Aurora Hits Lower 48 Tonight!*

It’s rare that the lower 48 gets a good look at the aurora – but depending where you are in the northern USA and southern Canada tonight you just might get a chance. According to some experts it’s going to be a good week for viewing the northern lights… assuming cloud cover stays away and you can find somewhere away from light pollution. For all of those first time aurora shooters out there, I recommend that you read TheMudflats contributor Carl Johnson‘s article over at his blog, with some great pointers  on how to get the best image. Photos: A Day At the Fair [The New York State Fair]

I’d rather be covering the Alaska State Fair which is this week, but I’m stuck in Upstate New York. So, here are some photos from the New York State Fair. It was Governor’s Day at the fair, and unlike in Alaska where that might mean free hamburgers and salmon, in New York it means protests and Dinosaur BBQ.

#BringBackOurGirls Rally at NY City Hall – Photos

Yesterday in New York City Councilmembers called for action on the kidnapped Nigerian girls. As of publication, nearly 300 Nigerian girls are still missing taken by the terrorist group Boko Haram. The US military is getting involved using surveillance planes and satellites to search for the group. I recommend checking out the excellent coverage at Al Jazeera for more info.

UPDATE! Still NOT Made in Alaska – Phuket, We’re buying from Thailand

Looks like Dan is reading TheMudflats. I checked his site today and all the photos mentioned changed over to new ones. You can see for yourself at the screenshot below, taken Wednesday 4/2/2014 at about 9:50am AK Time.   —————————————— We published a story titled “NOT Made in Alaska – DC Dan Buys from New Zealand”  about 5 days ago. In the article (which is worth a read) we show that Dan Sullivan bought a photo for his site that was supposed to portray Alaska, but the photo was actually of New Zealand. Not ground breaking investigative research, but if you’re…

Open Thread: Found Aurora

Just searching through my Alaska archives and came across a folder of some wonderful aurora photos from late last year. You can see the rest over at my new photo site (and get prints, if you like) at www.zdroberts.com.

Fracking Victim Steve Lipsky’s Flaming Water is No Joke – by Julie Dermansky for Desmosblog

Fracking Victim Steve Lipsky’s Flaming Water is No Joke (via Desmogblog) Weatherford, Texas, homeowner Steve Lipsky has nothing to hide. He is not trying to take down Range Resources, a large oil and gas company with a reputation for bullying its critics, nor is he trying to defame the company as it has accused him of…

Smoke Up! – Smoked Salmon Photos

Salmon is the lifeblood of Alaska. We grill it. We jerk it. (Jerky it? Jerkify it?)  We pan fry it. We put it in our vodka. This last week TheMudflats contributing editor Shannyn Moore spent a couple days working through some of the largest filets I’ve ever seen – smoking and canning them. I did what I know how to do with salmon… take photos of them. (and sneak some for my bagels) By the way… if you like Salmon… you should tell your legislators. Click this link.

Rock for the Salmon! – Music at Salmonstock

Salmonstock was several weeks ago – I know – but we just got so many awesome photos we’re finally ready to start posting them all. Please keep checking back for more photo-essays from our fun visit to Salmonstock… and start prepping for next year. Photos above by Zach Roberts A couple extras below by Jeanne Devon

Aurora Hunt Successful

Saturday night while most people are hitting the bars and partying – Mudflats contributor Carl Johnson, Frank Stelges and I journeyed to an undisclosed location to hunt the elusive aurora. (I have been sworn to secrecy) While our prey took a long time to show – when it did – it was a glorious one. The moon was out in full force, and barely a cloud in the sky, the stars were shining bright and thankfully the temperature stayed relatively nice… so here my mud-puppies are the spoils of a victorious hunt. The mighty aurora.
