Nazis.

On my 21st birthday, I woke up in the morning and drove to Dairy Queen.  I got soft serve vanilla ice cream with strawberry topping and I ate it for breakfast.  Why?  When I was a child I asked once if I could have ice cream for breakfast, and my mother said, “You can have ice cream for breakfast when you’re 21.”  And so I did. My father spent his 21st birthday in a prisoner of war camp.  Deaf in one ear, and completely flat-footed, he could have easily been a “4-F” and escaped service for medical reasons.  He was…

Alaska “Deathers” Heckle Sick People (Updated with Photos)

I am taking a break. This was a strange and disturbing morning. I started the day with a big cup of coffee, and an 8:30am arrival at The Egan Center in downtown Anchorage.  That’s where the special session of the Alaska State Legislature is meeting today.  They have two things on their plate – voting on whether to overturn ex-governor Sarah Palin’s rejection of the stimulus money for energy efficiency, and whether to confirm Craig Campbell as Lt. Governor. The joint session convenes at 1:00, so I had time to pop over and attend a press conference Organizing for America held…

The Palin Rally Mentality – Thoughts from Fairbanks

Today I continue today to bring you reports from Mudflatters across the state – those who were at the Abdication Ceremony, and those that celebrated Palin’s stepping down in other ways. I look forward to writing about other things, but today we continue to purge our systems. Here are some thoughts on the Palin “rally mentality” from Mudflatter K in Fairbanks.   ********************************* I’ve been at Fairbanks political events before, and patriotic galas at this same park on the 4th of July, etc., and I’ve even encountered Ms. Palin at the Tanana Valley Fair back when she was running for…

Palin’s Farewell Address – Full Transcript

Sunday July 26, at 3pm Alaska time, Governor Sarah Palin stepped down from her position as governor.  This is the transcript of her farewell address. Yup, I took one for the team. It took three hours, but I made it. I’d been meaning to transcribe her rambling crazy “I’m not quitting, I’m just leading in another direction” lakeside babble-fest, but I never seemed to get around to it. And as crazy and rambling as that one was, I think this one is even better. Boots on the ground from Fairbanks coming soon! *************************** What an absolutely beautiful day it is,…

Sarah Palin – On to a “Higher Calling”

It’s Quittin’ Time here in Alaska.  Yes, according to our almost former executive-in-chief, we’re yesterdays news.  Tossed like an old banana peel on the compost pile of past political ambition.  Cast off like an old peep-toe pump with a broken heel.  Jilted.  So, why are we so happy? It’s kind of like being dumped by someone who was really bad for you anyway.  Sure there are some hurt feelings.  Didn’t we measure up?  Weren’t we worth fighting for?  “It’s not you, it’s me?”  What does the Lower 48 have that we don’t?  Is it the money?  But, you said you…

So Long, Sarah! Anchorage Bids Farewell to the Governor.

Well, today was the second-to-last stop on the Quitter Tour.  It was Abdication Eve here in Alaska.  Today at 2pm Alaska time, the governor will officially hand over the state, and all it’s unresolved problems to Lt. Governor Sean Parnell.  He’s known to us here as Caribou Ken, The Empty Suit, Sean Who? and Captain Zero.  What is he going to be like?  We’ll find out. I arrived at the Governor’s Picnic in what I thought would be plenty of time.  Boy was I wrong.  All available parking spaces were taken for what felt like miles around.  I found a lucky empty spot about…

Ordinance 64 – Live Blogging, Round V

Yes, boys and girls… it’s time for Red Shirt Theatre, Act V. The Non-Discrimination Ordinance public testimony continues. The link for live streaming the Anchorage Assembly Meeting is HERE. Use this thread to live blog the meeting if you feel so inclined. Public testimony will be given regarding Ordinance 64, which extends Anchorage’s non-discrimination policy to include the words “sexual orientation.” The red shirt brigade are an organized crowd from several local area evangelical churches. This will be the second round of public testimony in front of new Mayor Dan Sullivan. Recent polling suggests that the ordinance has very good…

GOP Candidates Tell Palin ‘Talk to the Hand!’

Now that she’s dumped the governorship, Sarah Palin is ready to hit the road and get to work.  She’s told us that she is willing and able to get down to the business of helping candidates whose vision she shares.  She wants to use her star power to get them elected.  Only one teeny problem. It seems as though GOP candidates who will run in tight races in 2010 would rather not have the “help” of an unemployed ex-governor who completed 65% of one term and then quit because…. uh….because….well….um.    Go figure.  This tells us what we already know; that…

Shannyn Moore in Palin’s Crosshairs.

[A similar piece is up on The Huffington Post.  This one is just for Mudflatters] Just when you thought you’d seen the back end of him, he returns;  one of our favorite characters here at the Mudflats.  I refer, of course, to Sarah Palin’s personal attorney, and the man in Alaska with the most dastardly sounding bad guy name ever:  Thomas Van Flein.  I put his last name in bold italics to remind you to pronounce it with a dastardly accent.  I still don’t actually know what he looks like, but for our purposes in the past, we have imagined…

Palin is a Sitting Duck

I have to confess, I was worried there for a little while.  When Rod Blagojevich hurtled on to the scene with his hair and his boundless delusional self-love, I started feeling like maybe my state wasn’t #1 anymore.  And then there was Mark Sanford, who was all “holier than thou,” suddenly stealing all the headlines with his disappearing act, non-existent Appalachian Trail hike/Argentine tryst and his “rosy pink light” Harlequin Romance love letters. But today, I feel vindicated.  Alaska still proudly sits in the top spot. Our governor has won the prestigious “Sitting Duck Award,” given out annually by the…
