Netroots Nation Photo Album, Day 1

When I moved to Alaska at 24 years old, I’d never been here, knew not a soul, had no job, and $300 in my pocket. But I was off on a grand adventure to a foreign land. When I touched down in Anchorage in the middle of February after a mind-blowing flight 3 and a half hours north from Seattle, this guy was the first to greet me. I never knew what became of him after the big airport renovation all those years ago, but I found him by the Frontier Airlines check-in. He hasn’t changed. At 14 hours…

Moose Gate!

Meanwhile in Canada, that’s a fine moose he got himself into! A random act of kindness by three Canadian men frees a terrified baby moose from a potentially fatal situation. We love when a moose story has a happy ending.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Here’s wishing you the most joyful of Valentine’s Days, Mudpups. For those without a game plan, a few suggestions: Let’s honor all couples and all families. It’s unbelievable that Ted Cruz and Mike Lee (looking quite altar-bound themselves here) would launch their marriage revocation initiative today. For today’s musical accompaniment, I recommend this unbelievable New Orleans jazz cover of a Guns’n’Roses classic. Miche Brand of Postmodern Jukebox wields her lush vocals so sweetly, she can even save Axl Rose from himself. Lastly, if you’re in a part of the country covered in snow, I suggest rounding up whatever supplies you need…

Moose Appears in Finnish Passport

How cool is this? The Mudflats’ Brian the Moose has a cameo appearance in Finland’s new passports. So, in the US we get security chips in our passports and they get cool animated moose? I think it’s time for me to find someone in Finland to marry for citizenship. Be right back. [hat tip to Business Insider]

Smitten Moose Falls for Same-Sex Statue

This may not be safe for work. Honestly, we just don’t know. In Anchorage this week, new moose mamas are emerging into the open with their tiny calves, barely two weeks old. It’s an adorable sight to see, and the whole neighborhood is awash in motherly love. But moose love of a different sort is on full display in Grand Lake, Colorado. It involves one moose who’s quite… how shall we say… “gregarious,” and the other who’s more of the strong, silent type. It’s a notable courtship for several reasons, and proves that true love will not be denied. 1)…

Open Thread – Brian in Puyallup!

Haven’t seen Brian the Moose around much lately. I thought it was the wind and driving rain that had kept him away, but thanks to Mudflatter Jim, I now know that Brian was actually at the Puyallup Fair, in Washington! It’s one of the ten biggest in the nation. For some reason, he took particular interest in the Photo Salon… As always, feel free to send in your shots of Brian, wherever he may be…

Utah Sheriff Saves Moose from Swing Set

Old time Mudflatters may remember that we had a little incident here at Mudflats Central a couple years ago that involved a mysterious clanging in the night, and a swing set found the next morning a couple hundred feet away in the driveway. The culprit was Brian the Moose, whose impressive antlers had gotten caught in the chains of the swings. Luckily for our Alaskan moose, he was able to free himself by his own efforts. A moose in Utah was not so lucky and got stuck. Here’s an amazing video of a kind and brave Utah Sheriff’s Sergeant who,…

Open Thread – Behind Curtain #1

It’s a gorgeous day here in the valley. The sun is sunning, and the clouds are clouding, and the sky is blue. And imagine my surprise when I parted the curtains and … Brian! He’s looking drop dead gorgeous – shiny and brown with a 50″ rack. He’s going to be a popular fellow this fall, that’s for sure. After he’d finished munching on the alders outside the window he headed down the driveway. It was so good to see him, I’ll even forgive him for peeing on my boat as he left. Seriously… it’s like he was raised in…

Open Thread – Tough Winter

Humans aren’t the only ones feeling overwhelmed by this year’s record dump of snow. I passed this guy on my way home today, up to his very tall armpits in a snow berm on the side of the road. He didn’t seem to mind me stopping to take a quick picture. All they want to do these days is eat, but anyone who gives them a hard time – beware. When you’re hungry, you’re also cranky. Those with wings have an easier time of it. The ravens, who prefer the less populated areas in the summertime, congregate at fast food…
