MUDFLIX – The GOP War on Water

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy In this clip, Rachel Maddow interviews Melissa Harris-Perry, professor of politics at Tulane University about the role of the federal government in assuring safety in the commons – clean air clean water, national security, etc. The Republicans in the House just voted to strip the EPA of its right to overrule states decisions about water quality. The Republican-controlled House passed a bill Wednesday that would sharply curtail the federal government’s role in protecting waters from pollution by barring the Environmental Protection Agency from overruling state decisions on water…

Wisconsin Total Recall: Democrats 6. Republicans 0.

Democrats made a clean sweep against the fake democrats fielded by the Republican Party of Wisconsin in order to force primaries and grant the republican incumbents an extra month to campaign…and grant them the  opportunity to receive plenty of money via independent expenditures from the likes of Americans for Prosperity and other corporate-backed special interests. Despite GOTV efforts by local republican parties, the GOP failed.  Is Governor Walker  paying attention while lounging on his taxpayer-funded patio quaffing cloyingly insipid Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy, a beer/lemonade mix from Wisconsin’s number one faux craft brewery. Gotta love a Wisconsin Governor who actively attempts…

Oyster Roundup – On Inbreeding, Moose Cheese, and GOP Muppets

~Thick and fast they came at last, and more, and more, and more!   Brilliant Public Relations from the Coal Industry So, a study comes out that was done in coal mining areas in West Virginia, where mountaintop removal threatens the health of residents, devastates ecosystems and leaves the “Mountain State” far less mountainous than it once was. The study says that women who live in coal mining areas have a greater risk of having children with birth defects. But industry lawyers say that it may not be the toxins associated with coal mining, it may be the INBREEDING. Wow….

Mudflix – Whose Books Would Chicagoans Ban? (You’ll Never Guess)

OK, just to be clear, we here at The Mudflats totally heart the first amendment. It’s actually one of our favorite ones. We would never want to sound like we wanted to limit speech, or squelch the marketplace of ideas, no matter how mind-numbing, head-banging, or downright painfully idiotic those “ideas” may be. That said – Your average Chicagoan on the street was asked which books they would like to see banned at the Printer’s Row Literature Festival in their city. Guess who won. Here are the results: Sarah Palin         36% Glenn Beck           23% Ann Coulter         22% Adolf Hitler             0.5%…

Oyster Roundup – Independence Day Edition

Happy Independence Day! Of course, “Alaskan Independence Day” was yesterday, the two year anniversary of the event at Lake Lucille in Wasilla that we like to cal “Quitstock.”  That’s right, Sarah Palin abdicated the governorship and left us in the not-so-capable hands of Captain Zero. We Alaskans were rid of her whether we individually wanted to be, or not. Moving on… You may notice that my usual John Tenniel illustration from Alice in Wonderland does not grace this Oyster Roundup. Instead may I present oysters from Kachemak Bay in Homer, Alaska that were presumably engulfed by our editor Shannyn Moore….

MUDFLIX: Gay Barbarians at the Gate – Marcus Bachmann as First Dude

In this clip, Keith Olbermann talks to Ken Vogel of Politico about the potential trainwreck, or elevation of the Bachmann campaign. With the less than inspiring, less than electable GOP lineup, Michele Bachmann is actually rising in the polls. What kind of “First Dude” would this oft-compared to Sarah Palin potential candidate bring to the White House? Marcus Bachmann, a Christian counselor hasn’t been bashful about his social conservative opinions. Last we checked, he referred to gays as “barbarians.”  Nothing like reaching out to 10% of the population. But, clearly, it’s not the 10% that they are concerned with….

Corrupt Bastards 2.0 Has Launch Date

Good news for Alaskans that have been jonesing for their Corrupt Bastard fix. It’s been a while. The trials of the self-named Corrupt Bastards Club were the best pieces of legislative and judicial theater around, and had Alaskans who normally didn’t pay attention to politics riveted, and infuriated. They may not have been keeping up with the ins and outs of Alaska oil and gas taxation and policy, but at the very least they expected their legislators not to blatantly sell their votes right to the oil companies. Silly Alaskans. Not only did we discover that our legislators sold out,…

Palin’s Remarks After Iowa Premiere (Transcript of Word Salad)

Time to get the giant Caesar-sized bowl and the double Costco bag of Crazy Croutons. Sarah Palin delivered a monstrous serving of word salad after the Iowa premiere of “The Undefeated.”  It appears that the potential presidential candidate was unconcerned with having prepared remarks of any kind, and simply let all those buzz words out of her head, in no particular order. The full transcript of the video is below. My favorite part is when she explains that we don’t need foreign countries because God gave us the oil and the gas and the coal and we can be totally…

How the Alaska House Gave Away State Sovereignty to the Federal Government

By Rep. Les Gara I’m not a big fan of failure, and not a big fan of spending money on wasted Special Sessions. I’ve now voted three times, including yesterday, to pass the Coastal Zone Management bill that passed the Bi-Partisan Senate Monday, but surprisingly failed by three votes in the House yesterday. Failure to pass the bill gave away a big piece of state sovereignty to the federal government. Click HERE for a link to my speech on the House Floor on why I believed the bill should have passed, or read the text at the end of this…

Stop the Sunset at the Anchorage Assembly Meeting Tonight

He’s at it again. Mayor Dan Sullivan has found a new way to stifle the voices of Anchorage residents, and keep them from making all those pesky suggestions and complaints – you know, “citizen participation.” Apathy and disconnection is far more appealing to the current administration. But, tomorrow, there is a public hearing in which you, dear Anchorage resident, may make your voice heard anyway. The mayor has decided to trim the fat, and cut, or sunset many of the city’s volunteer boards and commissions. The city admits that this has nothing to do with saving money. So why put…
