Oyster Roundup! Guns, Money and Cheese…

~Thick and fast they came at last, and more, and more, and more! Pass the Bree Hey, remember when Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan “favorited” a porn star on Twitter last year? It was quite an entertaining tale, and you can refresh your memory HERE. Little did we know that the story would have a Chapter 2, and become more entertaining still. You see, it turns out that Mayor Sullivan’s favoritest porn star has now shed her porn name, and become (are you sitting down?) one of Charlie Sheen’s two “goddesses.” That’s right boys and girls… Sully’s Bree Olson is now…

Open Thread – Things as They Ought to Be.

The first time I ever saw a billiken, I’ll admit to being a little creeped out. I stared at the impish pointy-headed topless pseudo Buddha-like critter, and I wasn’t quite sure if it was friend or foe. So, when I saw this collection of them in the Juneau State Museum, I was a little startled at first, but decided to read up on the billiken. I was pleasantly surprised. Suddenly the vaguely disturbing outer appearance melted away, and I became aware of the wonderful symbology beneath. The billiken, I found out, is the best god ever. Forget Neptune, or…

Kindred Quakes: Alaska and Japan

By Shannyn Moore Living in a seismic zone is tricky. The seconds that roll by during an earthquake are the longest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve been in an MRI machine, a fishing boat, and on the radio airwaves during quakes. No matter where, I ask myself: “Is this the ‘Big One’?” “Should I be standing in a door jam now?” “Thank God for building codes.” We share a nervous nature with the occasional quakes. Tonight all those questions Alaskans have asked since 1964 have been answered in Japan. It was a Big One. It was devastating. Our hearts and thoughts are…

Wisconsin Capitol Stormed – Occupied by Protesters (Updates)

“In 30 minutes, 18 state senators undid 50 years of civil rights in Wisconsin,” Democratic Sen. Mark Miller said in a statement. “Their disrespect for the people of Wisconsin and their rights is an outrage that will never be forgotten.” MADISON, WI. Thousands of angry citizens stormed the Wisconsin State Capitol this evening when the Republican Senate, after removing fiscal items from the original bill, passed legislation that will strip public unions of most of their collective bargaining rights and require employees to pay 8% more toward their health insurance and and a greater share of their pensions.    Earlier today…

Boots on the Ground – Young at Heart in Madison

AGING MUDPUPS ON THE GROUND IN MADISON So, the husband and I finally decided to motor on up to Madison and join the fun. And, fun it was! We live in northern Illinois, a half-hour south of the border and frequently journey across the Cheddar Curtain. We also have two grandbabies there, so we felt a need to participate in the brouhaha in Madison. We have both been so agitated by the outrageous acts against workers rights that Scott Walker and his fat cat buddies have attempted to force upon Wisconsinites, that it was high time we made the…

Voices from the Flats – Iditarod 2011

By Jim Wright The following story of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race first appeared on Stonekettle Station in 2009. With this week’s kickoff of the Last Great Race, and my well known passion for it, a number of folks have asked about the origins of the event. Here’s the story: AN EPIDEMIC OF DIPHTHERIA IS ALMOST INEVITABLE HERE STOP I AM IN URGENT NEED OF ONE MILLION UNITS OF DIPTHERIA ANTITOXIN STOP MAIL IS ONLY FORM OF TRANSPORTATION STOP … Those lines were part of a message sent by Curtis Welch, MD, on January 22nd, 1925 via radio telegram from…

Alaska Governor Sean Parnell’s Big Oil Bailout

~Senator Bill Wielechowski explains ACES *ATTENTION BLOGGERS – If you have a blog, and would like to repost this article in its entirety including links, photos, and attribution, please feel free to do so. This is important information, and it’s never easy going against the well-funded falsehoods continually pushed forward by the oil companies. Often, the truth is free and the lies cost a lot of money. So, help yourself and pass it on. You can also post the link in your Facebook page, or post the link in a Tweet. Thanks!   By Thomas Dewar and Jeanne Devon “Each…

Open Thread – Brian Goes to Madison!

That’s right. It’s the Mudflats mascot Brian the Moose coming to you from the capital of Wisconsin! Believe me, it was just as much a surprise to me as it is to you when I got an email from Mudflatter Attagirl with a picture of Brian in Madison! Attagirl and her husband traveled to the uprising in their neighbor state, and did a great write up of what they found. Check in later today (Wednesday afternoon) to read all about it and enjoy some awesome pictures from the center of labor movement.

We are Wisconsin, and We are Winning!

How do you know it might be time to take a break from the revolution? You come home from work late, wife and child are sleeping, you pour yourself a glass of 2nd tier scotch and make a Parmesan/Sriracha omelette with a couple of Hebrew National hotdogs on the side. Yeah, need to go grocery shopping and remember that I’ve got a little one to spend some time with. So…It’s been a long week, culminating in one of the most incredible events I’ve ever been a part of. I’ve gone from passive participant, to helping organize one of the best…
