal indictments against Palin, concerning an embezzlement scandal related to the building of Palin’s house and the Wasilla Sports Complex built during her tenure. Both structures, it is said, feature the “same windows, same wood, same products.” Federal investigators have been looking into this for some time, and indictments could be imminent, according to the Alaska sources.   From Brad Blog

“I don’t think this is buckling to pressure,” said Ayers. “I think this is her coming to the realization that the legislature in Alaska and that some bloggers and activists in Alaska are going to do everything they can to stymie her progress. This is a governor who didn’t run for the office because she wanted a title. She wanted to make significant change in the state. She realized that that was no longer going to be able to happen, because things had become so partisan there.”  From HuffPo

Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse issued a statement characterizing Palin’s resignation as “bizarre behavior”:

Either Sarah Palin is leaving the people of Alaska high and dry to pursue her long shot national political ambitions or she simply can’t handle the job now that her popularity has dimmed and oil revenues are down. Either way, her decision to abandon her post and the people of Alaska who elected her continues a pattern of bizarre behavior that more than anything else may explain the decision she made today.   From The Daily Beast

Watching the family scene at her house on the raw video running on CNN right now, it is obvious that little knowledge about this was shared ahead of time, no matter what Palin said in the conference itself.

What we are seeing here is either a preface to some indictment, or the final chapter in the career of what has been the biggest political joke of the 21st century. She is so obviously a combination of extreme narcissism and even more extremely bad advice by really, really pathetically bad advisors.

Andrea Mitchell is now being reported as claiming Palin has told some close to her that she is through with politics.    From Firedoglake

    Hey, AKM, you are just awesome! And I am another of those ‘critical of ms. Palin’ who did find something to do as well. We had the first opening (as the building is only one-half rennovated but we could not wait!) of our new Knox County (Knoxville) TN permanent Democratic Office on Friday night and some of us toasted her ‘announcement’ with glee, joy, and a bottle of white and a bottle of red!
    And we have so enjoyed the soap opera that is SC and soon to be ex governor Sanford! This makes Palin’s quitting the icing on our cake. We do appreciate all the scandals, and ‘sexual problems’ of the poor GOP.
    And personally, I think Palin quit for two reasons: money and/or sex! How many trips did she make down here to the lower 48 ‘on business’ anyway!
    We celebrate with y’all down here. These days it is so much fun to be a loyal, liberal Democrat!

  2. Thanks for the updates, I posted a blog on my myspace blog right after her announcement yesterday with a few of my own speculations as to her reasoning, a couple of which seem to be fairly close to the mark, but as always it’s the Mudflats that get the most complete story in the shortest amount of time, thank you. I’ve been real busy the past few months and have missed the flats, but it’s good to drop back in again.

    I’m in agreement with Martha @578. While they may not be “the iceberg” the CBS “Palin E-Mails” between herself and Steve Schmidt were utterly damming on so many levels.

    As AIP party members were her original foot soldiers in Wasilla politics, she showed no loyalty at all. Her willingness to lie not only to American voters, but to her own inner circle is chilling.

    The title of the article could just as easily been: Sarah: Dis-honest and Dis-loyal.

  4. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

    OK, just sayin’ – ALL of the national based pundit / news / correspondent stories that I read yesterday and today about Palin have missed the mark! They’re still confused by her!

  5. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

    I say, she was PISSED. Here’s why. There was a fly following her around and I was the recipient of a story it wildly buzzed at me (comment 5, Sitting Duck thread). This has been a very busy little fly and it’s ba-ack!

    “Mo-om… the phone is for you. It’s JO-OHN.”

    “TELL HIM I JUST GOT BACK FROM KOSOVO AND I STINK AND NEED A SHOWER SO I CAN BASH SOME BLOGGERS WHO’VE BEEN REALLY BAD TO ME WHILE I WAS GONE!”

    “He says: GET ON THE PHONE NOW! Mom.”

    “GRRRR – I’M HOPPING MAD AGAIN JOHN! DID YOU SEE THOSE DESECRATED INTERNET PHOTO THINGS!”

    “Sarah, calm down. We need to talk.”

    “WHA-ATTT?”

    “Do you remember that witch hunt you wanted me to OK over the campaign staff who leaked unflattering info to the press?”

    “OH HURRY UP – OF COURSE I REMEMBER!”

    “Well it stirred up some emails that have ended your national political career.”

    “OH GIVE ME A BREAK! IT’S THOSE DEMOCRAT EVIL BLOGGERS AT IT AGAIN!”

    “No Sarah. The emails released showed that you wanted to lie to REAL AMERICA about Todd being part of the AIP by accident. Even our dumbest supporters immediately asked someone to help them find “the google” and they found a copy of Alaska’s Voter Registration form on-line. It wasn’t an accident.”

    “SO???”

    “You can’t lie about the AIP to the public or to our national security. I can’t be associated with you because I’m a big war hero / POW and it made YOU sound unpatriotic and un-American to lie about the AIP so glibly. It made you look really, really bad. The AIP have a website and everything.”

    “SO???”

    “Sarah, do you have a fork?”

    “YEAH!”

    “Stick yourself, and find yourself DONE on the national political scene.”

    “FINE! I QUIT! I NEVER LIKED ANY OF YOU ANYWAY AND NO ONE IS TELLING ME WHAT TO DO, EVER, EVER AGAIN!”

    “Quit, what? You never announced your intent to run for Pres?”

    “I QUIT EVERYTHING BECAUSE I HATE BLOGGERS! SO TAKE THAT, ALASKA! UP YOUR NOSE!”

    Whatever is coming down on Sarah Palin is something very large, very real and very threatening for her. Her voice was filled with rapid speech and seemed bent on getting as much “info” as she could compress in whatever time she had. Her breathing was shallow and audible.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    She posted a speech on the SOA website which was (I think) a “do over”. I havn’t seen it (yesterday seeing all day long was enough, thank you) but the bots are estastic, Implying that the speeches that were on the news yesterday were somehow “doctored” is what I’m getting.
    I totally agree with you, she was hyperventilating/gasping almost for air, and yet she was very, very pissed off!
    From a fellow NYer…welcome to the flats! AKM and her hardworking blog crew are the BEST and there are a lot of smart, creative and friendly people here. I’m a class-A chicken and never felt brave enough to comment on a blog until I found this place. You’ll learn a lot and laugh in the process. Just a word of advice, though…you might want to avoid drinking coffee while you read. I’ve heard that quite a few monitors have received a caffeinated shower from mudpups!
    Comments from Balloon Juice.com –
    Sloan: Check out the blog that did the Photoshop job on Sarah Palin last week – it’s called Blue Oasis, run by an Alaskan blogger, Celtic Diva.
    She raised $5552.64 to force the state to release some dirt on Palin in a records request.
    The check is dated July 2, 2009.
    24 hours later Sarah Palin called an emergency press conference in her front yard and abruptly quit her job, making two references to the Blue Oasis blog in her speech.
    So what the h*** is in that records request?
    And –
    The Very Reverend: Well, somebody back a thread or two pointed out that Sarah’s lost a lot of weight in the last few months, and has she always had that rash on her neck? It’s obvious to me that she was on something, or suffering withdrawal from something, while giving this “speech”.
    I’ll bet her supplier was arrested and sold her down the river in return for reduced charges. After Troopergate I don’t think the cops are too concerned with protecting her reputation. In fact, I’ll bet they blackmailed her into resigning.
    I doubt if this stays a secret for long, though, it’s just too juicy. And with the right’s obsession with the War on Some Drugs™, I don’t think the base is going to stay on the Sarah train very long, either.
Her voice was filled with rapid speech and seemed bent on getting as much “info” as she could compress in whatever time she had. Her breathing was shallow and audible. And, of course, Palin tried to present herself as such a hard-working, dedicated governor for the people and the state. Whether drug-enhanced, fear-induced, combo of both, running on pure adrenaline, it was not a pretty site.
    Cramming in as much stuff as she possibly could to vindicate herself against her own failings but, of course not taking any personal or professional responsibility for the lies, bullying, erratic behavior that are simply part of her makeup. Narcissists are noted for that. *Me first, best, and if you look the wrong way at me, do something I don’t like I will get even one way or another! I am better than everyone!*
    She can’t just click her red heels and wish it all away. Palin’s feet are being held to the fire by someone, some authority, and there is no way out except the Truth–with which she is not too unfamiliar. She can’t run and she can’t hide anymore. Will be anxiously awaiting more news.
    But for now, I am going for a swim and then enjoy the barbecue day.
    There will be a post about Shannyn’s show, and the link to listen will be in that post.
    Martha Unalaska Yard Sign @ 524 – Great read. I suspect you are right on target.
    This has been a truly breathless roller coaster run – and I’m not talking just about the last 30 hours! I don’t know how any of us could have survived the last 9+ months without the “Internets.” God bless you all!
    Makes the Watergate and Iran Contra scandals appear boring and tame by comparison. The Bush-Cheney race-to-war is the only thing that still beats out the Palin drama, but Palin adds a bizzaro twist that may place her in a category of her own. (Of course, my ex continues to drag out the Clinton Body Count thingy, but until snopes.com verifies this, I’m gonna keep that thing on another list.)
    I don’t care what happens to Palin so long as she stays away from elected office. We can’t help the blind who still follow her. They dig their own graves as did the Jim Jones fanatics. I only feel sorry for their children.
    From the Associated Press:
    “Some party officials, including some once close to Palin, wondered whether she departed in advance of a brewing controversy, an assertion her camp denied. During the presidential campaign, McCain officials fretted about six or seven areas of personal and professional concern, according to a former official who helped investigate Palin’s background after her rocky rollout.
    This official, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters, said the governor’s explanations for many subjects never fully passed muster, but the stretched-thin campaign was forced to accept them during the final march toward November.”
    Very interesting. I’m glad that McCain and company cared more about their “stretched-thin campaign” than the well-being of the nation, but whatever. moot point now.
    For some reason, I can’t post the link. But it is a recently posted AP article by Philip Elliot, called “Analysis: Palin’s resignation hurts her future.”
    Martha UYS
    That’s because Sarah doesn’t know WHY she believes what she believes. She has no way to draw thinking people into the mix, because she can’t offer explanations or talk sensibly about the issues. She doesn’t WANT conversation about the issues. She is solidified in her beliefs, but can only draw others in with her with her fakey, gushy “Oh you are so good at what you do!” crap. As soon as she doesn’t get her way with the gushy, sappy Sarah talk, then she gets angry.
    ——————–
    well said!!! she’s ignorant, uneducated (didn’t get through college by working the curriculum-I still haven’t figured that one out!), shallow, spoiled, and disinterested in intelligence and growth. Unfortunately for AK, she’s still there…so keep firing away with questions to keep her accountable…it’s not over ’till it’s over. Any career she wants in showbiz is fine by me…anyone can do that …just stay out of my government! We do NOT want a dictatorship here!
  42. phoebe says:
    Every single reason she gave for quitting in her resignation speech was untrue & lame. Not one reason she gave was a truthful reason. I’m thinking Romney & Bush Dynasties may be practicing a little heavy handed blackmail. Most Repubs have money & family backing, she has neither.
  43. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:
    @ anonymous
    What she meant by “lame duck gov” is that she had already decided not to run for re-election (which we all knew would be the case – she’s NEVER get re-elected and she knew it). That’s the political definition of lame duck, and that’s exactly why Parnell immediately filed as intent to run for Gov. He probably won’t really, but doesn’t want to be another “lame duck” in that sense or he won’t be effective. He won’t be very effective anyway – he’s a putz – but at least he’ll get something done and work with our Legislature so that maybe THEY can get something done.
  44. anonymous says:
    Palin’s lame-duck reason is lame
    In a long, rambling statement, Palin said “I thought about how much fun some governors have as lame ducks…And then I thought – that’s what’s wrong – many just accept that lame duck status, hit the road, draw the paycheck, and “milk it”. I’m not putting Alaska through that – I promised efficiencies and effectiveness!…I’ve determined it’s best to transfer the authority of governor to Lieutenant Governor Parnell.”
    So let’s get this straight: Palin claims that she doesn’t want to be a lame duck Governor because that’ll be bad for Alaska, but she believes it’s more “efficient and effective” for Alaska to now be run by a lame-duck Lt. Governor.
    What a moron.
  45. JHop says:
    Seagull JP – no problem. This blog community is terrific, I am just happy that I found it! I thought the “media scandal” from Andrew Sullivan line was interesting, too. I don’t know what it means. There have been so many rumors about Palin over the past few months – as Shannyn Moore, Mudflats, others, have all mentioned or alluded to – that it is hard not to wonder if the mainstream media has more information that they either cannot prove or are just holding onto for political reasons. Like The State in the Sanford saga, they may be lacking an additional source to substantiate their information. I am tired of waiting for the other shoe to drop; I am ready for it to crash to the ground already….it seems inevitable.
    This is another really good compilation of rumors/theories from the Moderate Voice:
    http://themoderatevoice.com/38003/palin-resignation-another-shoe-to-drop/
  46. Gindy51 says:
    “he sends message to SP via that new bloke (AG) – stand down or it’s coming out, be a good girl, keep quiet and you can still have a future.”
    McCain has about as much pull in the old guard GOP as I do. Read not much.
    The upper echelon do not like him as he is a loose cannon, just like they don’t like Palin. She won’t do what they say when they say it and they do not appreciate her hogging the spot light away from more viable (read will grab Independent and disaffected dem votes in 2012) candidates.
    She should have taken a lesson from Jindal, when you make an ass out of yourself stfu and hide for a while. She didn’t and now the chickens (dead turkeys) have come home to roost in her pay to play house.
  47. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:
    Sarah WAS pissed in that speech – big time! I’ve watched her far too long (ack! ack!) unfortunately, and that was a pissed Sarah, just talkin’ and talkin’ as fast as she could. The other thing – the press release at her home (or SBS’s home) without any press but local – that was a total flip off to the national press and puppet string holders. She’s goin’ ROGUE I tell ya! Back to bein’ all mavericky! Not only was it all in a hurry, it was all she could do to not say “F ALL of You!”.
    That woman wants NO ONE to tell her what to do – hence she quit. Too many ethical and legal strings in the Gov’s office – she wants to be FREE of accountability and watch dogs! She still sees nothing wrong with her blurring of personal and public lines – she lives it, breathes it, and thinks it’s all OK. Don’t bother feeling sorry for the family – they are all in lock step with her.
    I cracked up listening to the pundits yesterday and all the guessing going on. There are STILL people who think if SP gets good advice, she can run for Pres. They just don’t get it – I don’t think anyone gets it except Alaskans, and others who have followed the day to day sickening drama this woman calls her life. She will NEVER take anyone’s advice outside of AK – she trusts NO ONE. This is why she never really did any of the Republican political things after the Alfalfa Dinner. She doesn’t like those people. She liked the star attention, but she doesn’t like any of THEM. She’s only a small fish in a big pond “out there”. She can’t handle that.
    As I said many times in the past, SP could have NEVER left her Wasilla base to move to DC for any length of time. Even if elected, she would have maintained her home in Wasilla and spent as much time as possible there. She doesn’t fit in with the national political crowd – she only fit in with the whack jobs at her rallies – never any one else. Just like yesterday – she wants to tell people how it is, and take NO QUESTIONS! She wants to blather and babble, and take NO SERIOUS QUESTIONS. The only thing she wants from folks on the other side of the mic are adoring looks and smiles, with some clapping and cheering thrown in.
    That’s because Sarah doesn’t know WHY she believes what she believes. She has no way to draw thinking people into the mix, because she can’t offer explanations or talk sensibly about the issues. She doesn’t WANT conversation about the issues. She is solidified in her beliefs, but can only draw others in with her with her fakey, gushy “Oh you are so good at what you do!” crap. As soon as she doesn’t get her way with the gushy, sappy Sarah talk, then she gets angry.
    She only gets people to follow her through the charisma part. Once that doesn’t do its job, she strikes out. She’s tried to fire just about anyone who has crossed her at one point or another.
    Someone pissed her off big time – and she threw off the shackles. She won’t be running for Pres because that has way too many obligations, and she won’t be able to get away with all of her crap because the scrutiny is too high. She doesn’t have enough people she can trust who she can fill positions with. Wasilla is small, and she does not trust outsiders. Forget the presidential run. She’s onto something else where she can spill out word salad to her heart’s content and to run her own show w/o folks breathing down her neck.
    Thankfully, due to this personality disorder and complete inability to ignore criticism, or to duck and hide – she won’t be able to perform any high level job for long. There will always be someone to poke a stick at her and piss her off. Just like we did. She’s quit before, she’ll quit again. I think she really is done with politics, for now.
    She does have a million offers – she loves the star power just not the responsibilities, so she’ll choose something where she can rewrite her history and say whatever she wants to her loony followers. As far as those loony nut jobs go – we couldn’t be more sick of them here. They were doing her NO favors at all by jumping into the middle of stuff they didn’t know in Alaska, and were as responsible for her declining approval as much as anything else. Gotta love it – big “shout out” to the loonies at Team Rats and Goons for Palin. You did a GREAT job out there! Never thought I’d say it, but THANK YOU all for being Palin’s whack job nut case followers!
    She’s goin’ ROGUE, outside of gov’t – religion and book writing is my guess. Books let her write her own history, religion lets her tell people what they should do without any of the pesky explanation thingies. She’ll continue to drag her kids around, and raise them into the same set of principles, or lack thereof.
    Thanks to all the ankle biters and liberal bloggers in PJ’s for setting her up for the death of a million mosquito bites.
    OK, done with SP today – she is now SO out of my system! Enjoy!!
    I think this state has gotten more sad and pathetic by the day since the years ago when my family came here. The state has turned into a huge joke abroad and houses a whole lot of whiners who are never happy no matter what. Let’s see what happens now as the state goes farther into the sh*t hole than it already is. Looking forward to that (not). Good luck to Alaska to find someone actually competent and educated enough to run this state. There isn’t anyone. Alaska attracts the duldrums of the weak and uneducated into politics…forgot about the corrupt aspect too (oh right that’s just about everywhere in the US now and seems to be fully acceptable, at least until people get caught *don’t ask don”t tell!*…so nevermind).
    What I think is possible – JMc has info on SCarah from campaign, late vetting etc., really bad stuff with proof. He knows if he lets it out his reputation is dirt, putting US in terrible peril. He also knows leaks are starting, so, he sends message to SP via that new bloke (AG) – stand down or it’s coming out, be a good girl, keep quiet and you can still have a future.
    at the same time we need to look at the little gov….will he be a change or more of the same by keeping her crap in effect….will her appointees be un-apointed…hows abut that friend who loved cows…will she be put out to pasture?
It was widely assumed in Alaska that Palin wouldn’t run for a second term. But this?”
    Okay, when the super conservative Weekly Standard, Bill Kristol’s little blog of lies, is as baffled as the rest of us, there is something fishy going on.
  64. JHop says:
    I am an attorney; but each state has different procedural laws on this, and I am unfamiliar with Alaskan law. That being said, if it is a federal crime, which I assume it is, then yes, normally a potential defendant is served with a subpoena to appear at a grand jury proceeding in advance. They do not HAVE to inform her though; it is possible to get an indictment without the defendant, because the defendant is not allowed to present evidence anyway. Only the prosecution presents evidence at a grand jury proceeding, so her participation is not required. I don’t know if that helps. I can research this and find out more…
  65. mae lewis says:
    Everyone agrees that the press conference was called at the last minute. So many people were caught unaware and uninformed. Something also came up at the last minute to rattle Sarah. She is usually self confident, poised and in command when she gives a speech; she does love the spotlight.
    So I’ve been thinking about what could cause her to be so breathless. The labored breathing was audible above the ducks quacking and the geese honking. Here’s the question: In a Federal Investigation (think Housegate), don’t they advise the person that they are a target? especially if they might be asked to appear before a Grand Jury next week? (I’m thinking back to the Scooter Libby business when the reporters used this kind of language). Any legal experts want to weigh in on this possibility?
  66. JHop says:
    I really cannot think of one positive reason for resigning, unless she is being forced out because of criminal indictment or, after that crazy rambling resignation speech, plans to deny everything and then say “see I told you so, everyone is out to get me.” She clearly has (or had) presidential ambitions, and this did nothing for her, other than causing the media and public to collectively gasp “WTF?!”
    I am in NY and stumbled upon this blog yesterday. It is amazing! Please keep us “outsiders” informed of any local news or information from Alaska. It is beyond appreciated. Thanks for everyone’s hard work uncovering this!
    Sarah needs Piper. I think Piper is the brains of the operation & the steady one. Can you imagine the stress in the Palin household? I didn’t see Bristol during the resignation speech. So many of the Palin’s questionable dealings happend long before she reached national attention. Alaskan politics have been pretty corrupt & she could have probably gotten away with a lot more if she had limited herself to Alaska. If it is Housegate, what took so long. I think the one thing we do know is that the resignation was a surprise to even those close to her.
    If there is a major scandal about to break I wonder why the media isn’t on top of it. Getting tired of already hearing about the “elite media” & the liberal elite. Wondering if this is some devious GOP dastardly plot afoot.
  70. antiAnti says:
    Palin looked angry not nervous in her resignation speech, IMO. Comparing her facial expression to the clips of McCain’s concession speech, I see a lot of similarities. This leads me to think that she had planned another route out of whatever difficulity she’s in and that route was blocked at the last minute. Remember in November she would only take a “no speech” from McCain himself. Someone with a lot of power said “no” to Palin probably has late as Thursday night. My conjecture is that it was the big money in the religious right. I think neither the big money guys nor Palin think Palin is down for the count.
  71. rebekkah says:
    I felt bad for Piper hearing her mother say that Trig needed her, but she needed him more, and the world needed more Trigs. This is again an indication that she speaks without thinking, not thinking of the effect it will have on her other children.
    Another note that she referred to the most important people in her life, “her children” – no mention of her husband. I really hope this drama ends serenely for the family’s sake. But, at issue here is the governor’s accusations that media, bloggers, are the reason she quit. Clearly she does not want to claim responsibility for any fault of her own.
    Impending death is the only thing that gets a commercial fisherman to take nets out of the water. Even if Todd is a suck fisherman, it’s still a capital expenditure to be there.
    He did indeed miss some substantial fishing yesterday; 3,000 lb average deliveries yesterday.
    July 3 – The escapement in the Wood River yesterday was 73,000 and 13,000 this morning, for a cumulative of 586,000. The Nushagak sockeye escapement was 18,000 yesterday, for a cumulative of 290,000, and the Nushagak king escapement was 2,100, for a cumulative of 66,400. The unapportioned counts at 6:00 a.m. are 5,900. The Igushik River escapement yesterday was 17,700 sockeye and 5,200 so far this morning, for a total of 74,000. The harvest in the Nushagak District yesterday was 535,000, for a cumulative harvest of 3.9 million sockeye.
    July 2 – The escapement in the Wood River yesterday was 43,000 and 45,000 this morning, for a cumulative of 548,000. The Nushagak sockeye escapement was 33,000 yesterday, for a cumulative of 272,000, and the Nushagak king escapement was 2,100, for a cumulative of 64,300. The Igushik River escapement yesterday was 14,800 sockeye and 6,600 so far this morning, for a total of 57,700.
    Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon Per Delivery
    “People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing’s more important to me than our beloved Alaska,” Palin said.
    Faith in a kooky, fanatic, lunatic religion replete with witch doctor, family with a multitude of problems where if she would spend some QUALITY TIME with the kids might not be as whacked out, and as far as AK, I can’t help but wonder if she has skrewed it up so badly that it may never be possible to repair all the damage! God help Parnell as he’ll have to work 24/7 for at least a year just to ‘make sense’ of all the chit she left behind.
    Since she is as hard and brittle as cement nails, I will never believe it was difficult for her to do her job due to ‘many ethic complaints’ – she never did her job in the first place since actual work was left up to all the ‘worker bees’ she put on board her sinking ship! There has to be a TRUE, HUGE, UGLY AND FORMIDABLE STORY about her coming out soon and she figured she had better leave before the chit hit the fan.
    During this interview, for her to discuss ‘ALL her accomplishments’ especially in helping move forward a North Slope natural gas pipeline [nothing has been done on that]; the rest is work performed by others unnamed but Palin takes the glory. At least our country can take a ‘deep breath’ with this announcement. You betcha we have all just been saved from that ‘pig wearing lipstick’! Please tell me she DID NOT WINK!
    From comment on Gryphen’s site:
    I find it interesting, and nobody has reported this, that Tim Petumenos works for the same law firm that represented the City of Wasilla over the protracted land battle that the sports center sits on.
    Birch Horton Bittner and Cherot made a bundle of money off of that one.
    Bittner is also Uncle Ted’s brother in law.
    Wasn’t she running Stevens’ PAC while she was Mayor of Wasilla ?
    Wasn’t Steven Silver hired as a lobbyist to get the money for the Sports Center in the first place ?
    Someone should be digging into this one.
    The Petumenos info would explain alot about the Troopergate issue.
Why wouldn’t she just live out her term actually working for the Great State of Alaska (and I have to say, HATE the way she pronounces it!)?
    She’s just so gosh-darn MAVERICKY also too you betcha, she could have just gone contrary to what other govs SUPPOSEDLY do.
    Also, too, still can’t believe the firings in the Health Dept. Why would she do that if she was quitting? Hopefully, Parnell will re-hire them.
    Akm, Snoskred, Serverguy, – thanks. GINO is out, Alaska is saved. In the clip, she looks nervous, thinner, tired (and still style challenged). A poster earlier wrote about Todd giving up fishing to return for this announcement. Sarah’s comments in Runners World about her determination and endurance, her basketball analogies, telling Charlie Gibson that she didn’t blink when offered the VP position, nickname Sarah Barracuda does not describe a quitter. Leaving elected office mid-term can’t help her (mythical) image as a leader, a doer, a rising star of politics. If SP were going on to something good, she would have had more people around her. (During the election, we were treated to her sitting on a couch in a hotel (lobby?), with Daddy stroking her tenderly. By contrast, as Piper squirms during this life changing announcement, Todd shows all the affection of Prince Philip.) Where were her parents, siblings, staff? No, there’s not good news for Sarah. Wouldn’t it be great if the publisher stopped payment on the check?
    However, in Sarah World, maybe she’s moving to Iowa to get a start on 2012. Maybe she’s scared by North Korean missiles. Maybe the poison dropped on Rat Island wafted to her home. Maybe an affair with Mark Sanford, or some other Republican nutcase – remember reports of a first meeting with McCain’s people she was wrapped in a towel, Rich Lowry’s drooling in the National Review. She loves any media coverage, the more critical the better. Manipulation is her one true talent. I think she’s in big, big trouble.
    The posters here are insightful, thoughtful, intelligent with a wicked sense of fun. AKM and crew bring out the best, and I’ll miss the dishiness of GINO news. There’s lots to know about a SP free Alaska, tho & I’ll be back to see if Gov Parnell makes a difference, if life will improve for Alaskans. AKM is a wonderful writer, please keep us up to date not just on politics, but the beautiful pics and commentary. Earlier someone wrote that you’ll always have a place to stay as long as there are Mudpuppies. You betcha.
  99. Palin’s move puts yet more pressure on Obama to finally get some results, as the soaring rhetoric isn’t hypnotizing the plebes like it used to. This week Helen Thomas, Colin Powell, and Warren Buffet all turned on him. Polls are looking droopy for The One lately.
    Obama’s porkulus program is a train wreck, all it’s done is bump interest rates and tank the dollar. We are being laughed at by bad guys like Tehran, Pyongyang, and Al Qaida who amazingly turned-down Barack’s friend-requests.
    Palin could trounce him in 2012, when Americans would vote for the Gipper-in-Heels in droves- while begging for lower taxes, free enterpise, a defense posture with some backbone… an end to the radical, anti-American nightmare we’ve got now.
    Palin got her book deal several weeks ago and decided to cut and run with the money from that and her two mego marathon fund raisers.
    She can pretend she is a victim but, it really is Alaska and her stupid supporters who are the victims.
    snippets from Yahoo news
    Palin’s spokesman, David Murrow, said the governor didn’t say anything to him about this being her “political finale.”
    “She’s looking forward to serving the public outside the governor’s chair,” he said.
    ———–
    And Pam Pryor, a spokeswoman for Palin’s political action committee, said the group continues to accept donations on its Web site, which saw an uptick in contributions Friday afternoon.
    ———–
    The announcement caught even current and former Palin advisers by surprise. Former members of Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign team, now dispersed across the country, traded perplexed e-mails and phone calls about the vice presidential nominee’s decision to step down.
    ———–
    Lisa Murkowski, whose father was the governor when he lost to Palin in the 2006 Republican primary, was dismissive of the announcement.
    “I am deeply disappointed that the governor has decided to abandon the state and her constituents before her term has concluded,” she said in a one-sentence statement.
  110. NY Dem says:
    I wonder how all those ‘palinbots’ feel now – now that Palin has helped them empty their wallets for her “defense fund” !
So can Palin dictate the new Lt Gov in her role as the outgoing Gov? What if Parnell selects Joe Schmidt or any of the other dept heads?
    quote: Let’s stipulate that if there is some heretofore unknown personal, medical or family crisis, this was the right move. But Gov. Palin didn’t say anything like that. Her statement was incoherent, bizarre and juvenile. The text, as posted on Gov. Palin’s official website (here), uses 2,549 words and 18 exclamation points. Lincoln freed the slaves with 719 words and nary an exclamation; Mr. Jefferson declared our independence in 1,322 words and, again, no exclamation points. Nixon resigned the presidency in 1,796 words — still no exclamation points. Gov. Palin capitalized words at random – whole words, like “TO,” “HELP,” and “AND,” and the first letter of “Troops.”
    Sarah has put her speech on her Twitter account. It is interesting although, it said the same she did before, except it was definitly done later. Unlike her first speech which was too animated and very disjointed, and choppy, her second speech said the same thing, except her speech is not as animated, disjointed, and Todd’s airplane wing in the background. Earlier I posted she sure seemed to be high on something iduring first speech, now I think she really was. Check them both to see if you don’t agree
Wait, she doesn’t read newspapers. And she is speaking a mile a minute, and breathing heavier than Rush Limbaugh after a flight of steps.
  139. Sourdough Mullet says:
    OH, my God! Was out on the lakes all day and just got back to hear this amazing news! We drove through Wasilla after hearing it, honking the horn and hollering. We even made a special little detour past Palin’s house, singing at the top of our lungs “DING DONG, THE WITCH IS DEAD!”
    Wish we had time to make a float for the Wasilla 4th Parade tomorrow. It would definitely feature a sad, defeated witch squashed under a house, with only a shiny pair of red Naughty Monkey pumps peeking out from beneath the wreckage.
    Thank you again AKM for your amazing work in being a standard-bearer for the truth for all these long, dark months. As Sarah says, “We Win, They Lose”.
  140. HamletsMill says:
    I suddenly stumbled on to the announcement and her speech on my car radio this afternoon while off work for the 4th and out shopping. On the radio she sounded completely rushed and manic. Just one cut below Alvin and the Chipmunks. Is she on some kind of medication? I was somewhat amazed. She sounded like one of Imadinnerjacket’s female nasal Iranian translators only she was translating herself from some far away continent in her distant and muddled inner mind. Or the breathless Tele Screen reader in the 1984 version of Orwell’s “1984”. It was bizarre to say the least.
    Yes. All you dearly beloved Mudpuppies in both Alaska and the Lower 48 keep the wooden stakes and hammers always ready under your beds just in case. But the consensus of the pundits tonight is that she has truly committed political suicide and it really may be over after the last ten months of utter horror.
    We all went through this amazing living hell together and were somehow all fused together in the insane ordeal from P-Day (August 29, 2008) onward as it happened.
    AKM and the Alaskan women here assembled marshaled every one of us who stumbled onto the Mudflats to defend our country the United States of America from the abyss as the utter shock came upon us.
    I honestly believe Ice Flow Barbie has now come to the end of the road. it was indeed a Shakespearean tale told by an idiot signifying the deranged mental illness of our country over the last eight years.
    So I think Palin is just making a whole lot of excuses to get out of being Governor so she can cash in. She got her book deal. She just did two marathons for donation to her Pac and legal fund. And she can do a speaking tour for $ 25K per speech. She is free to promote her book. And she might even run in the primaries.
He is a world traveler and has wasted more money than any other department head, but he gets away with it because he is Craig Campbell. Do some research, bloggers.
    Sarah said today he was going to be the new Lt Gov. He is cut from the same cloth she is – narcissistic and delusional. My theory is that Randy Ruedrick, GOP King in Alaska, has determined that Campbell has the best shot for Rethug Governor in 2010. Hence, instead of her pal from Corrections, Sarah / Ruedrick have directed Sean to select General Campbell.
    I wonder if it has dawned on her yet – after she resigns, she has no voice. Ruedrick hates her.
    I just had a frightening thought. SP gave 3 weeks notice. Time enough to change her mind (think other iinvites where she teased, and was “on again, off again”). Yikes. IF the sh*t does not hit fan, she says: “The citizens of Alaska need me, I have received MILLIONS of e-mails and I polled all FIVE kids and asked if I should UN-resign and four of the five said “YES” and one said “H E LL
    Yah” and I AM BAAAAAAAAACK!”
    darn, I will have nightmares with my own imaginary scenario.
    “Oh, I polled my kids and I asked: Should we bomb North Korea?”
    Poetic justice indeed!
  185. bucfan says:
    Justafarmer, true. And remember, people really didn’t start looking into her house until she did those interviews with Greta where the house was really spotlighted. Then it started to come out about how it was built roughly the same time as the sports complex and on and on. And of course who in the lower 48 would have known what the hell a troopergate was?
  186. justafarmer says:
    @Seagull…agree completely! She has NO idea what “lam duck” means!
  187. bucfan says:
    SJP, well technically if she were to have just announced that she wasn’t running for re-election, she could be called a lame duck. Years ago, I heard it said that a sitting president becomes a lame duck the minute they win re-election. Course that couldn’t have been said for FDR, but anyhoo.
  188. honestyinGov says:
    I sure wish Andree McLeod would post something here. Maybe even have AKM have her do a post of her own like Les Gara did after Doogan.
    I would love to see her thoughts and opinion.
    Bob Poe needs to get out there now too. Parnell said he is not running. Which is funny because after the speech when the server was down I had to go to the Echo Chamber to see if they jumped ship.
    Someone over there was saying Parnell was going to get re-elected in
    2010 and ” Take Charge … and finish what Sarah started! ” Poor Fools.
  189. justafarmer says:
    Suchanut, I think you’re correct. If she had not hit the national scene, who outside of Alaska would have cared? (And I say that as a former Illinois resident, and a current Kentucky resident, and had major corrupt governor issues in both places that the rest of the country didn’t care about…oh, and I was in Illinois pre-Blago.)
  190. jojobo1 says:
    Jeez my ears ,my ears after the first few post I had to listen to her a thing I have avoided since her attacks against Obama and inciting people to riot.Will she continue this as a fox talking head.?Will Todd the thug and her continue to be in the back grown telling Sean what to do.? I hope not> I hope he can be his own man for the time left. She talks the talk but does not walk the walk and talks about supporting any new governor and we all know she would only support someone who thought like her and most certainly not a democrat.And to still say millions when she was proven a liar.Sorry to say I hope they do get them and go for the gold There is enough family to take care of the kids if she was imprisoned.The only ones I saw shoe any affection for Trigg was Todd,and the two older girls.I have never seen her show anything towards this child except to put his face i9n the public view, What a great 4th for you Alaskans we hope at any rate.She can still do a lot of damage along with Eddie and Rush,Thanks AKM Keep up the good works and just because she is gone does not mean their are not others to watch
  192. Seagull Junker Palin says:
    Something I just want to repeat.
    The former Gov. talked about being a lame duck with complete ignorance of what that term means. It means you are at the end of your term, someone else has been voted in & you are just killing time. i.e. Bush 11/4/08 to 1/20/09.
    It is NOT that minute when you decide you are not going to run again and have 1.8 years left in your term.
    Give me a break. How many have taken up the lame duck meme? Pitiful.
  193. Suchanut says:
    Sarah is on some drug. She talking faster than normal, more animated, and her speech is choppy- I knew it normally is, but more so than normal. Her short sentences make it more difficult for the listener to follow what she is saying. I have no doubt about this!
    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
    Not to mention that she was gasping for air….as she blew through those periods!
    Considering she had the article this week in Running World, she exhibited strained breathing for someone who is “so into running”. Her inhaling between sentences, some of which where 6 words, was extremely loud and laboured to be heard on the microphone.
    * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** *
    her breathing was very abnormal, especially for one who is used to giving public speeches. and very abnorrmal for her. and very abnormal for a runner, i would also think.
    granted, she was understandably very emotional, but … why would the anxiety level be much higher here than, say, the biden debate, or couric interview?
    my theory? she was, and to some extent probably still is, having an anxiety attack.
    sigmund freud hat on/ hate to tell her, but its not going to go away until she deals with the underlying issues behind the anxiety, like guilt about all the people shes thrown under the bus, guilt about all the rural alaskans who are going to have a very difficult time this winter whom she just effectively abandone and said ‘here Sean, you deal with it”, guilt sbout how she dragged Trig everywhere for photo ops but not one shread of photograhic evidence nor statement out of HER OWN MOUTH indicates that that boy has had any kind of the care (physical therapies, exercises, even evaluations), information that most parents of special needs kids would be clamoring for and thrilled to get, use and publicize. /hat off
    ACK! i cant go on right now.
    Alaskans, have a truly independent Happy Independence Day!
    see you on the other side of the fray!
  210. Fascinating. It’s always enjoyable when a piece of machinery gets run up beyond its tolerance, hits max-Q and starts blowing smoke out of every hole.
    Looks like that’s happening to Alaska’s governor.
    Some swear that she’s getting ready to run for President – but a crack in the head like Lisa Murkowski gave her, isn’t a good start to it.
    Gettin’ the popcorn out, watching.
    PS: She’s not the LAST governor to get the blowtorch to the butt, if that’s what happened.
If you actually believe that Sarah Palin worked for Alaskans then your no better than she is and I am fearful of what Alaskans can expect from you. The citizens of the state just got rid of one fool, they don’t need another. For God’s Sake man, grow a pair and do what is right for your state.   216. samper says:
    Man… all this Puppy Love just makes me wish I was with you guys in November when Grant Park in Chicago was just electric with enthusiasm!
    Not that I’m complaining! I was curled up on the couch, kitties by my side, adult beverage in hand and ROFLMAO at Palin holding back her tears that she wasn’t moving to DC. Classic! I watch it over and over when I need a good laugh. LOSER!
    For the record: I never once believed that having served as McCain did made him Presidential material. Admirable, yes, h/t to him for his service. But that does not a President make. And that Palin woman! What was he THINKING?????
    Then, equally nice was being curled up on the couch, kitties by my side, adult beverage in hand, all choked up, watching President ELECT Obama’s victory speech. God, what a night that was! I was out of my mind elated. I grabbed Boy Kitty (I freaked out Girl Kitty, who hid under the bed) and we danced around the living room while they played “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” No fear! The drapes were closed and I’m not being run out of the neighborhood! 🙂
    OK, I’m a great big baby… on January 20th, I even shed a few tears thinking a huge RED weight had been lifted and the Great State of Michigan would soon experience relief with now PRESIDENT Obama’s agenda. I still feel it.
    I’m realistic enough to realize it takes time. Never once expected immediate and complete relief. But we, as a State, feel much better knowing he’s got our back.
    It’s still really bad here, but we have HOPE and all indicators say things are improving ever so slightly. Projects under the Stimulus Plan are kicking in and giving our workers a chance to WORK. Folks like me, however, have to wait our turn… I don’t know how to operate a HI-LO (road projects), but I’m confident a mid-mgmt job for a gal with an MBA is right around the corner.
    I hardly think we’d have this feeling of relief under the McCain/Palin ticket. No way. We’d all just leave the state and the last person out would just turn off the lights (energy conscience, we are!). Sadly, it’s a terrifically beautiful state to think of leaving. I’ve lived in HI, CA and NC and always come back to MI. Color me silly, but I love my state, my Gov, and my home.
    OH! And GE is moving in!!!! What could be better than GE MOVING INTO OUR STATE? Just a few more corporations moving in, is all we need! We already got Google… just a few more!!!! 🙂 It was a great day this week when that was announced!
    Still, it would have been awesome to have been here those nights with all ya’all. Even now, I can hear all your champagne corks flying!
    I don’t think this could even be comparable, but it’s really great to have a place to celebrate with like-minded folks. Thanks, Pups! “I heart all of you, man” (Reference the Bud (?) “I love you, Man” commercials) (had a few refreshing adult beverages tonite in celebration!). 🙂
    I think it’s gotta be bigger than house-gate (which they could lie/squirm out of with a good atty). It’s bigger than Trigg-gate. It’s bigger than IRS-gate. None of these, singularly, are things that an EX (say it with me!) EX Gov will go to jail for. Fines up the wazoo, yes, but not jail. Not with Co-God Van Fleas on the job. And now, with the book deal, she can afford it. Damn! 🙁
    BTW: She’s got to be RICH now, with SarahPac funds! The “morans” CONTINUE to donate today in “support”!
    It’s got to be something bigger. But then, I laid odds that today’s announcement would be a non-event and STILL owe you guys $1000 on that prediction! 🙁 Anyone for forgiving the debt of an unemployed gal in DETROIT?
    There is nothing that would give me more glee than a BONAFIDE charge against SP that has her doin’ the Perp Walk. She’s screwed so many and gotten away with it, this isn’t an unreasonable desire. FIRING THE HEALTH DEPT. FOLKS the same week she resigns? Is she KIDDING ME???????
    I wouldn’t want it to be something easily dismissed, but something PROVEN and BAD. JAIL BAD. But, our great country has nothing if we don’t have the whole “innocent until proven guilty” bit. I’ll defend to the death her right to representation, but I would hope that representation FAILS in disproving a legitimate charge. A BAD charge. A JAIL BAD charge.
    Maybe it’s just me… but there are so many corpses under the bus, I HAVE to believe that a murder charge could stick.
    Let’s all not forget our fellow bloggers, especially CD, who’s tireless efforts have led to national scrutiny of Palin’s behavior. And Shannyn, Andree, Gryphen, et al. I don’t want to leave anyone out, but CD and Andree really went the long mile with their determination. I haven’t even had a chance to jump to CS’s site to see her reaction. Will do so as soon as I hit “Submit”.
    AKM, what can we say? You kept everyone in the know and gave us a forum to espouse whatever what is on our minds. You, Snoskred, et al make this a “must do” on every single day’s “TO DO” list. MANY thanks! XOXOX.
    Last, but not least: While humbly saying he’s not all that “great”, our beloved Server Guy went above and beyond by answering a call at 3AM his time (in Japan, is it?) to make sure we could all share today. XOXOXOXOX to Server Guy…. not only for humility, but also, too, for waking up for us!
    Server Guy, et al: There is a warm home, good eats, libations abound if you’re ever in Detroit. Would love to host any/all of you!
    XOXOXO to all,
    Samper
    Aside/OT: August 1st is my birthday! Can I join all ya’all in NYC? I can just tell the pup hugs would be worth airfare alone! Would it be insane to try to hook this up with the Pitt Stop AKM and Shannyn will have for the convention mid-August?
    Next year, we MUST have CD included in the event… they have three rounds of nominations… One for AKM, one for Shannyn, one for CD.
    Also, too!
    Pepperzmom, I saw the speech and immediately sat up straighter when she said that. The quote is attributed to Marine Corps General Oliver Prince Smith during the battle of Chosin Reservoir after the Chinese came across the North Korean border en masse. Perhaps she meant “I shall return” by McArthur which most of us would have seen as a threat not a promise.
  221. mae lewis says:
    @ Canadian Neighbor: I agree with you about the strained breathing. And it was quite loud. She was breathless. Your reason is valid; she’s supposed to be a marathon runner. Another reason that this is strange is that many people were impressed with her incredible self confidence. The person we saw on TV didn’t fit that description. It would be fun to hear a body language expert weight in on her.
    I just have a strange feeling that by the time this week is over the last thing anyone is going to be saying about Sarah Palin is that she resigned to prepare for a 2012 Presidential run.
    I think the reality of all this is that Sarah Palin resigned so she could start preparing to find a way to keep herself out of jail.
Did she mean it as in she is not go to be a public official in the near future or was it just more poor Palinese sentence structure?
    But having said that, this was too rushed of an announcement….what did she find out this week that is sooo bad she has to resign?
    CNN (AC) was grilling her MIA (in “upstate NY”) spokesperson tonight. Paraphrased “she promised Alaskans 4 years…and they get 2? That is NOT leadership” Stapleton was saying that GINO had soooo many offers today to do this and that now that she was leaving. AC asks “like WHAT?     She is NOT the Governor of AK and so she should NOT be able to use the name of Alaska for her fundraising in my mind. She does NOT represent AK.
    Somebody needs to shut that Fund down…. before Kristan Cole can take the money and put it away as well.
    ~~~~~~~~
    she shouldn’t of been allowed to use the name anyway! Total Fraud. This fund has nothing to do with the people of Alaska, except of course her own family!!!!!!

    Having been flipping around different sites to find vids of different people talking, etc., I came across a story on msnbc regarding all the emails requests filed by networks and news publications, the same request made by Andrea when they were conducting state business on personal yahoo accounts. MSNBC had a quote from Palin’s office at one time for these at $15 Million!!! WHAT?? It, like Celtic Diva’s, has ratcheted down to $5 to $10 thousand. Seems Alaska, as much as they are whining about the time, resources, staff freeze, etc, are making it a resource of income in the Gov’s office as there were 13 requests for these. If they are charging each one the same price for the same search, not a bad job if you can get it. That to me is something the networks and others should get together on as it seems to be another violation as it’s then only going to entail photocopying after the initial searching.

    BTW…the MacArthur quote is not from MacArthur! Another faux paus….

    NY Times has this: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/04/us/politics/04palin.html?_r=1&hp

    But at another point she invoked a military quotation, misattributing it to Gen. Douglas MacArthur, in what seemed to be an effort to wave aside any suggestion that she was abandoning the fight. “He said, ‘We’re not retreating; we are advancing in another direction,’ ” she said. (The remark was actually said by Maj. Gen. Oliver Prince Smith.)

    maybe they dont mind wasting public dollars and state time
    but i do

    “I am deeply disappointed that the Governor has decided to abandon the State and her constituents before her term has concluded.”

    Alaska Trust Fund———-
    Here is a question though : What about the ” Alaska Trust Fund”…?
    She is NOT the Governor of AK and so she should NOT be able to use the name of Alaska for her fundraising in my mind. She does NOT represent AK.

    Meg’s sports analogy didn’t work on Cooper Anderson (who claimed to nothing about sports) and it didn’t work on me (who will claim to know something about sports, including the workings of being a point guard). Frankly, her sports analogy was inappropriate and misplaced.

    For one, if the basketball is good governance, then Palin never had the ball. If the hoop is supposed to be achievement, then Palin’s team has yet to make a bucket. It simply does not fit.

    As I listened to Cooper attempt to get one straight answer out of Meg, I kept thinking that she was dancing like a boxer trying to avoid stinging bee. She was about as verbally illiterate as a person not named Sarah Palin could be. But then, she does appear to be a person who believes that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. And keep on going. Cooper should have offered Meg a bucket. No, not one for the basketball, but one with which to bail. And bail. And bail.

    On page 2, here is a bit I hadn’t seen, from Fred Malek:

    Fred Malek, a Republican strategist who has advised Palin over the past year, said Palin was “really unhappy with the way her life was going”.

    “She felt that the pressures of the job combined with her family obligations and the demands and desires to help other Republican candidates led her to decide not to run again. Once that decision was made, she realised, why not do it now and let the lieutenant governor take over and get a head start on his election,” Malek said.

  289. From Daily Kos: Palin resigned because She doesn’t want her tenure as governor to overshadow her experience as mayor of Wasilla.

  290. Forever Annonymous says:

    People, I’m not happy,, she sounded truly deranged, and Piper so uncomfortable. This is truly sad…..I wish someone would have publicly taken her down, with no line of defense for Sarah…….instead of seeing her trying to cover the sun with a finger……..she’ll never believe this is sad for someone who never liked her.

  291. BigSlick says:

    “I cannot stand here as your Governor and allow millions upon millions of our dollars go to waste just so I can hold the title of Governor.” – GINO Palin

    This is the clue to solve the riddle. Since we know her legal bills don’t add up to millions yet, what would cause her to predict bills to the State of this size? She expects all hell to break loose, something much bigger than anything she has ever faced before, to come at her. And quickly.

    Lawsuits against her, and against the State? I believe HouseGate may be something she has to deal with personally, but I believe there is something coming that has it’s roots in an some action she took in her role as Governor. An action that will draw the fire of someone else who is willing to spend millions on a legal attack.

    Think of the possibilities:

    1) A major oil company? BP, Exxon, TransCanada, others?

    2) A Federal Agency that decides to sue her and the State?

    3) A major political party or campaign organization for a political candidate?

    4) An organized Class Action lawsuit?

    5) A criminal indictment….

    Any combination of the above or other things I might have missed might be the true reason for her actions.

    One thing is for sure, nobody is going to resign as a first-term (ONLY term) Governor and expect to win the Republican nomination to run for POTUS in 2012 — unless they are insane or brain-damaged or both.

    So she may very well still think she is running for President.

    Palin resignation shakes up Republican presidential prospects

    arah Palin launched a political grenade into the nascent Republican race for the next presidential nomination, yesterday, by announcing she was stepping down as Governor of Alaska.

    Beset by a seemingly endless stream of what she called frivolous ethical challenges and political controversies, Ms. Palin said she preferred to “take a stand and effect change” outside the governorship, rather than “just hit our head against the wall and waste valuable state time and money.”

    Even us little old Canadians are dancing with joy.

    —-
    I’m guessing Bristol was the ‘Hell Yes’. No one was misused or thrown harder under the bus than Bristol.

    But I don’t think this is why Palin resigned. I just think things are very, very tense at the Palin residence these days.

    And I really wonder who convinced Palin she had to resign. I do not believe for one second this was her choice. And I also don’t believe she gives a damn what her kids want or think.

    I just read Palin’s speech again. Wow – that was actually harder to read than it was to listen to. But there is a recurring theme…

    “It hurts to make this choice but I am doing what’s best for Alaska.”

    “I cannot stand here as your Governor and allow millions upon millions of our dollars go to waste just so I can hold the title of Governor.”

    Nope she didn’t resign because she wanted to – she resigned because she HAD to! I think she resigned because she would rather not be indicted while still the Governor and then have to resign after the fact.

    OR

    She made a deal and part of the deal was she resign now. I really don’t think this is a sex scandal. I think this is serious stuff go to jail stuff.

    And the house thing really makes the most sense. The whole house thing smelled like dead fish from the beginning. Starting with her revoking all the building permits laws so no one could track who did what, to her political cohorts getting the choice Wasilla sports Area contract, to the Palin family suddenly finding themselves in a luxury lakeside home that Todd built with a ‘few friends’, the whole think has always smelled rotten.

    I don’t think we’ve even seen the tip of the iceberg yet, but I do think it’s starting to come into view just over the horizon…

  309. Mike In Illinois says:

    Back in those heady days of 2008 I entered some posts on this blog where I asked questions about who built her house and whether or not they were perchance also involved in building the sports complex while she was mayor. This was after the Greta interview with Todd where she asked how he got the nice house built and he said “some contractor buddies” helped him out. I thought at the time that this sounded an awful lot light Ted Stevens redux. I guess I wasn’t the only one who noticed. I can’t wait to see this one play out!

  310. hirsutekantian says:

    Maybe she’s gonna double down on the whole Trig/antiabortion thing and become some big Spokesperson for the Anti-Choice movement.

    And WHY oh WHY does she continue to say that people are making fun of Trig? I haven’t seen anyone making fun of Trig!! I think we are concerned for Trig and wish him and his mother the best, and if his grandmother gets confused about who is being made fun of, well–she should always just assume that it is SHE we are making fun of! 🙂

    Do you still pay taxes on your TV? (get a TV license?) When I lived in England, I got busted for not having a license! No one told me I needed one when I moved there!

  338. tizzielish says:

    She never did seem to really grok that being a politician was not only about getting attention and accumulating wealth. There have been, and always will be, crooked politicians but even shady politicos know that they have to, um, govern and maintain a strict appearance of impropriety.

    Sadly, I think her real falling is that she rose too quickly. If her rise had been slower, she might have learned better how to hide her petty grabs.

    I can’t wait to see what the iceberg is. If she is about to be indicted, it’s not going to matter if she is in or out of office. If federal prosecutors have a case against her, her resignation won’t stop it.

    I admit I feel a little sorry for her. Sure, she is hoisted on her own petard. If she hadn’t been dishonest and, let’s face it, stupid, she wouldn’t be in whatever mess she is in. She could have had a fine career in politics if she had done exactly what she said she would do when she first started running: eliminate corruption and govern for the people, not for lobby influences.

    And yeah, she seemed kinda buzzed when she talked today. She talked way too fast, usually a sign of nervousness. I would imagine she has had plenty of training in how to give a speech. You talk a little slower, enunciate more carefully and you pause. If you really understand how to give a speech, you know that where you decide to pause, to let your listeners absorb what you have already said and then catch up with you, is key. Today she talked like a nervous high schooler giving her first public speech.

    I sure hope she is in some kind of scandal trouble. And I sure hope she’s gonna be off the national stage now . . . well, when her final scandals fades away.

    Just FYI – point number 7 in the Daily Beast list of possibilities is replete with misinformation – just sayin’
    Refers to Troopergate scandal – which is old news.
    Quotes Anchorage Daily News as saying Troopergate costs were near $300,000 – that is the figure for all the ethics complaints – not just Troopergate.
    “Meanwhile, The Daily Beast’s Max Blumenthal reports that Todd Palin’s snowmobile sponsor, Spenard Building Supplies, may have been mixed up in questionable political and Palin family business.” – Spenard Builders is just one of the sponsors and not a major one. As we all know, Arctic Cat is the primary sponsor. I shop there, and I could be wrong, but they just don’t seem like they would be involved in politicis – and for that matter, the family doesn’t have a business, per se.
    I am a stickler for details – 😉 There is plenty to pay attention to without confusing the facts.

  346. JanMarie says:

    Just had a thought…
    she keeps mentioning $500,000+ legal bills…maybe they are not for the “frivolous ethics complaints” but for defending against a FBI/IRS investigation into Housegate…
    Maybe now that the Ethics Committe has revealed that “hey, we only spent $300,000 on investigation”, and she needed money (the same amount as the cost of the house, by the way…. to pay her “legal bilss”. She can’t pay back the “embezzled housegate funds” and so the other shoe will drop!!

Palin is that figurehead for the aggrieved fundamentalist right.”

    OK, everyone has had a good laugh. Here’s a serious question. Just how many governors resign from office, and under what circumstances? There was the guy in New Jersey who had a wife and a boy friend. There was NY Governor Spitzer who got himself in big trouble with you-know-who. But I don’t get it. Nobody just walks away from a job because they don’t want to be a lame duck. Plenty of people in public office finish their term of office even though they won’t run in the next election. (Remember President Johnson who decided not to run for office again, but chose to try to work out the problems in Vietnam).

    My first reaction was that Sarah wants to take on something more financially rewarding: book deal, TV gig. Now, I tend to think the rumors of an investigation regarding Sports Complex & Palin House Deals are going to require time and money. And, it would be quite an embarrassment to deal with that investigation while in office.

    I don’t believe for a moment that ethics complaints, Letterman’s jokes, pajama clad bloggers, defiled baby photos and critical articles hounded her from office. If we had that kind of power, I can think a a dozen more folks who deserve our electronic slings and arrows. So, other than a governor who resigns because of a scandal or serious illiness, just how many other governors just walk away after 2 and a half years?

    Dorwin and Joanne Smith, the principals of complex subcontractor DJ Excavation & Development, have donated $7,100 to Palin and her allied candidate Charlie Fannon (Joanne is a Palin appointee on the state Board of Nursing).

    The last name of the people that sarah stayed with for 5 days in Giddings is “Smith”. The article from the Giddings paper that I posted awhile back stated that sarah’s friends were from Wasilla………hm-m-m-m. Will have the full name at the beginning of the week. Damn – hope she was not househunting down here.

    I live in NYC, not Alaska, so I don’t know how much about local Alaska politics, but she sounded far more nervous to me in today’s speech than she did during any of the VP debates, and that makes me think there is something she is hiding and something very rushed about this (despite her remark that the decision had been in the works for a while). My first thought — based on her comments re: the world needs more Trigs and re: going outside of government — was that she is going to head some anti-abortion group, and try to rebuild her image and focus her supporters that way. But who knows, her speech was such incoherent word soup, and her repeated cryptic comments re: “wasting millions of dollars” make more sense if there is an indictment coming. And if that’s true, I can’t *wait* to see what she’ll do to raise money for her legal bills. She’ll be rasslin’ a moose on Pay-per-View by this time next year . . .

    Hmmm, interesting assessments on SP’s move here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bruce-wilson/sarah-palins-ramping-it-u_b_225606.html

    Curious/alarming aspect is this:
    …Sarah Palin’s close affiliation with the New Apostolic Reformation, a global movement that is rapidly redefining Christianity. As I explained to journalist Bill Berkowitz in a recent interview, mainstream media has so far missed Palin’s association with the aggressively supremacist New Apostolic movement but…

    What’s this about? Did I miss something on the AK blogs re: this “supremacist” connection???

    Palin is such a national liablity…her ties to the AIParty and her rehtoric will get her on the terrorist watch list.

    Now, when Parnell quits on account he wants to run for Don Youngs seat in congress….well A/G Sullivan becomes Governor of Alaska…

    Of course Palin is guilty of complete moral, ethical and literal corruption and of course it was going to catch up with her and of course there is a strong movement in Alaska against Palin and rightfully so that have contributied to the “somebody” has to do something race to zero out the palin factor……but it is the republicans that put the hit on Palin that took her out…and…

    it is not game over. The Palin affect is just begginning to manifest …wait and see or remember this post 10 months from now…or sooner?

And she really does not want to run for higher office, that this is not a case where she is stepping down in order to clear the way for a presidential run. In fact, she has told some of her biggest backers in the national Republican Party that they are free to choose other candidates for 2012, which of course opens new avenues for Mitt Romney, for Tim Pawlenty, for other potential candidates who are definitely in the running.”

    She can travel wherever she wants, whenever she wants. She can support whatever cause she wants without infringing on her duties as GOV. Since she can’t seem to understand what is required of her in her position, this will ease her mind.

    Someone has offered her a really cool awesome opportunity. She isn’t going to blink – she’s taking it!
    ——————————————
    I’d be inclined to think that if she was quitting her job to take up something ultra-lucrative and ultra-glam that she wouldn’t try to bury the news – and blow off all that publicity that she so likes to milk.

  472. Lisabeth says:

    Article on Daily Beast by Max Blumenthal (I hate some of his articles so who knows) that housegate is the iceberg.
    Sorry I don’t have the link but it should be easy to find. Also received a Twitter that an indictment is coming very very soon!

    I hope this is all true and with Palin out of office, maybe people will not be afraid to tell the truth. So was Palins whole speech a BS lie?

    If she indicted, will her supporters STILL defend her?

  473. Closet Mudpup says:

    austintx

    I was all but praying for those ducks in the background to start making ducklings. She could’ve outdone the turkey vid!!

  474. sauerkraut says:

    Wait… did someone really say that Palin isn’t a quitter?? Hot dang… remind me again… what was that news conference about??

    Right.

    SHE QUIT!!! MIDSTREAM!! Sore loser and a benchwarming quitter, she is. Hope she gets a splinter in her arse while she’s warming the bench.

  475. Isabella says:

    KaJo..THANK YOU!

  476. Lee323 says:

    I agree that someone or something has put the screws to her….and she’s been forced to resign.

    Her demeanor during the speech was not that of a conquering hero who’s going onto more ripe battlefields or even a self-satisfied megalomaniac….She was exceedingly nervous and just able to keep herself together.

    BTW….How dare she talk of being victimized by politics when she fired Walt Monegan and screwed-over who knows how many other “little” people while she had the power!

    The “bloodsport” of politics has now become her own karma….well deserved.

  477. sauerkraut says:

    yanno, ya alls… got a serious question here… with Palin outta da house, what the heck are we alls gonna be doing now??? Man… spent so many hours reading comments on so many of the Alaska blogs. Might even spend some vacation time up there now that Palin is no longer the guv… plus, what else am I gonna do now????

  478. Women Who Run With The Wolves says:

    Happy, happy 4th of July! I don’t think I can stomach the resignation speech, so I will trust all of you to tell me how truly awful her acting was. It’s a beautiful day here in Southeast Alaska. Literally.

  479. Isabella says:

    CG “She’s not a quitter and public opinion is unimportant to her. She never does anything that there isn’t something in it for HER. Someone has offered her a really cool awesome opportunity. She isn’t going to blink – she’s taking it!”

    Palin tried way to hard to make that insider basketball analogy work for her. Bringing up Trigg, the photo shop, the breaking down at the end…this is a forced situation. The speech SUCKED she did not have help from big time PACS or wealthy backers. Palin is out there on her own…someone or thing spooked her to get out of Dodge.

  480. sauerkraut says:

    6 months ago… just sayin’

    perhaps the patience paid off?

  481. politicalamazon says:

    Replying to CG’s great post, part of which is quoted here:

    “Something incompatible with being the governor:
    a. A sweet gig in the entertainment biz
    b. Campaigning for president (A real campaign, not just 60 days at the end of someone else’s.)
    c. A run for senator”

    The only thing that makes some big GOOD thing happening is that, if she was going to run for something, or if she had signed a deal with Fox to be –whatever–she would have made that part of the announcement of her leaving office as governor.

    Pain may be many things, but “coy” isn’t one of them. She’s beyond obnoxious in her name-dropping and bragging. If she was resigning to go to a better position (like working for Fox, where no one would give a rat’s patoot if she read a newspaper, and would care even less if she just pulled stuff out of her kiester and presented it as “fact”–in fact, that’s The Fox Way), she would have crowed about it. If she was going to run for office, she would have announced that, too.

    Also, CG gave great insight to realities in Alaska that this Californian is clueless about, particularly fishing. Why, indeed, did Todd fly home and miss the season? Why couldn’t Sarah have waited until he was done, home, rested, and through filleting and freezing?

    This sounds like an urgent, nearly “emergency” resignation, and I don’t think it’s for something good.

  482. Laurie says:

    Regarding the kids off to the side of Palin….are they not Parnells kids? They looked liked the kids I saw in a video of Palins inaugeration ball. His kids were there and those children looked like them. I dont think Bristol and Willow were present for this news conference

  483. ThirtyFiveUp says:

    She delivered the speech with the same adrenaline-filled jaw clenching intensity that she had when she returned from the campaign trail and settled back in to the governor’s office.

    There was considerable nervousness apparent to me. Not the Sarah we have come to love for her entertainment value. You betcha.

  484. CG says:

    Here’s a million dollars worth of motivation – now she gets to keep all the donated money from last year and a half. Checks in unopened mail ( just 4 of ’em listed in her disclosure was $5,500), the Fund Trust (20% of their goal is still a chunk of change, $100,000+), SarahPac. And now she can openly and proudly own the clothes, yea!

    And she gets to avoid any loss of income from Arctic Cat, Spenard Builders Supply, Fairbanks Gold Company, etc.
    Plus, now she won’t have to pay any fines for ethics violations.
    My belief (with nothing to back it up) is that the legal debt was actually covered by the outside organization that was advising her in the first place, and sent attorneys up here to “defend” the case, the Liberty Institute and Family Foundation. I think she personally owes very little, if anything.

    Millions. I think I’d take the money and run, too. Also.

  485. Chaim says:

    “Clink”!!

    That represents a toast to you, AKM, and your fellow Alaska bloggers, wishing you a happy Independence Day from Illinois, the state that leads the nation in convicted governors. After this federal (hint) holiday, “clink” may have a distinctly less celebratory association for some up there.

    This made my day!

  486. Professor Geezer says:

    Also, CG, I think Palin is a big quitter. She quit a lot of colleges, for one. She quit her AK Oil and Gas Commission post. She is flaky about her speaking engagements. And now she’s quit being a Governor–for no good reason.

  487. A Fan From Chicago says:

    When I first heard the news I thought one of two things: she’s running for president and needed the prep time. Or, someone has some seriously bad-assed information that’s about to come out.

    I had seen clips of the announcement during the day but finally saw the whole thing. The only conclusion you can draw is that a world of hurt is about to come crashing down around her.

    No one does this on Friday afternoon before the 4th of July. You can bury a story on Friday but not this story. And not the way she did it. Shoes, boots, waders, body casts are about to drop.

    Can’t wait for the details.

  488. ds55 says:

    @ Uncle Joe McCarthy: The ‘joke’ about Trig that Sarah mentioned in her resignation speech wasn’t a joke exactly. Sarah complained about a photoshopped picture of herself carrying Trig (someone replaced Trig’s face with Eddie Burke the Alaskan radio guy).

    Some folks figured they’d needle her about it by making a zillion different photoshopped pics from the same photo. It was hilarious fun actually not making fun of Trig, but making fun of Sarah, but you know she has no sense of humor. It’s all here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3160064&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=3

  489. bucfan says:

    Got an e-mail from my 89 year old mother asking what is going on with my governor? I told her that we haven’t been able to figure that one out for two and a half years. So nothing she does should surprise us, but this definately did.

  490. gran567 says:

    I’ve watched the speech twice and really listened to the voice and the facial expressions, to me, she’s on the edge of a total meltdown. There is something coming at her and she knows it. Her usual disjointed speech was more fractured than usual. And the expression on Pipers face! She’s been eavesdropping and knows there’s trouble ahead.

  491. mae lewis says:

    The clip that I saw on TV did have Trig there for a few minutes. As usual, it was Piper who was holding him. She was also doing her famous hair number, slicking down his hair. Todd was standing next to them.

    The camera person was given a poke, and quickly switched to a closeup shot of Sarah’s face. In addition to the duck and geese noise in the background, Trig babbled a little. The next time that I looked up (I can only take so much) Trig was out of the picture, and Piper and Todd stood on one side of Sarah. Piper was pretty restless and uncomfortable. It was also strange that following the speech, Sarah went around and hugged everyone, including some of the other children (who were they?) . It wasn’t a very big crowd; MSNBC put the crowd at something between 12-15 people.

  492. Professor Geezer says:

    @CG, if criminal indictments are coming for Ex-Governor FlakyToes, no one will want her on the radio or TV until it’s cleared or she’s served time (like Liddy).

  493. jimzmum says:

By my noble act of renouncing my crown, strike that, my position, I will take every ounce of media attention off you for the next week so you can have some peace and quiet from the gotcha media we both hate so, also. _____________________________________________________________________

    I am with you 100%. I have always felt that the only thing that would stop Palin would be for her to be exposed. She has an extreme sense of self to think she could be President, so I believe she will try unless the truth comes out about this woman.

  498. Isabella says:

    I am tossing in another donations toward AKM’s YOU ROCK HAVE A STEAK DINNER and a WONDERFUL GLASS OF WINE thank you for all you have done. I wish I knew months ago the Progress This Blog clickable up on the right.

    There is absolutely no doubt AKM has been significantly responsible with her writings, decency, common sense and extraordinary humorous writings a force Palin has had to reckon with.

    Reading here and there the past couple weeks I was getting concerned about some of the other blogs prancing to Palin’s errors by rushing posts on their sites which in their hurried state were without fact and a couple entries pretty snarky. Another reason I LOVE MUDFLATS is the degree of dignity and professionalism AKM holds herself & forum to.

  499. NoCalGal says:

    I really DO wonder what bombshell is out there.. I do not for a second believe she would leave but for something monumental… unless it was to go on the speech circuit and to rake in the bucks, while the raking is good…

    Shocked? You betcha. Pleased- even more so!

    If anyone else is in need of a real-time “huzzah” and has AIM, I’m on “southtownsnews”. ( i was going to use my personal acct but it’s my actual name and I had this odd paranoia moment. how’s the sea dealing with things??)

  501. OK, I just listened to her speech. Weird, that one. She kept talking about we and our but it sounded like she was referring to herself. I thought only the queen of England used the plural. Well, we all know that SP things she IS the queen. . .

    And she kept bouncing up and down. Reminded me of Rush in that clip that Olberman always uses. Bet he picks up on that – or I hope he does.

    Wouldn’t it be refreshing if she had just said – “This job was much more than I thought it would be, and I’ve realized that I am not able to continue. I have my children to think of and have decided that, in THEIR best interest, I’m resigning.”

    She would’ve scored a lot more points with everyone if she had just said that and left out the snippy comments blaming her demise on everyone picking on her. She really doesn’t get it.

    So with the time she spent on the VP campaign trail and the time she wasn’t in the governor’s office, has anyone figured out just how many days she actually served of this shortened term in office? Did Alaska actually get at least one year’s worth of time from her?

  502. Greg Goss says:

    Iceberg? Or just bored? Running a state takes work, and if you don’t got the talent for it, you don’t got it.

  503. politicalamazon says:

    That was one strange speech. Forgive me, I do not wish to cast a shadow on Mrs. Palin’s fine character, but I have a brother who was a meth addict for 10 years. She was wired on something, and if it isn’t meth, it’s something very close. She was grinding, and bad. I bet she wore off about 1/6″ of enamal on the occlusive surfaces of her teeth during that speech.

    Y’all have some really good questions here, and previously. I’m particular interested in the obvious nature of last week being completely Palin-Normal (you know, constantly trying to get the media to pay attention) and now suddenly she resigns.

    So History Goddess’ question was like a lightbulb that went off: “If this was in the works for awhile, why did she waste the money going to Kosovo?”

    INDEED.

    Going to Kosovo was a big set-up for her “foreign-policy” chops. No one would waste that kind of expense and set-up to prove foreign-polic experience unless there was a good reason…and I don’t think resigning as governor quite fits the bill for that reason.

    Having just watched Her Sarahness’ grand “Royal Resignation Ramble” for the 3rd time (OK, so I’m masochistic, that way) I’m re-posting what I posted over in the “Hmmmmm” thread (#353); something is just not ‘right’ about what she IS telling us… something, I’m convinced, has her really scared chitless. So much so, that she didn’t even have her perennial prop, Trigg, on display with the other children as she babbled on. Very odd.

    ““““
    [Here’s what I posted in the other thread]

    Someone, somewhere, was getting WAY too close to uncovering/exposing something…

    Sarah is MUCH too savvy to just up and quit. She knows leaving a position -let alone the position of Gov- won’t look good on her resume.

    And money? Money, schmoney – this whole thing smells too much for it to be a mere case of her wanting to cash in NOW on her ‘magnetism and charm’ – there’s something else, something really big, a-brewin’.

    Someone, somewhere, has the goods on her and is fixin’ to spill the beans. I betcha. Too, also.

    That said, I’m sitting on the edge of my chair waiting to find out WHAT it is that has Her Sarahness running so scared that she’s unable (and/or unwilling) to complete her term.

    Keep up the fantastic digging and fact-checking, AK blogsters – you’re doing us all proud. I’ll get the next batch of popcorn…

  507. CG says:

    Don’t get too comfortable, kids.

    The timing. Hmmm. She says this was planned and discussed.
    Todd flew back from Bristol Bay fishing LAST NIGHT. The peak of the season is July 4, with the volume of the run of salmon for the entire season, the first week of July. It’s over by July 15.
    So he flew back last night, during a fishing period, an extension today and probably more fishing time expected tomorrow. Numbers show a push of fish, clearly fish are moving.

    Westside Salmon Announcement 25
    This is Westside salmon announcement number 25 issued Thursday, July 2 at 12:00 p.m.
    Commercial fishing with set gillnets in the Nushagak and Igushik Sections is extended 25 hours until 10:00 p.m. July 3.
    Commercial fishing with drift gillnets in the Nushagak and Igushik Sections of the Nushagak District will be allowed for 8 hours from 1:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. July 3, and again in the Nushagak and Igushik Sections of the Nushagak District for 8 hours, from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. July 3.
    The escapement in the Wood River yesterday was 43,000 and 45,000 this morning, for a cumulative of 548,000. The Nushagak sockeye escapement was 33,000 yesterday, for a cumulative of 272,000, and the Nushagak king escapement was 2,100, for a cumulative of 64,300. The unapportioned counts at 6:00 a.m. are 8,600. The Igushik River escapement yesterday was 14,800 sockeye and 6,600 so far this morning, for a total of 57,700.

    Oop, there is is:
    This is Westside salmon announcement number 27 issued Friday, July 3 at 3:00 p.m. Commercial fishing with set gillnets in the Nushagak and Igushik Sections is extended until further notice.

    Naw. Couldn’t have been planned for Todd to blow off fishing July 2nd.
    I missed my grandmother’s funeral because we were out fishing. My dad missed my brother’s birth.
    It just doesn’t work that way, it’s a one-shot deal. You’re either there or no season. You can’t make it up some other time. Why would he have bothered to gear-up for fishing, make the investment in being there and preparing for fishing, if he wasn’t going to be there for these few decisive peak days?

    He flew home for some kind of a really big huge deal. She says she consulted her kids who unanimously voted in favor of whatever the next adventure is, and she said she’ll discuss the details of this at another time. Hmmm.

    Something incompatible with being the governor:
    a. A sweet gig in the entertainment biz

Five minutes later, my son called. “I can’t believe I am doing this,” he says (he is disparaging of my obsession with Palin news; he refuses to discuss any of it with me) but “Mom, have you heard the news? And, oh, by the way, Mudflats is crashed! Too many people,” he reports. I tried anyway. I blogged on as many of the other sites as I could. I left the office, bought wine, ribs, bread. Then I returned and read some more. (BTW: I did finally listen and make notes on the first CD’s information.) Going home now – wow! Happy Independence Day Alaskan friends and all others too. I want to know what the real reason(s) is/are. We deserve to know.

Receiving line hugs as she tottered on the red shoes (heels on grass??!) from one relative to the next after the speech – a little odd that she didn’t stand still and have them come to her for the hugs….but the whole thing is just so odd it seems like a smart choice on Bristol Willow and Trig’s part to be elsewhere.

    That sorta trumps the “affair with Todd’s business partner” rumor, doesn’t it? 🙂

    Okay, I don’t want to engage in schadenfreude, but considering her long history of vindictiveness and total disregard for the wellbeing of those who don’t serve her purpose—not to mention her astounding ignorance and arrogance—Palin deserves this:

    And somebody needs to do a rebuttal to her speech especially the part where she went over all the “suckcesses” that her administration had. How could put that stuff out without laughing hysterically, I will never understand.

  534. Ethan says:

    I hope Parnell serves your state much better. 😀

  535. ServerGuy says:

    My only real complaint about all of this, is without fail, that woman manages to cause a news rush, and break my damn servers, at 6am on Saturday mornings.

    At least now, I might be able to sleep in on weekends in the future 😉

  536. Congratulations on being swamped on this special day. Mudflats, you are truly in time with the pulse! If I could have left a comment on your previous post, I would have said that maybe Palin has been offered a lucrative reality TV deal. Or that she is going to hike the Appalachian Trail. I’m sure someone has beaten me to that joke though.

  537. trisha says:

    It doesn’t make sense that she would step down to start her run for 2012. It makes her a quitter—not even finishing one term as Governor. Plus,
    if she is complaining about how she is treated currently….does she think that will go away if she is planning on running in 2012.

    It will only get worser and worser for her.

    Is there something in those emails between Eddie and Palin that would make her step down ahead of the media?

  538. HistoryGoddess says:

    Anderson Cooper can’t believe she didn’t use notes because she was so confusing and hard to follow. The lady talking to AC said that is pretty much how she sounds. 🙂

  539. Isabella says:

    Love how Palin cracked the last minute of that lame a s s speech!!! You can tell this is not what she wanted. Whoever or whatever got to her…CONGRATULATIONS!!!

  540. The Power of the Blogger! May the force continue to be with you. Alaska bloggers rock! 🙂

  541. Erin says:

    Congratulations, AKM, you deserve all the time off and barbecued ribs you can eat! Love ya!

  542. bluebanshee says:

    Where was Trig? I kept wondering where Trig was throughout the 18 minutes of Palin’s rambling disjointed speech. During the campaign he seemed to be her favorite accessory but now even Piper seems to have abandoned her little brother. A couple of times the camera pulled away for a wide angle — but no Trig. There were some off-camera babbling-baby sounds at the beginning of the MSNBC clip in the background but it was not clear whether they were from Trig or Bristol’s little one.

    Also, too, Sarah Palin seemed uncharacteristically nervous and perhaps a little teary-eyed, looking away from the camera at times. Not usual for the pageant-walking former sportscaster.

  543. bucfan says:

    I really (honk) thought here speech (honk) was about the goofiest (honk) thing I had seen (honk) in quite a while (honk). Darn geese, must have flown down here from Lake Lucille (honk).

  544. BarbinDC says:

    Here’s a toast to AKA Mudflats (I figured out that you were a sista just from your writing–before you were outted)! This was the place for everyone else in the world to find out everything Palin. It will still be the place to find out everything about Alaska. Such a good job.

    BTW: Was I the only one to spew when she complained about “the politics of personal destruction?” Where’s Walt Moneghan (sp?)? I’ll bet he has a few things to say about that!

  545. austintx says:

    Were those geese or DUCKS making that racket in the background ??

  546. MyChildrenAreOffLimits says:

    My sign tomorrow will read: “Welcome, Sean! Juneau has a nice house waiting for you!”

  547. BuffaloGal says:

    Earlier this evening (EST) I had decided that I just couldn’t take one more ounce of Palin news and talked myself in to taking the rest of the night off.

    1/2 an hour ago my son showed up at the door asking why I wasn’t bouncing off the walls. “Didn’t you hear? Twitter’s burning up with the rumor that Palin is resigning”

    After hugging and high-fiving the somewhat startled boy (the whooping and yelling took him quite by surprise) I flew out the door, bought a bottle of wine and am back the desk.

    If I could, I would be hugging and high fiving all of you and I imagine a scene similar to the iconic (yes , I said it) scene in Times Square at the end of World War II. I know it doesn’t come close in importance but right now – I don’t mind being over the top with exaggeration.

    I look forward to spending the next few days with you as we figure out the details.!

  548. DonnaInMichigan says:

    I will betcha that she just received her big fat check from the Publishing house yesterday.

    Cashed it…and figured why do I need this job anymore? I am now a multi millionaire!

  549. Shutterbuggery says:

    Dead fish.

  550. chascates says:

    I betcha she’s going to look for the ‘real killers!’

  551. The Rubber Room Hotel says:

    I have to admit even while watching her speech again I keep waiting for lightning to hit her.
    I love how she talks the sports and the national level and all the bad stuff from the national level….
    WTF?

  552. HistoryGoddess says:

    On my 2nd beer and I don’t even drink! What is she talking about- criticism over holding a fish? I don’t remember that one, and I thought I knew all her bonehead actions.

    Oh, and good for her for spinning how she is NOT a quitter. Jeeze. she forgot to study up on lame duck. She’s not “wired” to finish a job she was hired to do? How is that noble?

    Plus, what a liar. If this was in the works for awhile, why did she waste the money going to Kosovo?

    And, she keeps licking her lips. Is she medicated?

  553. drdubski says:

    Awesome news!! Best wishes from Florida!!
    I’m soooo excited to go to work on Monday and hear the others (I work with a lot of fringe types) take on this. Soooo bizarre!!

    HAPPY NEW INDEPENDENCE DAY!!

  554. Suchanut says:

    OK – here’s something to think about. Palin resigns so Sean takes over – I thought she had changed the succession order recently, putting her high school buddy the Head of Prisons in the next spot? So why is General Campbell going to be Lt. Gov? From what I hear, Gen Campbell is cut from the same narcissistic and delusional cloth. Is Gen Campbell the choice of the Rethugs to run for AK Governor in 2010?

    http://dmva.alaska.gov/biographies/campbell.htm

    Was Randy Ruedrick ( head of AK GOP) involved in all of this? He was just on MSNBC.

    Questions, there are lots of questions.

  555. Bonnie says:

    Please don’t turn her onto the lower 48. We have enough to wade through. 😉

  556. Just got back from the beach. Hubby and I had a nice day, Sarah Palin free. The only fog we saw was because there was an on-shore flow and the high pressure wasn’t enough to blow that pesky fog out to sea.

    I wonder if we will really have a more peaceful time once she’s done, or if she’s going to just keep turning up everywhere else.

    Congrats, Alaska!

  557. Professor Geezer says:

    Someone pinch me!

  558. O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!’

    It will be interesting to watch the true story unfold – this is not a woman who wants to spend more time with Trig at a Mommy and Me group!

  559. Homer J Simpson says:

    Im getting out my Alaska Flag and celebrating our independence!…..Go Sarah, Go…….and please dont come back!

  560. Iggles says:

    When I took my first Photoshop class in 1992, I joked that PhotoShop could literally change the world. I was right!

    I’m gonna keep working on my Rush Limbaugh photoshopin’ and see if I can get him to slink off into the sunset, too.

  561. Wordsmith says:

    THAT was the weirdest damn ‘press conference.’ Just watched it. Good lawd….

  562. indanth says:

    Happy Independence Day!

  563. ben in sf says:

    Read a bunch of other sites while the Mudflats was down, but your assessment is the best-informed, and you’re staying on your toes (envisioning AKM on tiptoe eating BBQ). Thanks for always reading between the lions!

  564. The Rubber Room Hotel says:

    Clink back AKM!
    enjoy your BBQ.
    And the special gift we have all received this special Independence Day..

  565. zyggy says:

    no need to apologize about the servers, of course they’re going to break when you have 50,000 hits in a minute. =)

    Bible Spice sure did ramble during her speech, sounded a bit crazy to me. And not one wink. lol, she doesn’t have the strength to be in the big boy club, she had to bow out.

    Thanks to all of you bloggers for helping to push her over the edge.

  566. Phil says:

    Not only did she prove to us the she is a bumbling fool idiot. Now she has proven she is a quitter too. I think I have figured out who her political advisor is…one of those strange little voices in her head only she can hear. Thank you strange little voice.

  567. Sandy Beach says:

    Clink back at ya! Christmas in July!

  568. Lori inLos Angeles says:

    Wonder why Van Flea did not go on Eddie Burke’s show? Perhaps Van Flea had to break the news to SP that it was finally over. I await the iceberg, for it is the ONLY reason she would quit, no doubt in my mind.

  569. DarleenMB says:

    Happy 4th Alaskans!!!

  570. Aussie Blue Sky says:

    It’s OK, AKM – it’s the Fourth of July here. Cheers!! 😀

  571. SMR says:

    Congrats Alaska! Evil liberal bloggers rock!

  572. HistoryGoddess says:

    Congrats to all! Her speech was very weird!
