Putting the goober in gubernatorial -

Screen Door Sunday is Coming…

This is it.  The final week of the Palin administration.  And while many Alaskans are still fans of the governor, gone are the days of 80% and 90% approval ratings.  The gubernatorial vetting process ended up being done by the national media after she’d already been tapped as John McCain’s running mate, and the nation (as well as the state of Alaska) learned a lot.

So now, this polarizing and divisive figurehead, known to us all as the soon-to-be-ex-two-thirds-of-one-term governor Sarah Palin has had enough.  She’s packed her bags and is headed for greener pastures.  So what’s a state to do?

Celebrate!

I’ve been hearing a lot about “screen door” parties.  In other words, “don’t let the screen door hit you on the way out!”  Are you having a Screen Door Saturday Party?  Or a Screen Door Sunday barbeque?  Even if you’re just lifting a glass, let me know.  I’ll be posting pictures and short descriptions of your celebration.

For any Mudflatters in Cordova, or looking for a great excuse to go, don’t miss a great party at The Reluctant Fisherman Inn!  According to their Facebook page, the festivities will begin at 7pm on Sunday night.

Our Guv’s last day: This is an historic event in the colorful history of Alaskan politics: We got dumped! Our Governor broke up with us. We cannot let the day go by without, well, hell, any excuse for a party!

Costumes, lipstick (and baggage) encouraged. Prizes! for Best in Show-off, Best Pageant Walk, Best Quitter Excuse, and others as we make them up!

The play list sounds awesome.  Here are some of my favorite selections.   Any other suggestions?

> Would I Lie to You? Eurythmics
> Money (That’s What I Want) Barrett Strong
> Ticket To Ride The Beatles
> You Better Go Now Billie Holiday
> Break On Through (To The Other Side) The Doors
> Leaving Here Eddie Holland
> Go Your Own Way Fleetwood Mac
> Here’s To The Losers Frank Sinatra
> Gone Fishin’ Louis Armstrong
> What’s Going On Marvin Gaye
> 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover Paul Simon
> Slip Slidin’ Away Paul Simon
> It’s All Over Now The Rolling Stones
> Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye Steam
> All Over Phoebe Snow
> 19th Nervous Breakdown Rolling Stones
> You’ve Lost That Lov’n Feeling Righteous Brothers
> So Long, Farewell The Sound of Music

Has Palin EVER asked OR said “Please”?

  20. samper says:

Beautiful LOSER, again by Bob Seger (is it bad to bring Bob into this?)

    Beautiful LOSER,
    Where ya gonna fall
    When you realize
You just don’t NEED IT ALL?

    Beautiful LOSER,
    Read it on the wall
    And realize
You just don’t NEED IT ALL.

    You can try and try,
But you CAN’T HAVE IT ALL!!!!!

(DISCLAIMER: Bob’s Beautiful Loser “won’t complain if he’s down on his knees. He’ll always ask, always say ‘please'”. Bob’s Beautiful Loser is far more honorable!)

  21. samper says:

    Up with the sun,
    Gone with the wind.
She always said I was lazy.

    Leaving my home,
    Leaving my friends.
Runnin’ when things make me crazy.

    Women have come,
    Women have gone.
    Everyone’s trying to cage me.

Those are the memories that make me a wealthy soul.

    — Travelin’ Man, by Detroit’s Own Rockin’ Robert Seger (we just love him here!)

There’s a guy works down the chip shop swears he’s Elvis

  25. CRFlats says:

I will think differently about the lyrics of this oldie summer bubble gum song (interestingly enough, penned by Paul Simon for the Seekers):

    Red Rubber Ball

I should have known you’d bid me farewell.
There’s a lesson to be learned from this
and I’ve learned it very well.

    Now I know you’re not
the only starfish in the sea.
If I never hear your name again
it’s all the same to me.

And I think it’s gonna be all right.
Yeah, the worst is over now,
The morning sun is shining like a Red Rubber Ball.

You never cared for secrets I’d confide.
For you I’m just an ornament,
    Something for your pride.

    Always running, never caring,
    That’s the life you live.
    Stolen minutes of your time
were all you had to give.

And I think it’s gonna be all right.
Yeah, the worst is over now,
The morning sun is shining like a Red Rubber Ball.

The story’s in the past with nothing to recall.
I’ve got my life to live and I
    don’t need you at all

The roller coaster ride we took is
    nearly at an end.
I bought my ticket with my tears,
    that’s all I’m gonna spend.

And I think it’s gonna be all right.
Yeah, the worst is over now,
The morning sun is shining like a Red Rubber Ball.

  38. the problem child says:

    Ozzy Osbourne, “Crazy Train”

    I’ve listened to preachers
    I’ve listened to fools
    I’ve watched all the dropouts
    Who make their own rules
One person conditioned to rule and control
The media sells it and you have the role

    Mental wounds still screaming
    Driving me insane
I’m going off the rails on a crazy train

  39. Lee323 says:

Definitely….”Thank God and Greyhound, You’re Gone.” by Roy Clark

The visual of an ole greyhound pulling up to the gubbner’s mansion in Juneau, loadin’ up Sarah and her brood, and roarin’ off in a cloud of stinky fumes back to Wasilla…..priceless. Take it away, Roy!

  40. who me? says:

You Alaskans know how to do it right! This is hilarious. Enjoy your celebrations on Sunday. You deserve it.

  41. overthemoon says:

I just went through the whole list…incresible play list for your parties!!! Keep the video cams rolling, there’s a great story here.

For those going to the Gov’s Picnic (kinda like the Teddy Bear’s Picnic? Well they had (sad) sack races…and they fell on their faces) Will there be vocal celebrants to let that woman know she’s burned all her bridges to and from nowhere??

  42. Joe 12-pack says:

gotta add “She’s Crafty” by the Beastie Boys to the playlist:

…I said, “I don’t know her just met her tonight.”
And Adrock started hiding everything in sight
    D. pulled me over said, “Hide your gold,
The girl is crafty like ice is cold!”
The girl is crafty – she knows all the moves
I started playing records – she knew all the grooves
He thought she was a thief – and D. was right
But I just figured she’d spend the night
When I woke up late in the afternoon
She had taken all the things from inside his room
I found myself naked in the middle of the floor
She had taken the bed and the chest of drawers
The mirror, the TV, the new guitar cords
My remote control and my old skateboard
She robbed us blind – she took all we owned
And the boys blamed me for bringing her home

  46. Husky82 says:

    “Rockin’ Robin”

He rocks in the tree tops all day long
Hoppin’ and a-boppin’ and singing his song
All the little birdies on Jaybird Street
Love to hear the robin go tweet tweet tweet

    Rockin’ robin, tweet tweet tweet
    Rockin’ robin’ tweet tweetly-tweet
    Blow rockin’ robin
‘Cause we’re really gonna rock tonight

Also too, “Witchy Woman” by the Eagles

    Raven hair and ruby lips
Sparks fly from her finger tips
    Echoed voices in the night
Shes a restless spirit on an endless flight
Wooo hooo witchy woman, see how
    High she flies…

  47. overthemoon says:

  50. Judy5cents says:

Just remembered another great country song for Sarah. Kenny Rogers’ “You PIcked A Fine Time To Leave Me, Lucille.”

You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille
With four hungry children and a crop in the field
    I’ve had some bad times
I’ve lived through some sad times
But this time your hurtin’ won’t heal
You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille.

And she did tender her resignation on the banks of Lake Lucille, so it fits perfectly.

On another note – I have LOVED this song since I first heard it many moons ago. When I comes on the radio in the car, I sing at the top of my lungs and laugh myself silly. It just tickles me.
It strikes me as very à propos for the current situation with Palin v the GOP. LOL

Yes, it’s a misogynistic rock and roll song, but someone else besides me had to be thinking it, right?

No violence involved, rather read it as, burying her political career rather than her actual corpus.

It’s the “I can still hear her complain” line that made me think of the song in the first place.

    Celebrity by Brad Paisley:

    Someday, I’m gonna be famous,
Do I have talent? Well, no.
These days you don’t really need it,
    Thanks to reality shows.

Can’t wait to date a congressman,
Can’t wait to sue my Dude.
Can’t wait to wreck a Ferrari,
    On my way to rehab.

‘Cause when you’re a celebrity, it’s adios reality.
    You can act just like a fool;
People think you’re cool just ’cause you’re on TV.
I can throw a major fit,
When my latte isn’t just how I like it.
When they say I’ve gone insane,
I’ll blame it on the pain,
And the pressures that go with bein’ a celebrity.
    Ah ha.

I’ll get to cry in Twitter,
When things don’t go my way.
    An’ I’ll get community service,
No matter which law I break.

    I’ll make the supermarket tabloids,
    They’ll write some awful stuff.
But the more they run my name down,
The more my price goes up.

Cuz, when you’re a celebrity, it’s adios reality.
    no matter what ya do;
People think you’re cool just ’cause you’re on TV.
Now, I can fall in and out of love,
Have careers that barely last months.
When they go down the drain,
I’ll blame it on the fame,
And say: “It’s just so tough, bein’ a celebrity.”

So let’s hitch up the wagons and head out east,
To the land of fun in the sun.
We’ll be real world hillbillies, jackass millionaires.
Hey, hey Hollywood, here we come.

Yeah, when you’re a celebrity, it’s adios reality.
    No matter what you do,
People think you’re cool just ’cause you’re on TV.
    Bein’ a celebrity.
    Yeah, a celebrity.
    Ah ha.

    >My Way – Frank Sinatra
    >These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ – Nancy Sinatra
    >It’s My Party and I’ll Cry (Whine) if I Want to – Leslie Gore

But the first I thought of is an old folk song:

    >So Long, It’s Been Good to Know You – Woody Guthrie (someone more creative than I could change those verses to fit her excuses)

And the rest of us could all join in a chorus of:

    >The Hallelujah Chorus (get your music out and start practicing)

Oh, and here’s one you can all sing the next time SP gives a speech. (It’s the one the kids sing in the morning at day camp when the site directors are ready to give the day’s announcements.)

    >Announcements, announcements, announcements
A terrible death to die, a terrible death to die
A terrible death to be talked to death
    A terrible death to die
    Announcements, announcements, announcements!

(Sorry, but day camp starts today and even though I’m no longer a site director, this time of year my brain automatically starts singing weird songs and thinking of goofy things to do.)

When something in my history is found
Which contradicts the views that I propound
Or shows that I perhaps am not the guy I claim to be
    Here’s what I usually do

    Chorus:
    I lie
    I simply boldly falsify
I look the other feller in the eye
    And just deny, deny, deny
    I lie

I don t apologize. Not me. Instead
I say I never said the things I said
Nor did the things some people saw me do
When confronted by some things they know are true

    Chorus

I hate those weasel words some slickies use
To blur their past or muddy up their views
Not me. I’m blunt. One thing that makes me great
Is that I’ll never dodge nor obfuscate
